      I drive a very expensive and very powerful Audi. I pride myself on being a competant driver who is very considerate to other drivers.
      I guess you do not drive a very expensive and powerful car, but just choose to project your own failings onto others.
      Of course I am just an Audi driver so my opinion does not matter.

    Also don't focus on your speedo. Look for gaps as soon as you can (if crossing the motorway via a bridge before joining the sliproad, you can take a glance over the railings to judge traffic levels).
    I was nervous about that HGV for a while. I would have slowed down somewhat and joined behind him. A few seconds lost, but it saves you the stress and likely speeding to get ahead of them. Remember: HGVs will not stop quickly, so you should help them by leaving them a 2 second gap behind you (in dry conditions. Double it in wet). If you join right in front a HGV, and all of a sudden you need to brake hard because you were focusing on your speedo instead of what's on the road, you have not given that HGV the space he needs, putting yourself in danger. Give yourself options, join in behind the HGV, assess the situation, and then go for the overtake.

    I would add, make the decision to join ahead or behind an approaching vehicle (especially slower ones) in lane 1 and then stick to that decision. If in the video above the lorry was just a little further ahead it might have been necessary to adjust the speed to join a safe distance behind it rather than end up racing up to the end of the slip road and pulling out in front of it or forcing it to move out to lane 2. If you time it right and traffic is clear you will be able to overtake the lorry safely with little to no delay.

    Speed adjustment to pace and join this is correct but also remember the slip road is a minor road with the broken line at the end being a junction to the carriage way or main road. The high code states a main road has priority over a minor road, so if you can not join you stop until you can or as someone has mentioned utilise the hard shoulder until you can.

  • @davidwright7050
    @davidwright7050 ปีที่แล้ว

    All slip roads joining a motorway have a mandatory 50mph speed limit to join traffic and you don't have priority over vehicles in lane 1 but they must be aware there is a merge and change lane if it's safe to do so.

    It's so much easier to find a gap the quicker you reach motorway speeds. It can feel quite daunting joining a motorway for the first time, but so long as you match the speed of the traffic in good time, i can guarantee you will be able to find a gap without any of the main traffic having to move for you.

    Bad advice! There is no need to join at that speed and so close to the slip road end. Joining at the end leaves you with no alternatives. I would have joined behind the lorry. Speed matched but much safer. You should have added that the dashed line of the slip road means "give way" and you should be prepared to come to a complete halt on the slip road if it not safe to join. Difficult to do at that excessive speed. YOU have to give way to traffic already on the motorway!

Unfortunately in the UK & Ireland there is a perception that because you are on a slip road, you have a god given right to force your way onto a motorway, this is not the case. It is common practice in continental Europe that a Give Way sign is placed on all entry points to restricted highways, this has been spectacularly overlooked by roads authorities in the UK & Ireland.

    👍...and stay in lane 1 UNLESS you are overtaking

      To many lazy drivers think they have the right to stay in lane2 after overtaking a vehicle.

  • @christophehibbitt2766
    @christophehibbitt2766 ปีที่แล้ว

    Important to add you don’t have right of way when you join I.e the car on the motorway doesn’t have to move over to lane 2 to let you join or slow down etc

    • @SP1x5
      @SP1x5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a new driver this is what confuses me. If the driver in lane 1 doesn’t have to slow down for you to enter then how am i supposed to match the speed of the drivers in lane 1 on the slip road? Somebody has to slow down presuming there’s no suitable gap or else there will be a crash

    • @christophehibbitt2766
      @christophehibbitt2766 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SP1x5 I believe right of way sit with the driver on the motorway rather than the one entering. I think when he saying match I think he’s meaning don’t creep slowly, try to increase speed and as he said look for the gap.

    And don’t join in a multiple vehicle convoy, because one found a gap correctly doesn’t mean an untold amount of vehicles behind the first one can join causing people to touch the breaks

    So many people don't get up to speed on slip roads it's frustrating when your behind those people

    I like his videos, very entry level educational. I just wonder, how come like 85% of British drivers fail at the very basic? 🤷‍♂️ I mean, this is a lesson for someone that is about to get their license. Yet, most people joining the motorway do so going 40mph and do not merge till they run out of slip road. 🙄 Its like being a chef for 20 years and you still hold the knife like it is your first time. 🤦‍♂️🤣🤣

    I was told to use the offside lane if available to get an early look into the motorway, would you advise against this Reg?
    Thanks for all your videos mate.
    Would you consider making a short for exiting a motorway as well?
    Thanks again. 👍🏼

    People crawling along slip road at 40mph then slamming on brakes using it as a give way. My worst nightmare and happens frequently.

    Tell all these new entitled drivers not to assume cars will allow them in. They signal and sail straight onto the road without looking. This is a modern trend, which is bloody dangerous.

    As a truck driver, people not speeding up on the slip road infuriates me no end. I can't always move over to lane 2. I've had someone on the hard shoulder before now as I had another truck overtaking me and a twat up my arse trying to improve their fuel economy to the detriment of their safety. I had nowhere to go and they were scared to use their throttle and then all of a sudden I'm the arsehole.
    And breathe.....

  • @jazzflute2465

    The most dangerous part of a motorway, vehicles joining the motorway do not have right if way so don't expect other cars to move over for you to let you in lane 1. You always give way to the right.

  • @gpz550a2
    @gpz550a2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    No, no, no. You make sure you're alongside another vehicle. They move into lane 2 as a courtesy and then you move into lane 1 and drive just ever so slightly faster than the car in lane 2 that just let you in. They really love it and will thank you profusely...

  • @millertime1227

    Or as most people do nowadays,go straight into lane 2 and just sit there until u need to leave the motorway

    As a tanker driver usually at full weight capacity it drives me up the wall the entitled people who feel YOU have to move over to let a nimble CAR in when they are going the same speed next to you then swear and beep at you as if you’re in the wrong for not moving.

  • @supertouring22

    By not building sufficient speed on the slip road, drivers make it harder for themself to join the fast moving traffic which usually results in them slowing. They are a danger to everyone around them.

    Good one, its very frustrating and dangerous when people join too slowly. If I am on the main carriage way I do move across to lane 2 on the approach If safe to let others on....but don't count on it.

    Highway code 259. Match your speed to the on going speed of the motorway. Correct.
    But guys, don't race to end of the slip road and expect a Speed limited (56mph) HGV vehicleto move over and slow the middle. lane traffic. This is not matching the speed on lane 1.
