Dudhkunda Lake, a hidden gem in Nepal's Solukhumbu region, offers a serene and spiritual experience at an altitude of 4,600 metres. The journey explores the diverse landscapes, rich culture, and hospitable locals, showcasing the beauty beyond the famous Everest region.
It was useful to see that there are now lodges in both Kamo Danda and Saharsbeni (it is not a "basecamp", why do you call it that?) making the trek easier to manage. In 2018 we hiked up from Ringmo, after coming from Dhap Bazar over Pikey Peak, in one day to Saharsbeni. I took about 7 hours total including field lunch at Kamo. It is easy to see in the drone footage that glaciers have receded almost 1.5 km west side of the lake. Maps made 30 years ago show the glacier extending well past the lake. You missed an adventurous way of getting out: the exciting "Yak Butter Trail" to Khumbu over the high ridges to Nakchung, located on the opposite side of the river from Lukla. We managed with one night in a cave in the middle of a 1200 m descent to Luja Khola. Better plan would be to visit Dudh Kunda lake in the morning and hike to Luzan Kharka in the afternoon and camp there, next day cross the first ridge to Luja Khola and camp there in a nice flat meadow, and good sized caves. Then reach maybe Ghat the next evening and continue to Namche and further up. I believe that maybe only half a dozen foreigners have ever walked this shortcut route to Khumbu. Nice drone footage, but too much "Me Me look at Me" mentality to my liking, and never needed or used a phone up there. 5 months spent in Khumbu so far since 1985 and never called anybody from there...
