"The Kier Chronicle" newspaper, that Milchick shows to innie Mark, has: Published since 1893 with VOL....No. 51,903. At one edition per day, that puts the current date as 2035.
Good catch! We did see Mark's drivers license in season 1 though, and it says "04/24/2020". But I guess that could be the date he got the license, not the expiration date.
@MoviesGoodInternetBad I understand where you're coming from. However, if this is an alternate reality can see how the expiration time is longer there. So, 2035 can still hold. There may be a scene in the future that clears this up.
@@MoviesGoodInternetBad It depends on where Mark lives, and what rules/laws are in place in the Severance universe. It's heavily implied that Mark & Co live in an alternate reality. The state they live in has the abbreviation "PE". Which doesn't exist in our reality. The Lumon presentation in season 2 episode 1 also claims that they have branches in 206 countries. In the real world there are only 195 countries.
The pineapples are because back in the day, i.e when Kier was first starting Lumon, pineapples were considered an expensive delicacy. So many rich stately homes in UK have them carved into stair banister s and bookcases, portraits with ppl holding them. It fits with the out rated food buffets
not sure if you realized this but time might not just be missing cuz of blinking out in the elevator. Theres a possibility theres multiple timelines, more so with certain nuances such as out of time aasetetc and experiences from different innies. Wood carved for the innies, pulling up a rope to exit, animatronics? mrs.cobel said something interesting to helly s1 ep 9 about "all your friends will suffer and all of youll will be long gone.." Is there a possibility that not all of these people are from the same era? Seems like everything at severance is trying to manifest the ability of being immortal. many ways to beat the time except the one true way, bringing back the dead which they may be close to testing.
Never considered that specific theory personally, but yeah there is definitely something going on with this past/present aesthetic that we mentioned in the video. It could just be a stylistic choice for the show or it could be part of a deeper mystery, no idea!
Outie Helena tracks down outie Mark on the outside and we see them, in later clips, lying down kissing passionately, in a dimly lit environment. That's not a thruple, but a quadruple?
I can't decide if I think this show/world is in the past, present or future... We haven't seen a single "modern" vehicle, all the computer tech at Lumon is old af, but we have cell phones and severance?? It's giving me big BSG vibes in the way that perhaps technology advancements caused some sort of catastrophic event that led to an intentional tech regression (like how the Galactica remained safe from the initial Cylon attack because nothing was networked).
I think it’s an alternate reality. It doesn’t seem to be in the future and it’s set in the state PE, which doesn’t exist. It also said Lumon operates in 206 countries but there’s only 192 countries in reality. For those reasons, I’m leaning alternate reality.
@@franciet99 I suppose "old af" is relative but you've proven my point here. Not modern. All the cars look 80s-90s as well. Pre-gps, wifi, bluetooth etc.
Great breakdown of the episode and I just subscribed in response. Remember, we already received confirmation in episode 1x8 that Ms. Casey is Gemma. After Cobel shows disappointment in Ms. Casey resuming reading the characteristics of outie Mark (following a moment when Ms. Casey flashed some rare and perhaps first signs of a truly human interaction for him that incited an interesting reaction from Cobel), Milchick says "It's a good thing that they don't remember each other. It means that the chips work". Anyway - this whole interaction between Mark and Ms Casey plus Cobel's obsession with them makes me wonder what Cobel's end game is, how it blurs the lines of Lumon's mission and "Cold Harbor" and where it goes in season 2.
I think the climatic plot is going to be the innies fighting their outies to exist 100% of the time, since it’s the happiest best version of themselves.
The new intro has a shot of a car in a frozen lake(Cold Harbor?)...presumably Gemma's death scene. Previous death scene shots show Mark looking at a burning car, near a tree on the side of the road. Lumen must have faked her burning death.
Regarding Dylan's wife, I think she has an illness which is probably the reason he took the severed position. His first question upon being fired was 'what am I going to tell my wife?' then at the interview his first question is regarding health insurance. On the phone his wife's voice sounds a little raspy.
what if mark volunteered to have his wifes body experimented on by lumin. hes severed so he can focus on data refinement to bring her back. Mark seemed to get a little personal in his interview with Milchick when applying for the job. maybe he was explaining why she should be a candidate for lumins project.
Another theory I thought about after the video is that what if Lumon wanted her for some reason and faked the death to essentially kidnap her. So many options for where that thread goes

Oh I like this!

Licenses expire once every 4-8 years I think, so I think this probably debunks the future date theory

Outie Mark says that Gemma always had a back-up plan. Maybe she checked the donor box on her license. Bad idea in Kier land.
"Donor" taking on a whole new meaning! I like this idea.
Cold Harbor was a battle in the US Civil War where the Union got steamrolled
Did not know that. I wonder if that’s at all related or just coincidence
@MoviesGoodInternetBad I wonder. They mention Lexington, too. I don't know about Tumwater, but that's a place in Washington state

I like this answer, it plays along with the weird time period discrepancies in the show that we talked about.
"Fetid" and "Moppet" are both words from that same era when Kier started Lumon as well!
We definitely googled them before recording lol
You would rent a pineapple to put on appearances for parties and such. It’s such a fun history factoid.
So basically this company is completely stuck in an old time period. Old vocabulary, old traditions, etc. Very interesting.
Not me starting to smile at 23:22 LOL
Did it improve your mood though?

When Milchik tells Mark he found love (at Lumon)…Mark asks with who and Milchik completely disregards that question 👀
Points to Mark finding out who on the outside world...
Bobbing for pineapples.. Bob.. Pineapples.. SpongeBob confirmed 💡
Are ya ready kids?
@MoviesGoodInternetBad hell yea!!
Liked and subbed for being cool dudes
Thank you!

I’ve avoided watching the trailers to keep my spoilers to a minimum but this is very interesting. Seems Helena may have a change of heart this season
We have no idea if the people we see kissing passionately are innies or outies, have we ?
Just found your channel. Love the name of it. Enjoyed the breakdown.
Thanks for watching!

I'm still leaning towards it just being contained to the company specifically being stuck in the past, but it could go anywhere I think

Those types of computers are not old af. I worked at NASA in the 90s and worked on a similar computer.

The episode was very good overall. The cinematography and editing, gorgeous.
Probably the prettiest episode of the show so far
Also, I'm pretty sure Dylan's wife is Merritt Wever
Oooh, nice catch!
Confirmed! She's credited as 'Gretchen' on IMDB

It’s such an interesting concept because if one takes over, the other essentially dies

Yeah I think faking her death is all but confirmed at this point, but I think what is more interesting is why.
No, if you pay closer attention you'll notice that the car is actually belongs to Mrs. Cobbel
Great video! Just earned a sub 👍

The idea of her being sick and him not being able to handle it all day every day is a rather compelling one!
The severed being discriminated against is a metaphor for racial discrimination
Definitely

"fetid moppet" is language used in the 19th century.
Definitely something going on with all this old fashioned language/traditions
