In a county where we love our football, Ciarán McDonald still remains one of the greatest legends of all. Amazing player who has the respect of the entire GAA world. That says it all. Thank you, Ciarán, for your amazing contribution to Mayo GAA and which is still so much to the fore with the current Mayo team under the management of James Horan. Absolute LEGEND!!
I played soccer with him in my aunts garden in crossmolina in 1984.. he said I was a great player !.. thats some compliment from one of the greatest GAA players ever
He had to be the best and still is ... He would make you watch it because he was so good, And to think he never got a medal when he should have twenty medals or more .... West Of Ireland.............
@@MikeyJMJ But maybe he supports Mayo? I don't know much about Irish football but I know people who are from other countries that support teams not in other countries.
One of the most naturally talented gaelic footballers I have ever seen playing...particularly his kicking and passing ability were 2nd to none and made him a pleasure to watch live. He had a special ability that you're born with which would be impossible to coach.. Diarmuid Connolly is another player of McDonalds ilk with very similar attributes imo
Always remember a story a friend of mine from Mayo told me about him. His brother was working in dublin and was heading home to mayo for the weekend. Outside Athlone, he saw this lad tumbing for a lift at 11 or 12 at night on a Friday in the middle of Autumn and it turned out to be Ciaran McDonald on his way home for a match. He gave him a lift and dropped him off at some country pub in the middle of Mayo on his way home. The next day Ciaran lined out and playing a match.
The best footballer ever..he had it all..best passer ever..either foot didn't matter..hard as nails..such a pity he didn't win an All ireland..he's still gud enough to still be playing
Has he always spoken like this? He seems quite shy or nervous or something in the way he talks. Thanks for uploading video, really interesting interview and a player I admired as a kid.
Those interviewers are absolute muppets. He said it was not on his sister was verbally abused at a game and they asked him did he regret leaving. Obviously not, he had to make a point to those know it all county fans who think they can abuse county players and their families just because they feel like it.
I understand the country and his county are in awe of this fella. But As a footballer he’s awesome I’ll give him that. but as a human being this guy is a utter Clem(I can digress if you want). At least he has a face like a fishmongers greyhound.
Andrew Convey Nothing to saucy, but as a 16 year old I had the misfortune to work along side him as a machine driver/Labour for summer work between my studies, in total two summers. It was back when he was full pelt with mayo gaa and at first I was looking forward to working with him as I had held him with great esteem. But little did I know it would be my first encounter with a bully. I’ll tell you one incident only and it will give you a feel of what kind of human this guy is. As Forman he was over dishing out the meal tickets for the week. I was away from my parents galway home and working in Limerck paying diggs too so meal tickets meant a lot to a 16 year old at that time. When I would ask him for my weeks supply of meal tickets his reply was “your only half a man you don’t get them” laughing as he said it too and that just wasn’t the response to me it was for was for most of the younger fellas on site. Most of the younger workers would have to share tickets and club together so we could eat. It’s water under the bridge for me now, but I got my back up when I heard the shite coming out of his mouth in that interview. Never work with your hero’s! Moral of the story.
Always loved watching this man play for Mayo. Down to earth lad. Even more admiration for this man after watching this interview.
1 of the greatest players of all time.Best foot passer in the history of the sport.
He is a leftie and left handed or kicker is the best in any sport :-).
I agree. Only one player in recent memory that was comparable at putting a ball into your chest in your favour consistently is Marty Clarke from Down.
An absolute gentleman
Lovely man very clean player a gentleman
An excellent player and a lovely man kieran mc Donald
Excellent interview lads. Always admired Ciarán McDonald as a player. So graceful, so accurate, so tough!
He would fit perfectly into any modern team. He was one of the greatest and years ahead of his time.
I consider him the greatest ever Gaelic Footballer

@@robovac3557 Gaelic football is a different culture. He wouldn't have mentioned his county if he didn't support them.
@@MikeyJMJ I'm not so sure. Think I saw a picture of Irish players wearing the Jersey of a team that was English so I wouldn't be surprised.
