I did not know that jackie/big mamma bought the place, that makes me want to go even more because she was already proud of the quality of the food and her cooking skills, etc... this way, with her owning the place i can be sure of a quality product when i get the opportunity to visit. She is a great lady who cares about the quality of the food, and i do not think she would hire/keep an employee who was doing a half-hearted job on preparing the food, at least that is the impression i get from her in this mvf episode. God bless her and may her business prosper.
I went there a couple years back... excellent! I went because of this episode. I wonder what the impact of these shows have on business. Most locals are already aware, but perhaps tourists finally learn about it because of the show.
I can tell you from 1 episode that chaps pit bbq in baltimore had to open a second location, and their 1st location rocketed, they went from about 6 employees to about 30
i just have to say how happy i am that this portion is online. this is one of my fave episodes all because of how awesome big mama and adam are together, so funny!
watching this while im all the way here in NZ sighhh our country needs to learn and get some of these foods in here lol looks so good!! the only thing i can do is recreate this at home with the ingredients i can get but it will never be as good as big momma''s recipe mmmmmm!! mmmmm!!
That's my place, love it! My first time sold me! Big momma, you are so funny! Loving you girl! You and ur staff make that small place pop! My GramaJane was right! Food is DA BOMB!!!
What are your thoughts as to which was better? I know this thread is old, but I was just watching Man v Food. I visited when the original owners had it. It was slap-yo-mamma, I-want-to-marry-you awesomeness, and then some. You just asked for a fish--no number pieces asked--and you got 4-5 big pieces of fish, two slices of bread wrapped to go. Lines were always around the corner and down the block. I visited once when Big Mamma bought the place. She was selling the fish by pieces. Didn't know, so I was surprised. But Big Mamma was warm and funny, and working her recipe and food style.
the whole wheat sandwich bread (wonder) definitely makes the sandwich just that much better. i would rather have a fish sandwich from horace & dickie's than anyplace else, they are definitely the best. on a nice spring/summer day, pick up a fish sandwich there, go over to the park a few blocks away (i forget which park). you will be in heaven. if you are in new haven and can't get to horace & dickie's, d'amato's has the best fish sandwich in town.
The secret is in the flavor adam, the taste is in the flavor, the business is prospering because of the flavor, they will stay in business because of the flavor, lol, you have an mba from yale, the whole place runs on flavor, lol. Make the place as fancy as you want, but no flavor = out if business, not rocket science, lol, you know that

@@stevelogan5475 no hurt feelings mate I'm never serious either, this is just the internet. I use to live in DC and I really miss having Big Mama's fish
@@stealinglight just wanted you to know i was only joking, i'm retired at 56 but my wife is in the upper hierarchy with the IRS, and she makes trips to D.C. periodically. Next time she goes ,,( i have to pay my way, but i'm going with her for the food, lol) i'm going to 2 places to eat for sure, horace & dickies for the 6 filet jumbo fish sandwich, and ben's chili bowl for the half smoked sausage and a bowl of chili . After watching this episode, i can see how you would miss a place like this, fish looks delicious. We live now in northern kentucky, not far from cincinnati, ohio. There is a place there called " the alabama fish market", almost identical to horace & dickies, they serve the whiting fish, etc... just like horace & dickies, i am only appx. 30 minutes from there. Anyway, just wanted you to know i was only joking about adam with the flavor comments, lol, i thank you for accepting my apology mate, there was no harm/disrespect intended friend.
I was very disappointed with the food. Was not ready for it to be a take out only too. I can make better tasting fish at home. That and I must have gone at a bad time because everyone was acting like a total asshat.
I had that sandwich when I was in DC, and I can assure you every time I visit that city, I will not leave without having one of those.😋
