    Awesome video! B&Ws really do put a lot of detail in there speakers. Even for their entry level models, they have lots of technology going on. Also nice to see they make their own drivers.

    Can’t tell if the speaker basket is plastic or cast metal? The cone and magnet did look nice, and nice to see the adequate venting. Being that this is not a top-of-the-line product but still a nice speaker, I knew that it would not be the absolute best. It looks very similar to the older ones, except made in China to B&W spec instead of by B&W themselves in England.

    Went to Best Buy with a friend to listen and compare speakers. We had him shut off subwoofers because we just wanted to compare speakers. We were blown away by the Bowers & Wilkins 685 S2 bookshelf speakers. They sounded better than a $2,000 pair of Martin Logan's. I now have them in my living room and they sound fantastic.

    very nice quality mid driver!! alot of xmax for this kind of driver. good basket. cabinet also has some bracing and the tweeter is also good. And quite a big decent crossover. b&w knows there stuff!

    • @tomkocur
      @tomkocur 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't really see a lot of xmax there, VC looks pretty short. 3-4mm one way Xmax isn't anything out of the ordinary at this size

    • @notagunfreak8146
      @notagunfreak8146 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomkocur apparently these speakers have about 8 mm of max xmax!
      when they are broken in. Also the driver is very deep for that size!

    • @tomkocur
      @tomkocur 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@notagunfreak8146 driver depth or break-in have nothing to do with Xmax. Geometrical Xmax is just a difference between the height of the voice coil and height of the magnetic gap, or in other words how much the cone can travel with magnetic gap still fully filled by the voice coil.
      Cone can of course travel more, but that's not within the Xmax anymore, higher excursion means higher distortion and different parameters/driver behaviour.

    They've gone from the 2nd order x-over on the 600S3 series to a cheaper 1st order, with just a single inductor on the woofer and a single cap on the tweeter. 1st order has it's advantages as far as phase, but since it has a lot more overlap between drivers, it can cause problems in getting smooth response in that region. And even with the 1st orde crossover, they still have a huge dip in the midrange. Very poorly designed, from a company that used to be good. Now they charge more for a worse product just because of the name. You can get much better for less money from KEF or Wharfedale, as well as others
