    Blackmore is and will always be my first guitar hero. When I was a little boy in the mid-70s, there were no Clapton or Beck records in my house and there were only two Zeppelin albums. But my older brother had practically everything from Deep Purple and Rainbow. So Ritchie was my first big guitar reference, along with Gilmour and Steve Howe. These were the guys I listened to and not the "big three". I discovered Clapton, Beck and even Hendrix much later.

      S***, get to forgot to add Jeff Beck in my rant! There are just so many and you know I mean I'm from Boston so of course I love Aerosmith yeah Joe Perry's good of course so many good artists from that era . Also Boston was very good Van Halen when they came out I was 15 they were like something we never heard it was like crazy man you know? And these kids today I'm sorry I sound so old like you know they listen to all that rap stuff I'm not saying they're not talented on saying is it's way different kind of music then you know like like when I grow up on Funk and blues and rock cuz that's the kind of rock I like those that were influenced by Funk and blues you know and Jazz.

      thanks, but that's why Robin Trower has only wanted an American drummer--because he's a blues freak, which comes from America not the English which is much more classical in sound and feel. i was the same as you then but my bro did also have some of the blues influenced guys like Page, and became a total blues freak just after he finished school. so, today Rainbow is still a fave of mine, however, i'm glad i had some real blues to here to then even though it was from some English guys. Yard Birds had three of the biggest evolve which were Clappy, Page and Beck--it was a kind of farm band.

      In the 70's and 80's there were other Rock and roll Bands like Rare Earth and Grand Funk which people were saying that they were competing with each other. Thats funny you mention that
      I was just gonna say, my friend I grew up with was a major Sabbath fan. I was more into the purp. But as I got older, started liking Sabbath more. They were just too dark at first for me. And their recordings seemed to get worse as they went. Iommi always had a bass overtone to his guitar I didn't like. I liked Never Say Die, but the real BS fans didnt. It didnt matter too much to me. I had alot of albums my friends couldn't stand. I even often wondered "wtf was I thinking when I bought this" like the cars and B52s.... again, wtf was I thinking? So, I went through the Zeppelin era, which totally screwed my grades at school. My Pop wanted to kill Jimmy Page. Then Motorhead, and harder metal Maiden, Saxon, Accept, Priest
      Lots of goodies there. Then my hearing started to take a dive. But I had been playing and working at a night club, so that didnt help. Now, I still play (still suck too) and older than dirt.

      This is quite interesting, though it takes a while to get to the point. Their assessments of each other are pretty realistic, though I'm not sure Blackmore was better live than Page. Certainly Page was far superior in songwriting and studio playing. I can understand why he, Beck and Clapton might not have felt that Blackmore was a serious musician on their level. They pursued authenticity, each in his own way, and he was much more of a 'whatever works' character.
      Bottom line, Zep were original, they took music somewhere: Purple were much more basic, meat 'n' taters, like AC/DC.

      I set out to learn that and it just gets away from ya. How TF can anyone ramp up to play that fast and not get sloppy? I got the solo from Highway Star. I had that dialed in. Some of his stuff was just too diabolical. I had to nope out on some DP songs because I could never do them justice. I can admit to the same thing with a couple of Zep songs and a boatload of Jeff Beck stuff. To me, that is the mark of a genius guitar player. Not just speed, because Yngwie has that, and I couldn't care less, but playing something that is utterly beyond my capacity to even begin to duplicate the style. One of my favorite moment in the Perfect Strangers tour was when Blackmore is shredding on some Beethoven, with a laser generated image of B conducting him, and goes off script into some shredding and the cartoon B glared at him. It epitomized Ritchie. Just who DO you think you are mister?

  • @RushfanUK
    @RushfanUK ปีที่แล้ว +92

    Blackmore stands above all of them live as he never rehearsed solos, all his guitar solos have elements of improvisation in them, you can listen to however many versions there are of a live solo by Blackmore and none of them will be the same, this was at the heart of live Purple with Lord and Blackmore capable of making it up as they played and the other band members able to blend seamlessly into the improvisations.

    • @tagadabrothersband
      @tagadabrothersband ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It was the same for most guitarists at that time, all guitar solos had elements of improvisation in them. The versions were never the same, most of the time much longer thant the studio versions. But Blackmore himself said afterward that it was a wery bad idea for him to improvise most of his solos at that time, caus the result was very random depending on the concerts.

      You can’t compare mainstream music to Zappa’s experimental endeavors.
      Frank was a musical genius, no doubt. But his music was raunchy and not palatable. His guitar playing was almost completely pointless and definitely neurotic.
      Blackmore and Page are in a different category.

    I think that Blackmore attracted a lot of attention in the 70s, because in addition to being a brilliant guitarist, with his own unique style, he was very eccentric and had a difficult personality, in addition to the competition between "who was the best" after Hendrix (Clapton , Page, Beck...inner circle" mentioned in the video). It is worth mentioning that Clapton, Page, Beck had a common past in The Yardbirds, which undoubtedly brought them closer, even if with some competition... This perhaps distanced Blackmore of the other great guitarists of the time.

    Феномен Блэкмора заключается в том, что синергетический эффект его составляющих как музыканта, шоумена, бизнесмена и человека (которые будучи взятыми в отдельности не кажутся многим людям чем-то гениальным - даже игра на гитаре) дал на выходе рок-звезду с харизмой, затмевающей очень и очень многих. Далеко не у всех великих так получилось. Его влияние на каждое следующее поколение рок-музыкантов очень велико, пусть даже кто-то из них из-за ложных амбиций данное влияние отрицает :) И не ослабевает с годами. Такие дела.

    Generally speaking, history will look back more favorably on bands/artists that stayed together for the most part, versus bands with numerous lineup changes and infighting. Additionally, if a member of the band, or an artist should die early, that too helps to cement a legacy. Certainly Ritchie’s demanding approach and strong willed, aloof personality has not endeared him to the masses; however, I think it’s also worth noting that given the sonic differences between Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, the latter had broader appeal. As an example, when I was in school - 80s & 90s, no girls were listening to Deep Purple. The only people who were listening to Deep Purple were band people and metal heads, whereas just about everyone to some extent listened to Led Zeppelin. Objectively, love him or hate him, Ritchie Blackmore is one of the most talented and accomplished rock guitarists with few others at his level.

Ritchie may well have made a qualifying statement about Jimmy's improvisational skills, but Jimmy knew this was coming from an impeccable craftsman who's standards were extremely high. Also, don't forget that Jimmy was also very critical of other artists during interviews. The one piece of Mr Blackmore’s work that for me epitomises his craft, his tone, his touch, his lyricism and his poetry is the track “When A Blind Man Cries”. That’s not a remastered version, not any live version, but the original as issued on vinyl as a single B-side to “Never Before” in 1972.
    And Mr Blackmore hates it.

Got to see the greatest of all these tremendous bands and i Germany, bands that i never heard of but i was at the live show in Tokyo when Purple recorded the stellar live album. Ritchie and Ian absolutely unbelievable! Seen them before that though in Belgium, Germany and of Course in England. Their work still holds up and as a musician myself i have seen alot of egos that outwieghed the talent so, when it came to Page or Blackmore being the better technician and improvisor?, Blackmore hands down. I love Jimmi but he is not even in my top 20 let alone top ten or better. But i am well aware that it is all about what moves you and your genre' taste that forms your opinion. Clapton is a great blues player. Page is a pretty good arrainger, but Blackmore like the best of the best did not play guitar. The guitar was just the mechanical expression of his soul. Like the way Stevie Ray Vaughn, Hendrix, and Mahavishnu Jonh Macglauklin(?correct spelling) became one with their instrument just to name a few.

Then I'd say, Rainbow! Better guitar player AND better vocalist! Everyone just laughed at me. Tell the truth, I'm not a musician, was just a teenager partying & going to as many concerts as possible, and I think most of us here would admit that we all kinda took the whole music scene for granted in the early-mid 1970s. The music was so good, so intense, I couldn't imagine Rock N Roll ever being anything but the A #1 music genre in the world, it would always rule supreme...you know. Anyway Rainbow w/ Blackmore & Dio are still my favorite band ever, Alvin Lee and Ten Years After a close second, but even still, in my mind almost all those bands are even-steven, all an equal part of the greater good, and how could you pick one individual musician over another? They all drove each other to get better & better, and their likes, I fear, will never be seen upon this earth again. Too bad, but I'm glad I was there when I was...

    It's not always who is the really the best but who have better background. I grow up with Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin and both are great. But if I really wanted to enjoy full hard rock sound my choice go to Deep Purple as they had John Lord which with his organs playing gave the full enjoyment . Imagine The Doors without Ray Manzarek, they have some historical songs tanks to sound of Ray organs . Compared Deep Purple had Ian Paice, Zeppelin John Bonham, for me there were the same greatest drummer of time. Ritchie and Jimmy are in the same rank , just Ritchie was innovative virtuous on guitar . I think is the typical British behaviour in validation to always push up the one with better connection in high society or higher family background and it's the big shame that late Queen did not invite Ritchie when she invited Page , Clapton , May,.Anyhow Ritchie will always remain real legend in heart of all guys who grows up with Deep Purple and all bands of 70'.

    Nobody can put up such uplifting, fiery and swinging guitar solos as Ritchie Blackmore's solos on Lazy!😎💙Page maybe is a better songwriter and if talking about riffs I can say both are equal.😎💙

    Plant had a hell of a cheek calling anyone else an imitator.

      He didn't imitate anyone. Don't say Steve Marriot. He might have been an influence but they don't sound anything alike.

      @@user-dh5bnafe4b Think the OP is referring more to Led Zep being notorious for ripping off songs. I personally have no problem with using existing ideas in new songs if you can get away with it, but it is a bit rich to complain about people copying your style when your blatantly copying other people's music yourself.

      Reinventing isn't the same as mere copying though. For instance, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You has no musical similarity whatsoever to Anne Bredon's original recording nor to Joan Baez's cover of it, where it was named as "Traditional" and Page just assumed that was the case, never having even heard of Bredon. His arrangement is a completely different piece of music apart from the words, even the vocal melody is different. Bring It On Home, apart from some words and the title is a standard 12-bar blues with a completely original fast section in the middle. Curiously, nobody seems to want to slam Deep Purple for blatantly ripping off and not crediting It's A Beautiful Day's song Bombay Calling for Child In Time or Rick Nelson's Summertime for Black Night. Black Sabbath's Paranoid riff is just the end-of-verse one from Dazed And Confused played at double speed, the Opening Riff to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is pretty much a copy of the intro to Hocus Pocus by the Dutch band, Focus. The verse music from Changes is just a version of Birth by The Peddlers. It's only Led Zeppelin that gets stuck with the plagiarism label though whether through jealousy, ignorance or plain old-fashioned double standards.

    I have to agree with Blackmore on Clapton. Page had far more musical ideas, and live, Eric stays in one spot and stays within himself, where Page would often play way out on the edge of his technical ability to the point where there were mistakes, but damn it's exciting!

    I've never been a Purple fan but I do think Blackmore was (yes I know he's still going) an amazing electric guitar player.

    Richie is a fantastic player. However as a person ,you'd best flatter him to get anywhere.

      Actually, afaik he doesn't like flattering. Maybe I remember it right, but IIRC RB or EVH said that when they met before VH were really big/famous, EVH complimented him very nicely and RB just wrote him off as a nobody. Also, Satch said that RB is one of his greatest influences and RB commented, that Satch is good, but hasn't got any soul in his playing and thought it was more or less boring to him. For YM he said, great player, many notes, but I would like to see him play those things on one string (whatever that meant)...
