Electric toothbrushes do indeed a better job at cleaning the teeth but context matters: In this video, you demonstrated the cleaning by a normal toothbrush with a technique of an uneducated child. The proper way would be to brush thoroughly vertically (and also using tooth paste). What makes the electric toothbrush better is taking the responsibility from me away to use a proper and thorough brushing technique as it cleans by just gliding over the teeth and often having an app support with guided directions for optimal cleaning (e.g.: Philips Sonicare DiamondClean).

Floss and brush everytime after eating (and specially after eating sugary food), and go to the dentist only once a year. You'll never have any bleeding, pain, sensitivity, etc.

I have a full insurance so they get paid every month but have to cover all expenses if my teeth decay. I'm pretty sure they have actuaries that know their job. There is an excessive amount of people in this comment section that are ignoring simple physics. If you need to polish the hood of a car in 2 minutes, do you think it'll be done better/faster by hand or with an electric buffer? Of course it will be better with the electric one, a good pad, and polish. As for the vibrations, doesn't a vacuum cleaner with a rotating brush make the carpet vibrate the dirt loose while the suction lifts the dirt away? Yes, yes it does while also working better than just using the round nozzle and sticking it into the carpet. Assuming all brushing times and thoroughness are equal, your teeth will always turn out cleaner with a quality electric brush, compared to using a manual or cheap knockoff brush from the dollar store. Especially with back teeth where you can't get a good scrubbing motion.

Interesting fact, if your brush head is dirty then you can dip the toothbrush head into a cup of water and turn on the toothbrush. The vibrations free the little gunk from the hairs in your toothbrush and you can see it in the water. So in fact they do a even better job at cleaning themselves. (this only works for electric toothbrushes that vibrate)
I used sonic toothbrush for two years and I started having terrible ear pain bouts. It took me a while to connect the dots, because all studies (and all doctors) say that sonic brushes are absolutely harmless. But I can feel the vibrations travelling from teeth through my head. When I stopped using a sonic tooth brush, the ear pain also stopped. Could be just a coincidence but I do not believe that.

I don't need a 90USD tooth brush to clean tartar from my teeth. I haven't had build up in decades. If you want to make a science video about the power of vibrations, how about showing us how high frequency oscillations can be used with a dull metal implement to cut through metal, plastic and wood in seconds? Also talk about how HF oscillations can be quite dangerous to the human body, and how these types of brushes have been known to damage enamel, dislodge fillings, and cause gum damage. Disappointing.
I'm utterly disappointed. I wasn't expecting this from you. I'm not a dentist but a doctor, and I have bunch of friends who are dentists. They often share stories of people asking if such brushes are better or even worth the price. The short answer is almost never, and definitely not in this case. You don't need all this fancy tech to clean your mouth. Your body isn't a machine for you to shove all these electric tools into your mouth. A regular toothbrush and floss will do the job just fine. Also, that brush didn't even clean properly and left Nutella in the interdental spaces but you cut it out, which is a shameful deception coming from a science channel.

1. The dirty floor mat was amazing. 2. The toothbrush test was ridiculous because you brushed the teeth so poorly and slowly. Also it was an inaccurate representation since we don't brush our teeth with a mouth full of water. So the ultrasonic waves couldn't have transferred to the cracks of your teeth without your mouth filled with water. The sponsorship doesn't mean it's a lie but considering it was a ridiculous claim, it's very suspicious.
If possible can you try an experiment that I came up with. The things you need are an empty room, a light source and you inside the room. What I have in mind is that , when the light source is turned on you are able to see the walls of the room because they reflect light from the light source. But what if we make the surface of the walls so imperfect that in whatever direction light may hit the wall it does not get reflected to atleast a single point in the room. Which means if you observe the room from that point, even if there is a light source in that room, you would not be able to see anything like the wall and the ceiling in the room.

When brushing teeth on a normal way, there isn't That much water around, so will the sonic have similar results in a normal situation? Am using an original Philips Sonicare for many years now, was a huge improvement after normal toothbrushes, can confirm they work excellent. No issues at the dentist half year appointments, despite only brushing once a day before going to sleep. On my second one now, first one dropped on the floor and died after many years of cleaning. Original brushes last long, and you can get them cheaper when you look for offers. I highly recommend them Sonicare, but normal toothbrushes are more affordable...

Good video. But, the demonstration with Nutella is not representative at all. We don't brush our teeth under water, although it is showing the brush generating ultrasound nicely. Sorry, but this is not convincing. To me it also feels like you were biased and cleaned the teeth model without putting much effort.
I am not truly sure what is going on. This science channel is getting more and more un-science-ti-fik. From promoting royal title to reviewing products instead of the actual science. I used to dislike the repeated "OK" at every cut scene. (Don't believe me? Watch this channel's older clips) I tried to swallow my 'pride' and presume that is a habit, and focus on the science instead. That OK OK OK OK later is drastically reduced. nah I saw the dark spots when it was in the water, then you took it out and it magically has no dark spots between the teeth and gum... must redo without edits
A few reasons for that. For one when he took the teeth out of the water, there was a layer water there, reflecting everything very well. There was way better ligthning out of the water vs in the water. Also the quality is night and day (it's probably way zoomed in on the water shot and just zoomed out when he takes it out since you can't see too much detail in that murky water anyways). Long story short, underwater the colours are compressed together into "blobs" and when you take it out of the water, you can see the curved surface better with light reflecting from it, better lighting, quality and all. (also when you go frame by frame, you can get to frames with better lighting at areas and you can see there aren't holes between the teeth - when it's more sideways and not facing the camera)
Rotating electric toothbrushes are better than up and down toothbrushes because the rotating heads sweep debris out from under your gums whilst up and down toothbrush heads sweep it under your gums

Food Theory did a video similar to this testing various electric and sonic brushes and found that they weren't that effective compared to manual brushing but even with their video they failed (just like this one) to take into account that electric and sonic toothbrushes are meant to make *normal brushing faster* not to make you work less to brush. I have an electric toothbrush and I use it the way I use a non-electric. I just don't have to stand there brushing my teeth for two minutes anymore. Just 30 seconds and I get the same clean. I'm still manually running the brush over my teeth like I would if it wasn't vibrating my gums off lmao What's better to you? 1. Holding your hand still for two minutes and moving the brush in your mouth along your teeth 2. Moving the brush in an eliptical motion and scrubbing manually for two minutes 3. Here in Germany, all electric toothbrushes slow down, the more you push them against your teeth, to protect from abrasion.
My Oral-B electric tooth brush does the same and it lights up red to tell you to let up on your pressure.

I use steel wool and lava soap. They work much better than sonic, electric or manual toothbrushes. But I do have a problem with bleeding gums.
If you use an electric angle grinder for between your teeth your gums will thank you (if they grow back).

I'm not a dentist but a doctor, and I have bunch of friends who are dentists. They often share stories of people asking if such brushes are better or even worth the price. The short answer is almost never, and definitely not in this case.
You don't need all this fancy tech to clean your mouth. Your body isn't a machine for you to shove all these electric tools into your mouth. A regular toothbrush and floss will do the job just fine. Also, that brush didn't even clean properly and left Nutella in the interdental spaces but you cut it out, which is a shameful deception coming from a science channel.

2. The toothbrush test was ridiculous because you brushed the teeth so poorly and slowly. Also it was an inaccurate representation since we don't brush our teeth with a mouth full of water. So the ultrasonic waves couldn't have transferred to the cracks of your teeth without your mouth filled with water. The sponsorship doesn't mean it's a lie but considering it was a ridiculous claim, it's very suspicious.

The comparison is unfair mainly because you should have tested the "sonic" tootbrush against a regular electric one, not against a regular tootbrush.

If possible can you try an experiment that I came up with. The things you need are an empty room, a light source and you inside the room. What I have in mind is that , when the light source is turned on you are able to see the walls of the room because they reflect light from the light source. But what if we make the surface of the walls so imperfect that in whatever direction light may hit the wall it does not get reflected to atleast a single point in the room. Which means if you observe the room from that point, even if there is a light source in that room, you would not be able to see anything like the wall and the ceiling in the room.

Am using an original Philips Sonicare for many years now, was a huge improvement after normal toothbrushes, can confirm they work excellent.
No issues at the dentist half year appointments, despite only brushing once a day before going to sleep.
On my second one now, first one dropped on the floor and died after many years of cleaning.
Original brushes last long, and you can get them cheaper when you look for offers.
I highly recommend them Sonicare, but normal toothbrushes are more affordable...

Good video. But, the demonstration with Nutella is not representative at all. We don't brush our teeth under water, although it is showing the brush generating ultrasound nicely. I am not truly sure what is going on. This science channel is getting more and more un-science-ti-fik. From promoting royal title to reviewing products instead of the actual science. I used to dislike the repeated "OK" at every cut scene. (Don't believe me? A few reasons for that. For one when he took the teeth out of the water, there was a layer water there, reflecting everything very well. There was way better ligthning out of the water vs in the water. Also the quality is night and day (it's probably way zoomed in on the water shot and just zoomed out when he takes it out since you can't see too much detail in that murky water anyways). Long story short, underwater the colours are compressed together into "blobs" and when you take it out of the water, you can see the curved surface better with light reflecting from it, better lighting, quality and all. (also when you go frame by frame, you can get to frames with better lighting at areas and you can see there aren't holes between the teeth - when it's more sideways and not facing the camera)

Food Theory did a video similar to this testing various electric and sonic brushes and found that they weren't that effective compared to manual brushing but even with their video they failed (just like this one) to take into account that electric and sonic toothbrushes are meant to make *normal brushing faster* not to make you work less to brush. I have an electric toothbrush and I use it the way I use a non-electric. I just don't have to stand there brushing my teeth for two minutes anymore. Just 30 seconds and I get the same clean. I'm still manually running the brush over my teeth like I would if it wasn't vibrating my gums off lmao

1. Holding your hand still for two minutes and moving the brush in your mouth along your teeth
2. Moving the brush in an eliptical motion and scrubbing manually for two minutes
3. Moving the brush in an eliptical motion or up and down while the brush *also* moves in a different direction for 30 sec to 1 min
