I´ve found that it is very productive with Moebius to copy one panel but adding something of my own.. extra object, extra character, change the clothes... it makes it similar enough so you can copy his technique but also different so you have to solve resolve the extra stuff on your own. Nice video!
The thing most interesting and frankly most useful about Moebius is that he was not only adept but masterful at pen&ink in a WIDE variety of different styles, ALL unique to him. Seek our his work! There's an education in every panel of every story from "Lieutenant Blueberry" to "Arzach" to "Airtight Garage" & more! Get to work!
Another well crafted video with the kind of advice that I don't see a lot elsewhere. I like how you break things down simply for beginners. Often instructional videos assume too much knowledge. You also do it without sounding condescending. Love it
I appreciate that! I've always enjoyed workshops where the facilitators had an inclusive approach to instruction - and I wanted to do the same. Glad to hear that you liked it.
I've just found your channel and loved all the content! It is so nice to watch you draw and analyse great master's work. I am no artist or illustrator, but an enthsiast. Thank for sharing your thoghts and works.
Awesome, thank you!
Finding purpose-driven practice is great. I have been floating aimlessly, adrift in a haze, wanting more art in my daily life without knowing how or why. Thanks for the great video content. I really appreciate you sharing your own journey and process. As a noob, I have been overwhelmed by the huge corpus of content and humbled by seeing the amazing creators and masters' work. I am working on enjoying the journey. And setting small personal goals. Thx!
A wonderfully clear explanation of the thought needed to grow and self-evaluate.
We need more women like You, to make the world a better place 😊🙏❤️ and lovely cats as well 😉
Your paintings are significant and valuable to the world of art.
Yet again. Fascinating and so artistically appealing 😊
You are quite generous in your thoroughness. Thank you!
My pleasure! And thank you for the kind words. More videos on similar topics coming soon 😊
Amazing video, thank you for taking the time to share these bits of wisdom with us!
My pleasure! Thank you for watching and have a great day! 😊
a great video! well done!
Very good points here. Focusing on what you need to improve and studying the experts who have mastered those areas will help immensely. Thanks for the PDF!
Absolutely! You're welcome and thanks for watching!
Artista inigualável, um gênio em sua arte, Moebius era fantástico.
Moebius was a genius for sure. Glad that you enjoyed the video!
Amazing artist 🎨 I will always cherish your masterpieces and hold them close to my heart forever ❤
That's very kind of you, thanks very much 😊
I really enjoy these videos . It's lovely seeing a skilled artist talk about learning and improving; sharing their difficulties and inspirations. When things aren't quite coming together, or the improvements are slowing down a bit, it's super reassuring and motivating to know there are other artists out there persevering. I love your drawings and we seem to share many artist inspirations. Thanks.
As for recommendations: Claire Wendling is an absolute favourite, though she mainly works in pencil.
Thank you very much! I appreciate the kind words. Claire Wendling does beautiful work - the list keeps growing 🙂
Beautifull ink drawings, and you take time to record these videos and write comments with interesting ideas and analyses. Great artist!
Thank you so much 😀
great, insightful video, thank you.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
This is great. Would love to see you cover Gibson, Franklin Booth, Bernie Wrightson, Heinrich Kley or Frank Cho.
Thanks for the suggestions! I hadn't thought of Heinrich Kley, just added him to the list. I'm a fan of the others you mention so my list keeps growing 😊
Coll.
Brilliant. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
0:45 This is such great advice!
I loooove this channel. Thanx so much. Peace.
Happy to hear, thank you.
Superb! Really nice
Thank you! Cheers!
I enjoy your videos a lot ❤ Very helpful!
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching 🙂
Thanks again Chloe for another great video! I like your two different approaches. I would love to see a Virgil Finlay master study.
Finlay is a classic for sure
Great video & learning improvement idea. Perhaps you could suggest an artist that is great at botanical ink work, that would be appreciated. Thank you & look forward to more of your videos, Larry
I like the works of Maggie Enterrios @colorflowerscape for botanical ink work (and she does great colours as well).
@@longstrideillustration Thank you very much for your quick informative reply.
Wow, I could not have the patience for that line work, it is so precise and beautiful but I have no clue how you manage it 😍
Moebius is quite proficient with the clean lines ... something I aspire to master as well some day. Thanks for watching, and if you haven't already, have a look at the blog post for additional information about how to do Master Studies to meet your art goals: longstrideillustration.com/accelerate-pen-and-ink-skills-with-master-studies/
One stroke at a time 👍
As an illustrator of 30+ years, I still continue to learn and improve. One of the most important and overlooked concepts is, "How do you learn?" Not everyone learns in the same way. Some need things explained in words and others need to be shown, or a combination of both. First determine how you learn, then alter the lesson to suit your preference. Otherwise you'll struggle, get frustrated and rage quit while taking pot shots at your self esteem.

Very helpful thank you. I like this kind of video
So nice of you to say. Check out the blog post as well, there's additional info: longstrideillustration.com/accelerate-pen-and-ink-skills-with-master-studies/
One of the things that drives me nuts about Giraud is that he often drew stream of consciousness comics and would draw his cartoons straight to ink (no pencils) and very fast!
What a cartoonist!
Haha Kim Jung Gi is also like this.
I've watched many interviews of both Giraud and master Kim Jung Gi, and although they are genius artists, they also practiced constantly. I find it motivating to see hard working geniuses. (and agreed, that can drives us nuts too haha).
Great video, thanks
Very welcome, thanks for watching!
Thank you Chloe for such insightful and instructive videos! Now there are so many great artists that I will try to restrict myself to just 5. I will start with Frank Frazetta as his work is quintessential. Next Geof Darrow, Kelly Jones, Esteban Maroto and Walter Simonson. I would love to see your take on any of these or any other artists you find interesting. Thank you again for all you do.
Wonderful! You really know your stuff, all amazing artists. I totally forgot about Geof Darrow's work. I've added these to my list and of course, Frazetta was already at the top 😊 Thanks for watching and for sharing these 5.
I noticed on a previous video you admire Harry Clarke, a master study of one of his pieces would provide plenty of insights no doubt, keep up the great work!
Yes! I'm a big fan of Harry Clarke and his work is on my list for a future video. I'm glad to hear this suggestion, thank you!
thanknyoubvery much! :)
Welcome!😊
Great video! I really appreciate your analytical approach to improvement. An artist I really like, is Rockwell Kent, he has a sort of wood block approach to doing pen and ink that is very effective.
Thanks very much! Rockwell Kent's work is amazing, thank you for the suggestion, added to the list!
Hi Chloe, very inspiring video. A possible suggestion for next master study : Sergio Toppi, or great Jorge Zaffino, that would be great
Excellent suggestions, both very fun Master styles that I would really enjoy to spend time with drawing.
I’ve been a huge fan of his work since I was a preteen in the early 80s. I always assumed he used a brush for his lines? And as far as another suggested artist. I would love to see you do an episode on Charles Burns.
Thanks for the suggestion! I looked up Charles Burns, I like his bold rendering treatment, especially on hair.👍
Moebius was insanely creative and productive, I don’t know how he ever slept! I wonder if Aubrey Beardsley would be an interesting artist to study for a video?
Yes to Beardsley, on my list. Thanks for the suggestion.
i love moeb :3
❤
God, this is soothing.
Thank you! Glad to hear it.
very nice ❤️😍
Thank you! Cheers!
I’ve been studying Joeseph Clement Coll. If you haven’t looked at his stuff, do so. It’s astounding
He's a classic for sure and on my list, thanks for your recommendation!
Thank you. By way of contrast, how about Mervyn Peake?
Mmh yes, that could be interesting. Nearly the opposite of "ligne claire". On the list, thank you!
I recommend Peter Han 😄
Yea, Peter Han is great with the brush pens. I'll add his work to my list 🙂
Is there any chance you can do a Barry Windsor Smith study? just linework.
it's highly likely! Barry Windsor Smith is high on my list! 😀
@@longstrideillustration awesome he is my all time favorite but I cannot figure out which tools he is using. I am assuming it's mostly brushwork he is doing but I haven't figured out how to replicate it.
I would love to get better at pen and ink, though i have shakey hands, and cant even draw a normal thing in pencil without it taking a while. When i take time on sketches they can look pretty good but with my hands im just not sure id be able to do pen and ink. Main inspiration for wanting to do pen and ink was Kentaro Miura, berserk is one of my favorite manga series thought it doesnt help that i've only ever read 2 and one of those was when i was little but oh well.😅 im not a big anime or manga guy but Berserk was an exception
Kentaro Miura is a huge inspiration for me as well. I'm sorry to hear about your shakey hands, though it sounds like you are still able to do some art when you take your time and also to appreciate pen and ink. I wish you the best with your projects and thanks for watching!
Practice practice practice. If your shaky hands is a medical thing, try some abstract style art.
Love that you do reproductions. I do them too. :) What's your favourite Moebius image?
I like his black and white pen and ink pieces best. Thanks for watching!
i started drawing when i was in 7th grade and the teacher tolled a story and showed us a pilot fighter and after lunch we where tolled to draw him
and school was out at 3 pm and the next morning i was drawing from his photo that the teacher put on everyones long table and when the other kids saw
the drawing they said your going to get in trouble and the kids got loud saying your going to get in big trouble the teacher walked over and looked at my drawing and the photo
it was bigger then the photo what was on the table and she dropped her papers and when to the next room and got the other teacher and when to get the school principal and
i said did i dont it wrong and he said no not at all it looks just like him and later that day familys picking up there kids where going around tables looking at every photo and
i when to get some water to drink and when i came back everyone was around my table and said i did a good job , and i still draw today and i got into reading comic books at a young age too all the way up to the 90s and stopped i knew alot of comic book artiest and i have a few Moebius art books still along with others i still like
frank frazetta
boris vallejo
Luis Royo
I have digitally traced a couple of my favorite comics inkers, essentially to see if I can even DO so digitally. I get about 90% there, I think, especially over brush artists.Rudy Nebres is IMO the greatst talent with a brush who ever worked in the biz. His inking with John Buscema on the B&W Conan books is jaw-dropping. Moebius is no slouch, either, just not technically in the same class. A better artist overall, yes, but not nearly as skilled. I don't think Jean Giraud was ever about laying down the perfect line, anyway; if you look at his Lt. Blueberry work, it is very energetic and loose, certainly not "pretty" except in the sense of the whole. It's wonderful to have so many brilliant artists for inspiration.
I totally agree with what you're saying, they had different styles and intention - both prolific. Rudy Nebres worked with some of the Great penciller's and I love John Buscema's work. I've added both to my list, thank you!
Hello, I like your work. You may consider "Kim Jung Gi" for your next work. Thanks.
On my list! 🙂
Your Canadian?
Yes, Canadian.
thanks for the video, but moebius used a diferent type of pen, i think this pen that you are using made your life harder
I've heard from subscribers that he used Gillott nibs with Sable brushes, which require expert skills. The crowquill was next best thing to get similar line quality at my skill level.
@@longstrideillustration oh sure. got it. thanks a lot for sharing.
Don’t listen to fools like this who can’t draw. It stems from having a love for drawing before the age of 10 and continuing with it for the rest of your life
