Hey Dave, if you want to print action figures you need to find a file for them, which there are, and they need to be printed in many parts usually.

I think FDM will eventually get to a place where you could actually print an articulated action figure but yeah..we ain't really there yet. Pieces is the way to go

That and clearances between moving/interlocking parts. Nearly every 3d printable articulated figure I've found and even paid money for had huge issues with parts not fitting together properly, and looking at the files, that parts are always designed with no tiny gaps between parts, which is kinda important for things to actually fit together without tons of sanding.
Like a LOT of 3d print designers seem to have little understanding of practical engineering more often than not.
Add to that the difference between individual printer configurations and whether or not they've been calibrated to print dimensionally accurate parts and printing figures becomes a headache really quick.
The few noteworthy figures I've found seem to be the exception rather then the rule.
Basically you'll need lots of patience to get something you like. A bit of 3d editing skills helps too, but you will also cringe a LOT.
Designing your own figure from scratch and iterating on it seems to be the way to go, and that's a hell of a process.

Thank you. Brilliant timing. I just got hold of a creality 3d printer a couple of weeks ago. Currently the owner of multiple large splodges of filament that were supposed to look like action figures but look like a pair of legs attached to a ball of yarn. My cat loves them... Anything that lets me do that faster sounds like a winner:)

I absolutely love 3D printing things for my figs. I've been an engineering student for years and have had 3D modeling experience from like 8th grade to my current year in college. I've posted some of my printed stuff in the Displaying Model Behavior Fb group, but I've always wanted to try to print individual sentinel pieces and assemble them, as I've 3D modeled dozens upon dozens of large moving mechanical objects over the years. Honestly simple sketching and extruding goes a looong way when you make effect pieces for figures, especially when you experiment with different colors. As for diorama props, I've yet to do so but honestly it wouldn't be very hard at all for me personally, I usually get pretty detailed with my work anyways so I'd love to just go all out on something like a shipping container or a smashed up car.

As someone who VERY recently tried to print a 1/12th scale cargo container good luck fitting it on your printer 😂. Ended up using a whole spool and a bit on a 1/3rd of one. Works amazing for diorama parts and that is mostly what I have been printing with it. Also made a set of wolverine claws for my guy. That took some fine tuning and multiple iterations to get the proper fit. But you are 100% correct it is an ALL in and expensive hobby. Going to be trying to make some marvel legends peg adapters to interchange head and and other pieces for custom figures

I got a 3d printer modeled and printed my own fully movable space marine figure. Had to do it in parts and took over 30 hours. (it is 8 inches tall) then a year later Mcfarlane Toys come out with their own. The only consolation is that mine is lore size accurate when you compare to other 6 inch toys.

Since I’m not a great sculptor, 3D printing has always seemed like the way to go, but it’s so oddly specific with the tolerances and such, and you have to be very careful and calculated in how everything fits together, especially if you’re making an action figure. Like anything 3D printing is a tool and you have to be discerning in how you utilize it.
I’ve had an idea for a Ness figure from Earthbound to add to my Smash Bros collection for years but I’ve never taken the plunge because it really seems like a lot of work.

But the one that, I'm really interested in was a dude who was taking commissions for sentinels that look like the ones from the X-men cartoon and they look so sick and they also have some good articulation from what I've seen. When it comes to 3d printing your own action figures, 3d painting IS there. YOU are not there. You have layer issues, stringing, gaps in your layers, etc. It takes time to learn how to use things properly. With time and kilos of spaghetti, your prints will come out well enough that you won't need to much processing (sanding and filling)

  • @boeingnz

i use both. resin printers results are more fragile. i printed the GIJoe sky hawk that is available on thingaverse all in resin, when i went to paint it, the cat knocked it on the floor and it SHATTERED.
i prefer resin printers solely because they are less finicky to maintain.

I think your video is misleading. You have the tool to produce the parts for action figures. You do not have the software and knowledge to design action figures. I would say 95% of hobbyists that own a 3D printer do not own Zbrush including myself. The difference though is knowing where to look to get these files for figures. Cults3D has plenty of action figures including an incredibly detailed Sentinel. Other sites like Thangs, Printables, cgtrader, or Thingiverse have some stuff but the quality is hit and miss. Sure, posable figures of exactly what you’re looking for can be tough to find but finding a character that’s not posable is generally not that hard to find. Example- the majority of MCU characters can be found as non-posable. 3D Zip guy does a lot of posable action figures.

The problem with 3D printing is that you have a lots of printers to chose from. There are printers that you have to assemble and tweak or upgrade and there are machines that are just ready to go from the box.
Then you have tons of websites you can get nice models from. My favorite is to directly support the artists on patreon or Etsy, but you also have printables, cults3D and thingiverse.
I have been into 3D printing for a while, and made the most stupid mistake of getting an Ender 3 v2 as the first printer. As big as the community is around it, it's just not worth it. The Ender machines are like 70% of you having to tweak, replace and troubleshoot. This can be really fun for people who are technical and like to poke around, but absolutely hell for those who just want to print.
Many in the community are in the thoughts of "Well, if you can't assemble and understand the machine then maybe you should not print." It's like the stupid car people that think that you should learn to drive a stick instead of automatic because then you know how to really drive.
Well, one day I had enough of the stupid Ender shit and sold it to a guy on FB. Turned out it had 6 assemble faults and that contributed to the printer not working properly. And here is the first problem, how should I know it's not put together properly if I don't know anything about the printer?
After that I got an Anycubic Vyper and that was a game changer. All I had to do was screw together the Z and Y axis and connect the screen. It took me 10 minutes to put together and I was off printing stuff.
Now I'm waiting for the new Bambu lab P1P and I'm very excited about it.
My point is, don't get discouraged about 3D printing! Find the right machine for you!

Creality 3D printers are absolute garbage.
Have you tried to call the company yet?
You'll notice they are in China and you're not going to get anyone on the phone.
There is no customer service whatsoever.
And you'll be lucky to get anything that is intact when you receive it.
I'm being honest from my perspective and my own experience.
And I don't care if any of you hobbyists have anything to say about what I've said.
I'm just trying to warn the novice out there who might think about purchasing one of these heaps of garbage.
    I'm doing you a favor.
