Love the old 629, i have a no dash with 8 3/8 inch barrel, pinned and recessed with original goncalo alves target stocks and got finally factory smooth target stocks, they looking amazing on this great revolver. Greetings from austria
Mine is a couple years old. Listen to this. The cylinder pawl on my S+W model 69 would not engage the cylinder, leaving the cylinder to freewheel around. It eventually did work again but that was all I needed to see to not trust the revolver. S+W was notified and sent me a shipping label to send it in for closer inspection. That condition could have been a catastrophic failure sever injury or death. I have owned many S+W revolvers and this was an issue I had never seen before. I have only put a couple hundred rounds through this .44 magnum, there shouldn’t be any issues. at this point. Be aware.
I have a model 29-3 six inch, which I bought new in 1980-something. It seems to be a lot smoother than the classic I looked at last year. Now, I know you can't judge a whole production run on just one or two revolvers but that was my impression. Like you, I prefer the "oversized" Goncalo Alves target grips that it came with.. just seems to fit my hands better than the new style. I've seen other videos where people complain about the barrels canting off to the side, but I haven't experienced this myself. What are your thoughts on this?
But they have failed. The metal is softer and warps under magnum calibers and then the hammer won't go back. Go look into it. A revolver shouldn't have added weak points
It may be a "purist" issue. You find this in just about everything from guns to cars and motorcycles etc. Mostly I think it's folks just parroting what the hear on the internet. If it functions properly, fit and finish is nice and is accurate, it's all good. The "Hillary Hole" isn't a deal breaker, nor is the later 2piece barrel/shroud or MIM parts. I own many old to new Colts and Smiths, and like em all. I love shooting my old S&W Triple lock as much as my newer Colt SF-VI. Not a purist just a shooter.
I would much rather have the new model style than the old Dash 3 model from the 80's. S&W quit making that (stupid) firing pin hammer because too many people were snagging and busting off the tips of the pins, which would make the gun useless. Back in those days, a lot of orders for extra hammers were done. There is nothing wrong with MIM parts in the modern Dash 6 model, but my personal preference is S&W would go back to forged solid trigger and hammer, if for any reason to keep up with the way the 2020 Python and 2021 Aanconda are built. Give that modern Dash 6 the Jerry Miculek trigger job and spring kit and it will shoot better than the old Dash 3 one, by far.
@ You bet! The catalog also says in 1993 the dash 4 was introduced so you have one of the last dash 3’s! 😎 I have a dash 4 with a “BRF” prefix that is 1994.
I bought a few S&W in very good shape this year. All consigned, all no locks. I won't EVER buy a S&W with a lock; period. S&W 37 cheifs special, 642, 66 (4"), and 629-1 6" barrel. S&W will never see my money until they get away from that ish. Till then I'll buy what I want used or buy a new Ruger (which i plan to anyways)
I am.not confused. The 629-3 is the older gun. This particular one is a little unique because it has the unfluted cylinder and a 6 in full underlug barrel in the prelock configuration. It is known as the classic hunter and was only made at the end of the "dash 2" and beginning of the "dash" 3 era. I am aware they made some later on but a prelock 6 inch full underlug with unfluted cylinder gun is somewhat scarce. Thank you for watching.
I just can’t stand that stupid key lock , I would not buy that pistol for that reason alone , it bother me because it’s ugly and stupid , The 4 inch is beautiful
As much as I don’t like the lock and I have a model 19 from the “classics” series I’d take the lock over read instruction manual engraved on the side of the gun. That being said I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a Ruger
The new stainless models with the blued trigger and hammer just looks wrong. S&W just cheaps out everytime. And the Hillary hole has to go. If you've ever taken one apart you'd see how the lock could slip in and jam the action. MIM doesn't last as long as forged. The new ones just feel lighter and cheaply made.

👍 I purchased a 629 5”” barrel recently and the fit, finish and function are very good. I don’t like the lock but I can live with it.
Good deal. Enjoy that 629. They are awesome

The newer ones are not as high of quality as the older ones. I am sorry to hear that about your gun.

@skylordsix the old ones are alot better in my opinion
Is the newer one with the lock a round butt frame with a square butt grip? That's what I changed on my 686 3 inch, thought it looked better.
Yes, it's a round butt
The problem people have with the lock is it can engage when you do not manually lock it. Being a political move is just bad for 2a.
The political reason they did it I'd my main problem with it. I have never encountered it engaging. It is getting removed as we speak.
But they have failed. The metal is softer and warps under magnum calibers and then the hammer won't go back. Go look into it. A revolver shouldn't have added weak points

I like to hear that. I have opd and new ones also. Kudos on the SF-V1. Ill.be doing a video soon on my Magnum carry. Thanks for watching

Very good information. Thank you and thank you for watching. The newer one is getting done this week
Nice pair! “BPR”=1993 and “CHF”=2004 per S&W Standard Catalog
Thank you for the information and for watching!!!! I appreciate it

@taasch2505 I think that is an excellent decision. The older ones are made so much better. Thank you for sharing and congratulations on your purchases
I like a full underlug.
The full underkug absolutely makes that Revolver. That is why I bought it
You seem to be reversed as to which is the older gun. S&W hasn't made a M629 with out a fully straight barrel in years.

Old Colt python were great .new ones. Had issues. But Colt isa dumpster fire now. Love new and old smiths
They do not have issues. Only a few had a loose scre on the side plate. They are good revolvers
I just can’t stand that stupid key lock , I would not buy that pistol for that reason alone , it bother me because it’s ugly and stupid , The 4 inch is beautiful
It is not very pleasing to look at I agree. It is getting the lock delete kit installed next week

@Derek yeah the instructions stamped on the side is pretty bad.

I agree with you
If it is not pinned and recessed it is not a older one.
What?
@@TerryBentonHe's talking about the older models have pinned barrels and recessed cylinders
