Who knew that you could learn about CAN bus programming in a video about vanagons! Excellent descriptions.

I am glad to help connect the dots :) I find the hardest part is understanding how everything works together from a high point of view.

Funny I stumbled across this. I'm almost done with my code controlling and arduino UNO and MCP2515 module, all on a nice PCB shield with a 5v regulator and Deutsch connector so you can just give the board 12V and ground. the keypad protocol is not too bad for programming if you're a little familiar with C code. I was originally going to make a custom PCB with an MCU and CAN hardware on board but finding parts is difficult right now and you can always buy the CAN modules on Amazon for dirt cheap so I went that route, plus the open source nature of the project will end up being pretty neat. Next I plan on doing some CAN input modules for Analog and digital signals, and a CAN relay driver for controlling a relay/fuse block just via the 2 comm wires. Should be fun!

Exciting! I popped over to your channel hoping for a video... Any chance you have this shared on GitHub? Long term we are hoping to build out a mature pcb similar to your plans. We first started this and did not find anyone really doing anything similar, So its good to know you are out there.

@@DreamEV I've responded like 3 times but my comments aren't posting for some reason so this will be a short response. I have a video on my other channel (seen in the other reply) where I used a teensy to do a bunch of things including controlling the keypad but I've used arduino on this iteration and it's a bit nicer code-wise to deal with. I'll be putting the code up at some point but it'll be a few weeks since it's still in-progress.

Solid! I wanna see that Miata as well :) Don't be afraid to dive deep if/when you post a follow up, There is not much out there for this domain. Many would benefit from it.

@@DreamEV For sure! Not much of a videographer but I'll try to do some videos at some point. The miata is down long-term for a K24 swap and progress is very slow as I'm not in the best financial position to make a lot of progress just yet, but it'll get done one day!
