  • Life jackets on the Titanic were a critical part of the ship's safety equipment, though ultimately they were not enough to save many lives due to the tragic circumstances of the disaster. The life jackets on the Titanic were made of cork blocks sewn into a canvas vest. Cork was a common flotation material used at the time because of its buoyancy. The design was similar to a belt or vest that wrapped around the chest and waist, securing with ties or straps.
The Titanic was equipped with enough life jackets for every passenger and crew member on board, in compliance with maritime safety regulations of the time. Life jackets were stored in passengers' cabins and in crew quarters, as well as in strategic locations around the ship. As the Titanic was sinking, crew members instructed passengers to put on their life jackets. This was part of the emergency procedures practiced during the voyage. Despite the availability of life jackets, the chaotic and panicked conditions on board made it difficult for some passengers to retrieve and properly don their life jackets.
While life jackets helped keep many passengers afloat after the ship sank, the frigid waters of the North Atlantic led to hypothermia, which was a major cause of death for those in the water. The primary issue was the insufficient number of lifeboats. Many passengers ended up in the water because there were not enough lifeboats to accommodate everyone.
The tragedy of the Titanic highlighted the need for better safety measures, including more effective life jackets and sufficient lifeboat capacity. This led to significant changes in maritime safety regulations, such as those introduced by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) in 1914. The life jackets on the Titanic, while standard for the time, were ultimately inadequate in the face of such a large-scale disaster. The lessons learned from this tragedy have greatly influenced modern maritime safety standards.
