You could glue a magnet to the bottom of the jar and another at the back of the crate. That would give them a bit of resistance to falling out. Just my opinion.
Heavy D - Absolutely Awsome idea, I never thought of that, they even make magnets that come in rolls that you can cut with scissors, brilliant, thanks for sharing that. 👍👍👍
This has been most helpful to me. In addition to you sharing your passion for our hobby of pipes and tobaccos, you offer suggestions to enhance our enjoyment. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and sharing your knowledge with us. Your videos are always instructive. Jim Dennis
What an awesome idea... As some others have stated... (unfortunately I am new to pipe smoking and have recently found chris' channel and it's my favorite) I wish him well w his life and family and hope he returns. Muttnchop... And every other father out there.... Happy Father's day and happy piping!
Makes you think life was easier for those old time pipers that found one blend they liked and smoked it all their lives! All they needed was somewhere to put one jar.Great vid as always.
Not sure if the Michaels crate is still available, but I bought a 1950’s soda crate that was from Coke Cola. It has the same size slots as this 24 jar crate, but has only 12 slots. It’s super heavy duty and beautifully aged. I’m still searching for this crate you display here.
All my nearby Michaels are saying out of stock online and also not available on the website. I may still pay a visit to my local store to see if that’s truly the case. Not sure if anyone else experienced the same thing...
This is way cool! Thanks for sharing this. Btw, I go out under my Willow tree to smoke my pipe. At least twice a week I sit out there escaping the word under my tree and watch your videos. Thanks for the time you put it, I have learned a lot from you!
Muttnchop! I just got mine tonight. It was on clearance in the store for under $4. They couldn't find it when I went to the store last night, so I had to order it to the store online (same-day) for around $15, then go back tonight to pick it up. The Michael's associate returned it so I could get my $15 back, then re-sold it to me for under four dollars. You're a hero, man.
Bresden - That’s Awsome, you will love this thing. I think I told everyone the wrong size jar, I think it’s supposed to 1/2 pint, and I might have said pint, sorry for the confusion. 👍👍👍
Bought two of these and it was the best thing I could have done! This, along with your labeling video and I feel so organized! Not to mention it's so much easier to find the tobacco I want. Thanks! Always enjoy your videos! Best Wishes!
Making Pipes - I'm glad, you should have seen me in Michael's when I discovered them, I looked at it and said, I wonder if small canning jars will fit, they sold the size of canning jar I thought would fit, so I went over to the isle were they were, picked one up, set it into one of the slots, and yelled ALL RIGHT!!!, then I was looked at like I was crazy, but I didn't care. 👍👍👍
I'm in Michael's now and looking at the soda crate # you gave and pint jars don't come close to fitting, but jelly jar ball quilted 8 oz jars do fit perfectly.
Hey Muttnchop-I just ordered mine online and used the 50% off coupon available at the Michaels website, shipping to the local store. Thank you so much for the heads-up on a great deal!
Ren - You bet it is, I think I reported to use pint size jars, I was mistaken, it’s 1/2 pint, just look when you go buy the canning jars you will know the ones to get. 👍👍👍
A sure space friendly solution to one who has more than few tins open and in constant rotation, fine, I would think one may find thesealike alternatives here in europe too, although I didn't seen them anywhere so far, nevertheless I think they are somewhere out there. Thanks Chris, Paul
Your right on about choosing a new pipe. I first see what impresses me and then I put it through the paces so to speak, like you did. Also if I get to the place I want the feel of it in my mouth and they don't provide sleeves for that. I do not buy from them at all.
Just purchased this, thanks Muttnchop for the idea! Also for anyone interested right now there is a 40 percent off coupon so I got this for less than $9!
I saw Michaels had a 50% off coupon so I went and picked up one of these on the cheap. Thanks for the tip. I have my stuff so much more organized now. Peace!
paulie pipes - you're welcome Paulie, I made an error in my video saying that pint size jars fit the holes when in fact it's actually 1/2 pint jars, sorry about the confusion. 👍👍👍
I picked up one of these (thanks to your recommendation) and I love it! I actually modified it by removing some pieces toward the bottom so that my pipes fit in standing upright! It’s really cool. I wish I could post a photo to show you, but I can’t do that on a TH-cam comment. Thanks for the recommendation! You have helped so much. I am just over a year into my pipe smoking journey, and I owe so much to you mutton chop!
Fantastic adaptation Chris! They should call them "cellaring crates," but then they would immediately increase in price to $26, and then eventually become illegal.
OFP88 yes it would be great for apartments, and yes I have a video explaining how I make the lid labels it's called " How I create my ball jar lid labels (stickers). 😃😃😃
Would you be able to provide a item number? The one Muttonchop provided doesn't seem to work, neither does putting 24 slot soda case in the search engine at Michaels.com provide any usefull info. Thanks in advance.
I tried this for myself. Not sure what style of pint-sized jars you have, but my pint-sized Ball brand mason jars were a bit too big. Couldn't get them to fit. Oh well. Maybe I'll find something else.
No worries my man. I lucked out and tried it at the store first. No wasted money. Lol. Keep up the good work on your videos. Informative and entertaining. 👍🏻
will that take the more squared off ball jar. its a half pint also but 4" around, a bit wider than the standard ball jar. I like the wider mouth on these.
Either Michael’s changed their specs on this or the fine folks who produce Ball Jars slightly widened their pint size jars: I just can’t seem to make this work for me. Many thanks for this video MCP! You’re the best 🖖
@@MrGio95 In my personal folder, there are sizes for small and large mouth jars. Just simply shape format, shape fill, and make sure the fill is "picture", which you can use any image you want to fill it with. Just print on sticker paper. If you figure out how your printer orients the print, you can delete the circles per print to just the ones you want, and reuse the sticker paper until it's gone. Here's the link to the templates: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Gmj4q8VETWlfR1_F3KKZMRuIn_XIfTL8?usp=sharing They may look a bit wonky spacing wise, but if you download them as .doc files, then that is automatically corrected.
How do you create the labels? I apologize for this question as I’m sure you’ve replied to it many times before Good sir! Thanks for your time and effort. I’m brand new to your club
heyyy Muttnchop Piper Chris this is a great idea I'm definitely going to get me one or two lol thanks for the information happy smoking my friend ☺☺☺☺💨💨💨💨 best regards Peter
I don't intend to be rude, but those jars look suspiciously like 0.5 pint jars. I store tobacco in the wide mouth pint jars and they fit 100g very well. Just something to lookout for in case people already have a collection of pint jars, they may not fit. But, I may be wrong!
If you order at Michaels website make sure to use the 50% off one item coupon they have every week. This week's current code "50save91017t" is good until 9/16/17 for instance.
First off, let me apologize for the forthcoming question. How did you get the labels off the tins so nicely? I'm sitting here playing with a few and next to cutting them out I can't seem to grasp it. Thanks in advance.
PSA: The jars that fit are actually HALF-PINT sized. I know Muttnchop Piper said pint size in the video. But he has stated in other comments that they are indeed half-pint and I can personally attest to this. Excellent idea, Muttnchop Piper! TYVM for sharing!
+Muttnchop Piper Everyone is entitled to a mistake every now and then. ESPECIALLY with all the knowledge that you have given myself as well as my girlfriend. As new pipe smokers you are basically our "Pipes for Dummies" book. Thank you for all that you do and keep up the good work, sir! I have also heard that you were in the Marine Corps. Thank you for your service!
Well but, wait, aren't the tins the tobacco comes in airtight? I've always kept my tobacco in its tin for storage, now once I pop the seal on the tin, Then it goes into the ball/mason jar.
The Lowmein - that's correct, if your primary purpose for buying tin tobacco is to cellar it, and pop one tin at a time and you don't pop another tin until that one is gone, then you are doing it correctly. But for us that have a rotation, or who like smoking a lot of different blends, and you have popped a lot of tins to sample, that's when you put it in the Mason Jar and place it in this cabinet. 👍👍👍
I've been looking for something like that. I have just been keeping them in the original box I just can't get the labels off and looking good like that.
Muttnchop!!!.. first let me say that I had no doubt that that was the chop behind that soda crate... next I want to say You must have been talking about me I don't have the Arts and Crafts skill so this is a dream come true for me now as president of the muttnchop fan club I will go to the Michaels right down the street from my house and I will show this to them and say that I was sent here by the chop for this... I figure they will direct me right to it in fact they should give you some credit for this item because it's going to fly off the shelves now I think I will suggest that they changed the name of it too the muttnchop rack.... well they're probably going to look at me like I have two heads but that's okay they'll find out later what they were missing out on thanks brother really appreciate this one take care my friend
Pipes And kayaks - just be advised, the smaller stores may not carry this item, so just have them order as many as you need and either ship them to your house, or to the store for pick up. As always, you are welcome my friend. 👍👍👍
Howdy, went to Michaels.com and did a search for "24 slot soda crate" and only got a 24 slot key-chain holder and a 24 slot pencil case. Tried typing in the item number you provided "280266" and got nothing... Can/would you check on the item number please? I have a 2 hour drive to Michael's from where I live. Love the idea!
Awesome. I picked up a case of 1 pint Ball jars with the intent of storing like you do, but now that I see this I might have to grab the half pints and use this for a shelf. Easier than trying to make one for the 1pint jars!
Anthony Decker - I did tell you the wrong size of jar to get for this box, I think I said get pint size when I actually meant 1/2 pint size, sorry about that. 👍👍👍
Hey Muttenchop, I just wanted to make sure what size jars that you're using? I ordered 2 of these from Michael's but when I tried to put my jars in them the slots were too small. I tried pint size jars with regular and wide mouth but neither fit.
fgreen04 1/2 pint Ball jars, I think, I said pint sized, and I apologize that I misled you, if you purchased pint sized ball jars I hope you can return them for the 1/2 pint size. 😏😏😏
sk4lman - if you live in the U.S. most national chain grocery stores carry them, you can get them on line from Amazon, and some hobby stores carry them, if you live outside the U.S. I’m not sure. I made a mistake telling you to purchase pint size jars, in reality it’s 1/2 pint size, sorry for the mistake. 👍👍👍
Muttnchop Piper re-looking at the vid, I have Mason jars that look to be shorter and fatter. I'm going to see if I can find taller and rounder ones. The slots are around 2.75x2.75, maybe a little bigger. According to my wife, when watching the video, ot looks same size as mine.
Well, problem solved, sir. I bought a 12 pack of 1/2 pint ball jars and they fit PERFECTLY. I wasn’t aware mason jars were different than these. Now I just need to print labels and hang on my wall. Thank you for the idea, Sir. They are still 13.00, but with a coupon, less than 8.
The Jars Muttnchop is showing are not pint jars, but likely 1/2 pint jars. The inside dimensions on my crate is 2 7/8" square and 2 3/4" deep. My pint Ball jars are too big in diameter to fit, so be sure that your jars will fit inside the 2 7/8" dimension.
The downside is that it's a fixed size. I made one out of foam-core like you did for my pints. Turns out its the same slot dimensions but it looks a tad to thick for my shelf. Excellent find though. The jars are great for tin tobacco. One tin fills the jar pretty good and works very well. Might actually pick one of these up because I ran out of room in the one I made. PS - If anyone has some of the tobacco I do and want a custom label for the jar, check out my Imgur for some ready to print files. Made for pint jars and the larger wide mouth mason jars by Kerr. imgur.com/a/if3f3

Did yours fit the pint or half pint jars.... My pints won't quite fit... But I'm thinking the half pints will
@@jerodjmoore No, Mine didn't fit either. I haven't tried smaller jars yet.
Must be half pint... I bought two crates and a bunch of new jars... Lol.... I'll use em.... Now I have an excuse to get more tobacco

Ernesto Londero - I did a video on how I make those, the video is titled " How I create my ball canning jar labels (stickers)". 👍👍👍
Thanks!!!
So it's for 1/2 pint? Will a half pint fit 2 ounces of tobacco??
Drew Bags - yes, you have to push it in tight, but it will fit. 👍👍👍
Awesome. I picked up a case of 1 pint Ball jars with the intent of storing like you do, but now that I see this I might have to grab the half pints and use this for a shelf. Easier than trying to make one for the 1pint jars!
Hey guys,
The crate at Michael's is smaller now. There is a larger one that fits the pint size jars, but it is $50! Very frustrating...
Hah, isn't that the truth!
Now, how do you get the tin sticker on the jar lid ?
Exactly my question. How do you do it? Please answer this one.
thanks bud, just got one of these at half off. Now I gotta find your sticker vid. : )
Pipeterian - You are welcome my friend. 👍👍👍
I'm a but confused as to which type of jars fits best. Are they the 8oz jars? Regular mouth or wide mouth? Thank you!
Anthony Decker - I did tell you the wrong size of jar to get for this box, I think I said get pint size when I actually meant 1/2 pint size, sorry about that. 👍👍👍
8 years later of course yet another great discontinued product.
No worries I have all pint size jars before I saw it, I can always return it if I decide to stick with pints lol Thanks!
Where can you get these jars, is the next question? :o
sk4lman - if you live in the U.S. most national chain grocery stores carry them, you can get them on line from Amazon, and some hobby stores carry them, if you live outside the U.S. I’m not sure. I made a mistake telling you to purchase pint size jars, in reality it’s 1/2 pint size, sorry for the mistake. 👍👍👍
Where do u get the labels for the tops of the jar lids.
nabsr I created them myself, I have done a video on how I made them, the name of the video is " How I created my ball jar lid labels (stickers). 👍👍👍
Thanks found it. Keep up the great work
There isn't a muttnchop video I haven't liked 👍
Excellent find my friend! Just might have to take a trip to Michael's and pick up one or two 😎
Upon AstariKnight - Thank you my friend. 😃😃😃
Oh man you just saved me hours of "crafting". Just ordered this. Do you know the exact jar that fits?
monty spine it's the half pint jars
thank you very much
monty spine no problem, I noticed he said the wrong size I the video.
Cool item you found there. Was wondering, how did you do your labels for the jars?
Shawn Brown - I did a video on that called how I create my canning lid labels, stickers. 👍👍👍
I just got one. I store my tobacco in 1/2 pint jars, but the jars are a little too big/the slots are too small.
Michael Albanese III - that’s odd, mine fit, either you got a defective one, or they redesigned the box with smaller holes.
Michael Albanese III - That’s interesting, mabye ball jars are longer and thinner then other makers jars, well anyway, I’m glad it worked out. 👍👍👍
They actually are. The masons are short and chubby.
Is it 4 3/4" deep?
awwwweeeeesssoooommmeeee!
Show Bizo - thhhhhhhhhhhhank yoooooooooou. 😃😃😃
Any chance you could measure the pieces of wood involved?
They don't ship to UK
This just fills me with lust.
Micheals Crates are no longer available anywhere.
I was wrong. Kept trying and ordered several from Michaels. Will absolutely know when they arrive!

Maximus Thalos cool my friend, your foam core box looks great. 😃😃😃
The correct size...8oz...jars.
Jake Sleagans - Cool, thanks for the clarification. 👍👍👍
Where’s muttnchop
It‘s around 11€
13 dollar is more like ten or eleven euro.
Ruben Scheer you're right, my apologies, I went the wrong way in my calculations. Thanks for the correction. 👍👍👍
Sold!!!!!
