      Get one trad published for social proof and then self publish the rest. Also people want publishing house book deal bookstores due to lazy and wishful thinking.

      You might enjoy talking with Derek Murphy. He does fiction.
      Analytical writing is very different from writing fiction are very different.
      There are things I might enjoy reading but would not / cannot write.

      @@nicolascole77 I’m happy to share! I’ll often watch these with my phone locked as a background podcast, and I know I’m missing some valuable insights so I’ll play through it again and pick up on some new ideas.
      But you also pack these with so much value, I’ll also re-listen to episodes when I can focus more just to really let the ideas sink in.
      In this case, I’ve recently latched on to the idea of writing a book but am a long way off. I’ve only recently started taking online writing seriously, and am working toward starting a newsletter. This episode helped give me a path from there to a self-published book!
      Thanks again and hopefully this is helpful input 😊

    23:50 - This section reminds me of Kohei Horikoshi. He's a manga artist and writer, and he started out with a small series "Barrage" that got cancelled pretty early. He then started another series named "Oumagadoki Zoo" which also got cancelled, though it had a longer run. (I think Barrage was second, though.)
    He was about to give up on his dream when he got encouraged to try one more time.
    The third series was "My Hero Academia."
    It ran for 10 years in Weekly Shonen Jump, and just ended this past August. It spawned an anime, four movies (so far), several Japanese musicals, and a ton of spin-off books, novels, and fan materials. The manga volumes have sold over 100 million volumes around the world.
    I see the parallels from what you described here with Horikoshi's story. I'll definitely keep it in mind.

    Love the idea of self-publishing some non-fiction!
    I can’t understand the obsession with gatekeepers and traditional infrastructures that most people have.
    In a world that’s getting more democratized each day people are still seeking permission and validation.
    Great video!

    Hey Nicolas
    I’m curious - I am writing a book on education… basically a book for teachers. Would publishing with an education publisher also follow these rules that you’re describing? My concern is that I won’t sell any copies of my science education book on my own…

      If you can get a publisher to publish this type of book, go for it. But if you can't, then you have to question whether creating, publishing, marketing, etc., is going to be worth the effort.
      We (my wife and I) have written and self-published several language books (to learn Thai) and they're more a labour of love than anything else. The catalyst for this was I was learning Thai myself and the available materials at the time were pretty poor; so, I came up with my own system to help me learn, and then we decided to write and self-publish to help others.
      They're a lot of work (and I'm currently updating the books, which is also a whole lot of work again), but again, it's around why you're doing it.
      For my wife, who's an English teacher, they're great for her profile and career, etc., so there's that aspect to it, but it's a good job we're not doing it for the royalties. :D
      If you want to have a look at what we've done, here's the books, etc., on my wife's website: www.teachercrowley.com/quest

    • @zedkuchalo
      @zedkuchalo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Microsoft Word, then copy into Google Docs to help spell and grammar check plus track changes.
      Reedsy also has a good editor which formats your book, helps you set writing goals and track changes & how many words you write each day.

    And we've also recently found out that authors/publishers buy back large amounts of their books from retailers that they know from part of the statistics for the Sunday Times list (in the UK). No wonder so many writers are poor.

    Do you really need an editor after all the spelling and grammar is checked??

    • @raksh9
      @raksh9 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Spelling and grammar are only a part of the editing process. An editor can check for consistency of tone, economy of sentence structure, suggest structural changes of the entire work, and much more. A good editor can do this without changing the original voice of the author, or in the case of a collaborative work, significantly upgrade the author's output. An editor can suggest additions to content, or query passages that aren't clear. An author can be 'too close' to their work to see issues that a watchful third party can identify.
