  • This fire was in Rogue River Oregon, right across the street from my Mom's house. I drove up on it when going to visit her right as it started. the tent trailer out front was on fire first then the propane tank vented a fireball into the garage. Has to be the worst and scariest sound I have ever heard. Everyone made it out of the house, but it was a total loss. Be safe out there.
    Listen... Getting tired of all the hate about videoing instead of calling 911. My Mom was on the phone with them right next to me so I didn't feel it necessary. Yes I shot the video, I wanted to document it in case it jumped to my Moms house, and maybe help the investigation. In a stressful situation what would you do? Yeah it's easy to say you would do this, you would do that... You weren't there. It was the most horrific thing I have ever witnessed. Before you scream why aren't you helping?? Well as I said in my comments below, I ran to the house to check if anyone was inside... It was too friggin hot to do much of anything. I am not a firefighter... After I turned around the friggin propane tank went and thats when I started recording. So please keep your negative comments to yourself. Thank you.

    Please please listen. Valuable lesson to learn here. If you’re ever in a situation where your home/building you’re in if you can do so safely close doors on your way out of the building. This closes off oxygen to the fire and can actually help to keep the fire very small. Has been shown to actually save more of the structure and help responders put out the flame faster. Really sad to see this happen but really glad everyone is safe.

    • @jaheim24k

      that not safe because fire can spread fast

    • @hesatwitchyone
      @hesatwitchyone 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      That's his point, and a good one. Fire won't spread as fast if the door is closed...when you exit the house, close the door if its safe to. Then the fire department can open it when nessseaary and they have water to the door already or are close.

    • @coledavey3999
      @coledavey3999 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @FireCrew 57 And as a firefighter myself I can say it is true, flow path increases oxygen to the source of the fire. Take away or reduce flow paths and you start to narrow one side of the fire tetrahedron making it difficult for the fire to continue combustion or spread. I don’t know what they taught you in the academy but oxygen is needed for fire to grow and spread. Decrease or remove oxygen from the equation and it no longer can burn.

    Looks like they did things right, this was time to establish a water supply and deploy the 2 1/2 inch line. Looks like there is a hose issue at the driveway, vertical fanning stream. Biggest issue was the air movement to the left, the "bravo side" of the involved structure, and the proximity to the next house on the left.
    Some may scream "deck gun", but getting a handline onto the exposure, right next to the main body of fire, was paramount.
    There were four firefighters on the apparatus, so once water is established, manning the deck gun was a possibility. Handy appliance, but I can tell you from experience, the deck gun requires training. It flows A LOT of water, and especially if you are running "tank to pump", you have mere minutes of supply.
    Getting a handline between the fire and the exposure was the primary objective here.
    By the way, that whining sound you hear is the emergency vent on a propane tank. It's designed to do this, to keep the pressure in check on a tank. In a firefight, you have to throw some water on that tank to keep it cool...if you can.
    I was watching the evolution, and the color of the smoke. Plenty of fuel right there, and an aggressive fire indeed. The home was a loss, done deal. The objective was to reduce the volume of fire at the exposure. Shame the video stops short of the results.
    With my crew, former captain, I had them play with the equipment. Very important. My guys knew how to properly deploy a master stream, and use the deck gun if needed. But, we had the luxury of being able to do so. Our primary mission was jumping from helicopters, but in structures, my crew was dispatched automatically on the second alarm. Thus, I had to qualify them on structural response as well as wildland, both for truck and engine duties.

      What I saw from experience is a very slow deployment of their 1.5 live line, they didn't complete the pull off the truck for minutes, then charge it and cover the house to the left. Then an even slower move to get the 2.5 to the hydrant. Took a line to the back that burst. Looked like a poorly trained volunteer response to me. I worked for a volunteer station, first two or three at least got the truck to the scene, a couple more would arrive straight there, we'd pull the live line and get water on it in less than 30 seconds, we'd go straight to the hydrant immediately because like you said, we had about 3-4 minutes of a 1.5 worth of water on the truck. To me this looked like a Keystone FD.

      What is it with you blowhards trying to pretend like you have the faintest clue what you are talking about? Especially when the video itself refutes everything you are saying! They were putting water on the exposure less than 90 seconds after the brakes were set. Pretty much everything else you said is blowhard puffing.

    • @JB91710
      @JB91710 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The deck Gun using tank water would have knocked this down in around 40 seconds after they stopped. they did Not lay In a hydrant line, they didn't it manually long afterwards. That was not a clever "Fanning System, if was a punctured hose due to lack of maintenance.
      The Deck Gun could have wet down everything before they could untangle a hand line and get fully dressed.
      The Deck Gun should be the number one tool for Visible Burning material with a Booster line OR correct length 1-3/4" line should be second. USA departments don't know what Correct length means or how to store it and pull it out so if doesn't tangle. That takes the ability to Think which pretty much doesn't exist here either. It does require practice and a spotter which nobody bothers to use.
      Water on the burning material is Always the objective at every fire. No threat means no need for protection or quick rescue. Makes it safer for the victims and the heroes searching for them.
      You got the propane one right.
      The home was Not a loss and firefighters don't get to allow that kind of thinking into their minds. They are there to stop the threat and help victims, in that order is best.

    I'm a firm believer that's this day in age with the population in smaller cities increasing there should be no such thing as a volunteer fire department. These men and women should be paid and staffed to respond to the needs on the areas they serve. The government spends and allocates so much money to "miscellaneous" causes this should be on of the main pushes to prevent situations like this from happening. A small city or town should receive the same quality fire and ems as a big city!!

    Looks like a rural town which means fire response is limited. I live in the suburbs of a major city and most are volunteer firefighters but the equipment my area has looks better and more modern then many of the paid city departments and fires like this the local towns respond fairly quickly with a huge mutual aid which includes standby (backfill) at towns firehouses that are working at the fire. You have to really admire volunteer fireman who drop what they are doing to put your fires out for free. I always prepare for the worst. I have fire extinguishers all over the house and one in each vehicle i have. You can never be over prepared.

This video really gutted me😢 Thank god everyone was safe in this case of this video. Not everyone is so lucky. I volunteer with the red cross now installing smoke detectors and helping people make escape plans. Nobody ever thinks it will happen to them. Be prepared. Practice your escape plans with your children. Make it fun, time them have a designated meet up spot. It only takes 2 minutes for toxic smoke to kill you. If you are asleep with no smoke detectors you may die without even waking up. Know your exit possibilites. Going down stairs to an exit could cost you your life if the fire is burning below the stairs. Physically practice going out that window. Be safe. John and Aria were 43 and 7 years old and shouldve been going to school and work the next day just like any other day. Now they are memories. Be safe.

    Doug Christen: First let me say the video is good it caught the most essential information for all to see. As for your comment about those hating because the one person videoing isn't calling 911 you raised an excellent point there was already someone calling 911 who you knew and the decision not to call did not hurt anything. I have commented about blind commentary in the past and this is exactly what I was referring to. People need to chill out and stop hating on videographers they may have another person calling or have already called themselves. Firefighters these are the professionals. They have undergone many hours of training and teaching. People squawk about what they see and do not go beyond that to think that if the point of view is from alpha side then there is no information showing about what is happening on the charlie side. Another phrase for blind commentary is making assumptions.

    I just read that the occupants delayed calling 9-1-1 for almost 15 minutes, while they attempted to extinguish the fire themselves. Folks, don't do that! Even if you have an extinguisher, even if you think it's small enough to put out yourself, CALL 9-1-1- FIRST!.

    I grew up rural. I got caught playing with matches, dad read me the riot act like it was world war 3. If you catch fire, you are on your own. This is obviously and understaffed department, there would be at least 2 more trucks if they were properly staffed. That shriek is the pressure relief on a propane tank, that opened up and that is the stick a fork in it moment. We had neighbors who lost barns and managed to save their house simply by turning on the "fire sprinklers" that they had because of forest fires. The small towns have it the worst because a neighbors fire can turn into your fire or the wholr block's fire very quickly. Especially when the fire department is only able to slow or stop the spread at best. Personal tradgedy for the hoimeowners, gaily grind for the firefighters if they are regulars.

    Wow,,this is a terrible fire, I pray everyone in the home got out safely & all involved was ok? I will say though, as a volunteer firefighter in New York for 23 years, idk how things get done in other states, but Oregon needs to step up there response!? There Engine pulled up to the scene at 5:18, & water wasn't put onto the house until 8:46 into the video!? That is unbelievable, the minute the Engine was there, they should've pulled an attack line off, & gotten water onto the house within a minute! There is probably 500- 750 gallons of water in the tank, that could've been used! The other question, how is there only 1 unit putting this fire out! I know during the day, it's hard to get response, especially in a volunteer department, when your membership is at work, but, that's why you call for help!!

    • @virgilhilts3924
      @virgilhilts3924 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for confirming you have ZERO experience as a firefighter 🤣
      Lets break this down...
      "There Engine pulled up to the scene at 5:18"
      -NFPA 1710 recommend a 90% response goal of 5:20 seconds for first in
      "water wasn't put onto the house until 8:46 into the video!?"
      -The first pre-connect was pulled and putting water on the exposure ~90 seconds after the brakes were set
      -The second pre-connect was pulled and in use ~90 seconds after that
      -The third pre-connect was in use and the hydrant supply charged within 5 minutes of the brakes being set
      "the minute the Engine was there, they should've pulled an attack line off, & gotten water onto the house within a minute!"
      -Using exclamation points doesn't make your comments any less ridiculous
      "There is probably 500- 750 gallons of water in the tank, that could've been used!"
      -It was being used by the first two pre-connects (exclamation point)
      "The other question, how is there only 1 unit putting this fire out!"
      -Because 20+ ton fire apparatus cannot magically teleport across miles of roadway (exclamation point)
      "especially in a volunteer department"
      -This wasnt a VFD
      "that's why you call for help!!"
      -Calling doesn't make equipment move any faster down the road (double exclamation point)

      @@virgilhilts3924 well, idk about you, but thanks for breaking down the formulas of firefighting for me. Not sure how they do things in this department, & im not sure where your located? However, I slept 23 years as a Volunteer in New York on Long Island, worked with alot of guys in my Department who were also city guys in the FDNY, & one thing I know, especially for a paid department, which your claiming it is, that's fine. I'd like to know then, where is the second engine, where is the truck, ambulance, RIT unit?? I know every department does things differently, & I know this was a total loss, heavy volume of fire when these guys pulled up, & God bless them & keep them safe. We're just used to going for the throat here?

      "I slept 23 years as a Volunteer in New York on Long Island"
      -So you claim... yet you had no clue what was going on here
      -Including the fact that I refuted (supported by the video) each and every one of your false assertions
      "where is the second engine, where is the truck, ambulance, RIT unit??"
      -Again, you do know that 20+ ton apparatus cannot magically teleport... don't you?
      -You do know that the vast majority of the US is NOT a congested "metro" area?
      -Do you even have a clue how massive and spread out this nation is?

      I agree with you until you ask the question of if your house caught fire would you want this guy to make a documentary about it while actively ignoring your kid's pain, or would you want anyone else on the planet to be there as they would be more productive? I think calling someone out for literally failing to do anything productive is not being hateful. Let's test the logic they used, so if his mom's house caught fire as a result of this incident would the insurance require video evidence from start to absolute resolution of the incident to honor an insurance policy? No, clearly they don't and that is not how any of this works. He just needs to own up to the fact that it was not his best moment as a human and make a statement he would do better if ever in that situation again. I could respect that. Just being honest.

    I make 2 minutes till water reaches the first nozzle. Now that sounds a long time but in US firefighting terms that is pretty good. The US fire services for some strange reason only fight fires with large bore mainline hose already connected in flaked multiple lengths. Those take time to lay out, remove the kinks and then charge. Charging all that hose wastes valuable tank water. In the UK and Europe our main line hose remains in separate rolled lengths in each side locker but near to the pump deliveries are at least two smaller 45mm hoselines already connected to the pump in horizontal flakes. All you do is grab the already attached nozzle and run to the fire. A good pump operator is already charging the hose as you drag it and water will hit a fire usually within 15 second. Less if you use the fixed hose reels on each side. There would have been one small jet and two hose reels on that fire within 20 seconds. It's not the firefighters fault, they work with what they are given. We in Europe just cannot understand why the US still build systems with such an inefficient design though some authorities have adopted European tactics and designs. Most fires can be put out quickly in the early stages with such tactics but if not, then at least your water is working for you until you get your main lines out which are rolled out far quicker than that flaked hose and you roll out and charge only what you need. It's quicker, less kinks, less water waste. Not a lot you can do about attendance times and take absolutely no notice of a couple of idiots on here who claim to be volunteer firefighters, they are talking utter rubbish as many real volunteers have stated. Attendance times depend on availability of crew, time to attend the station (the whole crew) and distance from the incident. Even then they may be attending another fire and you have to wait for a fire appliance from much further away. You just cannot have an infinite number of appliances and men as they cost money. It's the price you pay for living in a rural hamlet. Many residents associations make their own arrangements for first aid firefighting using portable pumps either gas or electric and local water supplies such as swimming pools, ponds and streams as well as fire hydrants. You may not be trained firefighters and should never enter a burning building without proper training and equipment but you can protect the buildings either side or in this case extinguish the fire in the drive before the houses became involved. There is always something you can do with the right preplanning and equipment but do it safely. Talk to your local fire dept for advice. They will be only too willing to help.
    PS I cannot fault the firefighting tactics. That property was a 100% loss on arrival so the crew used their limited manpower wisely to protect the adjacent properties. Ignore any negative comments about firefighting lack of backup. Tactics 100% correct in the circumstances and backup will already have been mobilised but they have even further to travel even IF they weren't already out at another incident.
