I've been starting to have doubts about Monstercat Instinct ever since this morning. I was browsing spotify looking for some new and funky tracks to work out to.
Long story short, I came came across this amazing song called RED by Beauz. (Long norong version for anyone who cares: I actually spent almost 2 hrs trying to find new genres that might fit my taste to create a playlisti could enjoy. After describing a complex list of nonsesne search terms, I found something new that seemed promising called 'Melbourne Bounce.' Weird name but all of these new genres have them lol. I search Spotify, and hit play on one of the first results ((called something generic like Melbourne Bounce playlist)), not expecting anything special after such a long disappointing search. And first song in the playlist is this song, RED by Beauz. My first reaction was relief at finally finding something that just seemed to hit all my buttons.)
Even though my taste is really specific, the song just put me in this otherworldly mood that I couldn't describe. I knew I definitely had to smoke a bowl to this at least once lol. I was excited to look them up and find out more about their music.
This is when things got kind of weird for me. It is hard to find many search results, official songs, music videos, or really anything about this group. Losing hope, I finally decided to Google the channel that posted the song, Monstercat Instinct. I notice some odd things immediately. Every artist from the label never had their own personal channels for hosting their music videos, allowing them to attain individual views and comments. I do know this happens with smaller labels, but after giving some of the other artists from this label a listen liking what I heard, I felt they could be boosting their profits tenfold by doing so.
When I dug more, I found out that the label had disbanded at some point so that kind of answered the question of why I couldn't find much. But then I see the song Red came out in just 2022. Wouldn't they have just been poached by another label? It was obviously good music, so why did the label fizzling out mean that they had barely any online presence?Just because they had left the label, did that mean they weren't going to make any more music?
After traveling even deeper into the obscure, low- engagement underground Reddit rabbit hole, I heard tell a redditor explain that now, for a price, all of monstercat's artists' music could be purchased -for official remix, personal use, sampling, or really what fucking ever the person wants. After researching his claims I found that, not only was he right, but that it is very inexpensive and is in no way marketed as in official exclusive purchasing of music rights from a label or artist, more like one of those generic three-star premium memberships you find on every site that anyone with a few bucks and a pulse could buy. this membership allows any of Monstercat Instincts' previous artists work to be used in any way, even in cases where profit was being made with no royalties given to the artists.
This made me very angry. Not only were these great artists not getting any recognition online, now they were left with a label who abandoned them but kept the rights to all of their achievements so they never COULD get the recognition they deserve? I wonder what kind of unsavory contracts these poor singers and bands were coerced to sign in order for Monstercat to get away with this.
Considering I learned all this in a day and didn't find much, it's possible that I am misunderstanding the situation. Maybe it wasn't sus that I had never heard of them before. Just because I like the songs doesn't mean everyone will or that they'll break the billboard 100. There's still a lot of sus things that I can't account for, but truly there is only so much information I have.
Anyone still listening to this/ interested in these rtists know anything? I'd love to be able to pick someone's brain about it
