  • Space:1999 almost had an episode that would've given some kind of closure to the story of the show - but this was soon halted by Fred Freiberger.

OK I might be getting old, however, when the Space:1999 email list was the only way us Alphans communicated back in the day (late 90s through early 2Ks) and Johnny Byrne was a regular contributor, I swear he did upload a copy of the script. If someone somewhere has the mailing list archived, there may be hidden treasure.....

Don't forget that when production on S2 finished, pre-production prep for season 3 was under way during the hiatus, and was finally cancelled at late stage. IIRC, the funds were snatched to allow Lew Grade to go into film production - of which the most memorable (for all the wrong reasons) was "Raise the Titanic!"

    • @hopebgood

I wonder whether the inspiration for 'Children of the Gods' was Arra's speech in 'Collision Course':

cool idea, too bad Fred had to do his Fred-thing. O_o honestly, I always wanted to see Alpha return to Earth. Like- they reach a point where they have to put everyone in stasis (ala Captain Zantor's stasis boxes) because they've finally run out of supplies.. then the Moon passes thru a spacewarp, or they encounter the black sun again and - they wake up finding themselves back in Earth orbit, hundreds or thousands of years later.. and it's unpopulated, green, the cities overgrown, and they finally realize the purpose of their survival- to repopulate the planet- but a little wiser, a little more carefully. -something like that ^_^

This sounds like a perfect season 1 episode and a great way of ending the show, such a pity it never got made. I mean ultimately you knew the Alphans would succeed as with most time travel related stories if they'd failed the children wouldn't have been around to be taken in the first place to test the Alphans, so the fact that they were available shows that the test successful and ...oh I've now got a headache...either way it sounds brilliant to me.

  • @evildrganymede
    @evildrganymede ปีที่แล้ว +14

And strangely enough those two Johnny Byrne stories that were produced are IMO the most watchable of the second season - as in, they're the only episodes I can take even vaguely seriously (the Immunity Syndrome not only shares a name with a Star Trek TOS episode but I think it also feels like it could have fit into TOS). The Children of the Gods definitely sounds a lot more like a first season episode than a second season one though.

Well that's 1999 Season 2 alright - mental and physical torture with no clear purpose! I think Time Lash was a great candidate to wrap up UFO. The aliens try one last scheme to defeat SHADO, they fail, but leave Straker a hollow shell.

None of Gerry Anderson’s shows had a final episode that wrapped up the storylines. We never know if Spectrum won the “war of nerves” with the Mysterons, or if SHADO stopped the alien invasion. We don’t know if Fireball XL5 is still out exploring the galaxy. And we never found out if the Alphans found a new planet, but it was at least implied that they did in the episode “Collision Course.”

Turns out Johnny wrote more than that: not just a finale after CHILDREN but a whole idea that might be a new series: Alphans settled down on a planet but the Moon leaves and returns; some want to leave; some do not; some do and find a MUF on the base and I believe it takes off again into space. In the meantime, I believe BLAM also had an idea that family members and friends of the Alphans having met the aliens from EARTHBOUND, knowing now that their loved ones are alive, set off on a mission to find Alpha and encounter the planets that Alpha passed until they find the Moon and land there or find the planet they have settled down on. Moon goes off again.

Freiberger screwed up Season/Series 2 of Space 1999 just like Season 3 of STAR TREK years earlier. Even James Doohan who played Scotty said Fred had no idea what he was doing. Both ended up as a goofy parody of themselves. If only the right people with resources could remake Space 1999 as Space 2099 ... where Hollow Moon theory would reveal the MOON was a spaceship that brough modern humans to Earth eons ago with a hyperspace hump drive (like in the remake of Battlestar Galactica) inside of it and scientists trigger a oountdown to launch a return to ARKADIA givng them time to stock up on supplies, ships (Eagles and Hawks). Then they would stop off at preprogrammed resupply planets and run into occasional alien ships like in Mission of the Darians. Perhaps even having 2 bases one civilian science/other military and a huge shipyard to build new larger ships/ARKS - some of whom could try and return to Earth.
Testament of Arkadia should have been Space 1999's Season/Series 1 finale instead of The Last Enemy. S1999 Season 2 had its good points (Maya) but they changed it too much. Children of the Gods would have been interesting to see on screen.

I think Abe Mandel is a name that doesn’t come up often but he was head of ITC New York and he was the one who was responsible for dumping UFO after a blip in the ratings in New York and LA and brought that idiot Freiburger to ruin Season 2. No explanation into why the Command Centre lost that beautiful set from Season 1, or why 75% of the cast had disappeared. Like other Anderson shows, maybe Space 1999 would have been better lasting for one season only.

Had things turned out differently Space: 1999 would not exist. The next series/season of UFO would have been made with what was turned into Moonbase Alpha after it was canceled mid plannig, being SHADO 's new HQ.. And the Eagles being new SHADO Interceptors. Given the how bad Space: 1999 season 2 was I would have preferred the continuation of UFO to Space: 1999.
    And that plot sounds ridiculous.
If you watch Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (not the remake) in proper order it ends with SPECTRUM wiped out and even Captain Scarlet killed permanently, Or it seems that way. There is a video out there that shows they intended to create a new season with the original Captain Scarlet and Captain Blue voices but new Black since he had died. But they scrapped that idea for a reboot instead. I dont like reboots.

Can I just say that this story is at odds with what I've previously read. That is that a series 3 was being contemplated by ITC (which may or may not have been the Maya-centric spin off show that was supposedly Fred Freiberger's idea) but ultimately it never went into production despite a new theme tune for series 3 being composed and recorded by Johnny Hawksworth and can be found on TH-cam. Whilst I'm not saying what is said here is wrong, it is a different take on why the series never got a proper conclusion during its lifetime. As the show never really took off in the U.S. anyway, ITC decided to cancel series 3 it at the last minute. Fred Freiberger does get a bad rap from both Star Trek and S1999 fans but in his defence he had to produce both final series of these shows with a significantly reduced budget from what went before. I'm not justifying the somewhat stupid stories he vetted being made, just the fact that on both occasions he was hampered by cost cutting from the production companies involved.

The 2nd season command centre sets seemed like they were running out of resources due to continued journey away from earth.(ca n anyone say"budget cuts"??)

Knowing that the Alphans would survive and start a new colony kind of drains any jeopardy from a Series 3.

The Power that may be (Liberal/Crooks/MAGA who have the MONEY NOW) need to bring back Space 1999 to prepare the next generation of the EARTH about the Moon and other Planet. However, Technology and science has improved as well as Management, Music and etc...and therefore should be reflected in the show. PS Nuclear Dump don't blow up into a nuclear explosion...Weapons accident???Weaponization of Space.

Well, if Chariots of the Gods had been made it would have been Freibergerized, so I assume the children would have been made into goofy monsters and Maya would save the day by changing into a rock.

I still hardly recognise Season 2 even though I have it and have watched it tons of times it’s still the weaker series in my book.

This episode sounds like a ripoff of two Trek episodes: Plato's Stepchildren and The Empath.
