Many seemingly useless databases are shared with the public as APIs since that data is completely harmless and can be used for a lot of potential projects by people. I used to be a government worker (in Israel) and we had APIs for all sorts of things. Usually all it is a data base that sometimes omits sensitive information. As long as it is public, there is no good reason to not share it. This trees thing could easily be something the police use or the municipality to maintain certain aesthetic or bio-diversity standards. Hey Tom, here's a Google Earth tip for you that I've just figured out:
You can go to add -> photo and use that view to line up the photo with the terrain and pinpoint the location that way. Just drag the opacity slider so that you can see through the photo, adjust the field of view, then move around to find a spot where the google earth view matches up with the photo. I wasn't able to get them to match up 100% exactly, because I think the camera adds some barrel distortion, but I was able to get within 100m of that Yosemite location that way.

In the past, I've been known to find the address of my friends/family on Google Maps after they've recently moved, but without them having shared their address with me yet. Sometimes I find the exact address, and sometimes just the building complex, but all with only public information online. Once I wandered around a couple of very rural towns on Google maps and streetview knowing only the amount of time it took my friend to drive to his new place from his old one, and that it was between two cities about 50 miles apart, and some video from his yard. I thought it was great fun. (He was only slightly worried. :-) Some folks think it's too stalkery, but I just love the puzzle aspect of it all. You might need to bring lines from landmarks on the right down to the left of the center point, and landmarks on the left down to the right. Also, use two (or more) landmarks for a two (or more) bearing fix. X marks the spot.

Hey Tom, this is how you use lines to find the location: your diagonal lines are not the right way. Make sure your pictures is leveled, then draw vertical lines on the image. Anything that a single line crosses will align from a top view on google earth. Diagonal lines will lead you to mistakes because of variations of elevation.
Think of vertical lines as you looking from the photographer's view up or down the landscape. The crossed points vertically will always be aligned on a top view ;-)
If you want to be 100% accurate and even avoid potential lens distortion, trace your vertical lines close or on the middle section of the picture as even on a wide angle or fish-eye lens, the center vertical are straight.

26:57 here you could also drop the orange figure on the floor (basically enter street view mode). but because there‘s no street view at this location you‘d enter ground view (i believe that‘s what it‘s called). you‘re then basically still seeing the 3d terrain, but stuck to the ground. this would make it much easier to check if the perspective of this particular spot matches with the one on the picture.
this could maybe come in handy in future episodes :)

Very entertaining to watch! I've been doing something similar while looking at houses online. I mean I can understand not wanting to list the exact address while still living in it but trying see if the area is good or if the seller is trying to hide something is always fun. Personal best was finding a house through the city it was in, a switchbox on the side of the road and solar panels on a neighbouring building.
I'll be watching some more of you, gotta learn from a pro! Keep it up!
