    Greetings to you, nice old Ford. When I was 15 my first vehicle was a 48 f-1, with a flathead V8. Paid $125.00 for it and drove it home. Rebuilt the engine, new brakes, etc. Same color as yours. I did end up selling it a few years later, wish I had it now. Would like to wish you the best of luck with yours. Take care 👍

      Thanks. I should have another video out in the next week or so. When I started working on the front brakes, after getting the rear ones rebuilt, I noticed that spindle bushings had a lot of play (about a 1/16" to 1/8" on the passenger side and about 1/16" on the driver's side) so I decided to replace the bushings and king pins because that amount of movement at the spindle was translating to a huge amount of movement where rubber meets the road. However, I haven't been able to get the kingpins out with the axle still in the truck even after soaking them for a month with penetrating oil. I completely mushroomed the tip of an air hammer trying to get them out. After that initial work, a cascade of things happened which I will talk about in the video.

      So you don't think I am a complete idiot (I prefer to be thought of as only a partial idiot, though my wife would likely disagree), I did remove the locking pins that hold the king pins in place before trying to hammer them out.

    Fun to watch your video. I purchased a 1950 F1 in 1988 and restored it in 1994. It had a 7HA 6 (currently putting in a 8BA flathead V8.) I did some research on the beds for this truck and from 1940 thru some point with the 1950 model F1 the bed floor was steel. I took out the steel bed, put in a 3/4 in pressure treated under layment and then oak.
    Currently upgrading it from 6 to 12 volt, put in dual master cylinder (this for safety- left the drum brakes) and just redoing many things that need attention since first restoration. I drove the truck as my everyday driver for 5 years and it has been used as a truck. Still solid (live in Denver area) and looking forward to getting the truck back on the road in 2023. Not a resto mod. Mostly original and all changes could be change to original. No radio, AC, does have a defroster and after market (period accessory) heater.
    I am not ready to sell it yet but I have the 7HA engine (rebuilt with no 35000 mi since rebuild). If you are interested let me know and once the V8 proves itself, I will like put the 7HA on the market. Parts are still available, but NOS much harder to find than in 1994. If you are interested in my resource list, let me know and I will put one together. Have fun. Definitely a fun truck to drive. Cheers.

      Thanks. I appreciate it. I realized after a bit more research that the bed was original though rusted out rather badly. I haven't had a chance to put out a new video since I finished rebuilding the front suspension. I did get the engine to turn over via the starter after pushing it over ensuring I could get it to go all the way by hand. I did encounter resistance with the exhaust valve on cylinder 4 which is sticking in its guide. Exhaust on cylinder 6 was also sticking open but didn't resist motion like 4 did. Given I was down 2 out of 6 cylinders, I pulled the head to find that the intake on 3 had been "repaired" if your definition of repair involves using a die grinder and a loop of metal that really doesn't seal. So no compression on cylinder 3 either. A maintenance log indicated a valve issue in the early 80's. Over the summer, I recorded a bunch of additional content and ultimately pulled the engine and sent it off for a rebuild. Other than parts availability, did you have a reason to move away from the 7HA 6? Working on these old machines is a blast. I love that everything is metal and rubber rather than brittle plastic.

      I also forgot to mention, in case you are interested, this truck came with the 4 speed "crash box" manual transmission (not synchronized) and a Dana 41 with a 3.93:1 ratio differential. I did find a kit to change the ratio to 3.54:1 which would offer an improvement. I really don't want to swap out the rear end with a modern one.

    I am looking forward to following this project, I’ve done three Chevy 3100,s and currently have one (since 1970), never a Ford. I have a 49 F-1 with lots of parts, have yet to start on it; got to finish my 48 Dodge COE with a 96 5.9 Cummins. Again, looking forward to following your progress. Jim

    I wish mine was as nice. You have a great start for a truck. Most of what you need is reasonably attained. My truck fought me every step. Rusty crap is easier to break or cut then to simply unbolt. Heat is your friend… get a torch….

    • @droppedwrenchgarage5422
      @droppedwrenchgarage5422  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I've been having fun with heat but I have still managed to shear off a bunch of bolts. Thankfully, none that I cared to save because there wasn't much metal left in them anyway. These trucks have so many bolts all over the place, I'm considering getting a handheld induction heater to supplement my torch.

      @@droppedwrenchgarage5422 my son is pro mechanic and I used his (as well as his impact) on occasion. My 48 is almost completely disassembled. It was last registered in 66 and was sitting in a field, so it’s much worse shape. I’m going to make a restomod out of it. The last bit is to get the suspension rivets knocked out. I’m so tried of fighting rusted bolts, once I get the chassis done, I’ll get to the cab.

    Our family had one of those except it was a '50 model, Grandpa bought it brand new then Dad got it after he quit driving in the early sixties,it also had the flathead six and floor shift three speed transmission,Dad always thought that it may have been a retitled '49 because of the floor shift, looks like you have a pretty nice example of the F-1

      There is a next video in the series. If you want to watch, it is at th-cam.com/video/JszDh1pwyhc/w-d-xo.html. I'm gathering footage for the next video in this series now. Because of the holiday, I wasn't able to get two of the parts machined that I needed. The next video should be out in early February.

    Great looking truck. I have a 48 f1 with 226. If you need 226 parts I have a ton of them. there kinda hard to find. unlike V8's but for a inline 6 there a powerhouse !

      Thanks. I appreciate it. I've been working on material for the next video (I only get an hour a day to work on this). I needed to focus getting the brakes working and managed to get the e-brake functional along with cleaning up, repainting, and rebuilding everything. Digging into the brakes revealed serious issues with the steering components. The tie-rod ends were held together with a prayer, the spindle bushings have about a 1/8" of play and the kingpins absolutely refuse to come free while the axle is attached. Hopefully, after Thanksgiving, I'll get the next video out.

      That is the plan all the way down to the 6volt electrical system. I just pushed in new bushings into the front leaf springs today. Unfortunately, the king pins are still giving me problems. Not even a 20 ton press could get them out today.
