I went to Ireland in 2006, we went there, y children and I, to scatter my wife's ashes. We stayed at a BnB in Kilkenny and the lady of the house was very helpful and told us a great place to scatter her ashes. We went to Tramore and had some fun. It was a family trip we had planned before the death of my wife. We went to honor her.
What a wonderful memory! My mom has always wanted to go to Ireland, but her health is too bad now. She lives with me and my family. In June, I'm taking my 18 year old daughter on our first international (we're from US) trip. Our first stop is Ireland so we can take pictures for my mom! We will each be wearing one of her favorite jewelry pieces so she can say a piece of her goes with us!
@@kendracoker462 if your flying into shannon definitely best places within 2 hours is probably cliffs of moher or dingle even bunratty castle if your with a family ( thats only about 10 minutes). 2 hours is probably nothing to americans. By the way we hate your accents and im sorry on behalf of the irish but you will hear quick remarks. Trust me, we dont mean to be mean its just its weird to hear ye. Safe travels and i hope you get used to driving on the right side of the car!
Thanks for the info. We will be traveling by buses and Uber, so I won't have to worry with driving. No worries about the accents...I hate watching the news here and hearing our own accents. I live in the south, but hate it when they interview the "hicks" on the news. It makes those of us who are well-educated cringe!

My condolences. I am so glad that you had a nice time and people were kind to you.
Here's advice I'd give.
1. Only go to temple bar for a look, don't buy a pint - too expensive.
2. Do the wild Atlantic way, its a coastal drive on the west that encompasses many sites.
3. Irish people like to take the piss, don't take take it personally, we're just joking around with you.
4. Dublin has many free museums such as the National Archaeology and National History Museums of Ireland.
5. As Wolter said, be prepared for dramatic weather changes, on st Patricks day in 2018 it snowed on St Patrick's Day!.
6. Go to a music session at a pub if you can. Its the authentic Irish experience, people do this even when there are no tourists around.
7. Never leave a bag on a table outside. I was in Dublin before and a café owner told my girlfriend to take her bag off the table as sometime people would run past and snatch bags.
8. Rail, and even intercity Bus Éireann buses can be very expensive. A Dublin coach return ticket from Waterford to Dublin will cost only only 20.
9. Try Irish Chocolate! It's very nice.
10. Just have fun with the people and the atmosphere. Its quite a convivial atmosphere around the place, particularly in Summer. Irish people are easy to talk to and are generally happy to interact or share some information you might need!
Temple bar is great, who cares that its overpriced.

Take it from an Irish native 🇮🇪... Dublin is like any other city. Aim more for Killarney, Dingle, Galway, Westport, Kilkenny and anywhere in County Clare.
Avoid 🚫: kissing the blarney stone (ripoff tourist trap), jaunting cars in Killarney (horse and cart rides through the national park - locals avoid), Guinness store house (unless you really like Guinness), and probably my last avoid is temple bar in Dublin City... It is renouned for being a lively spot for tradional music sessions, pubs and outdoor music and entertainers... The truth is it is the best place to be offered drugs openly, see a fight, be in a fight or get robbed and to boot it is the most expensive place to drink and eat as it is a tourist trap. Ask a local they will always tell you how it is in a particular place.
Best time to come here: during our warmer weather... May to September.
You can wing it while you are here... Trivago and trip advisor are great to use here for booking that day for hotels and most bed and breakfast accommodation is available as walk ins if not full that night.

We were in Ireland in September 2009 and I can attest, as a tourist, to this. I did do the Guinness storehouse though and while it is gimmicky there is pint at the end with an amazing view of Dublin. Temple Bar was an experience that I could have mostly done without. My brother and I fortunately, or unfortunately depending, fell in with a former hurler at Gogarty's and drank a ridiculous amount of tequila with him.

Here are my top ones from my trip:
- Don’t be afraid to talk to people. The Irish are generally pretty friendly.
- Get out of Dublin if you can. I spent a week in Dublin with friends, and while it was great, I really wanted to get out to see other places. We took one trip to the Cliffs of Moher, and it wasn’t nearly enough to see all the beautiful countryside I wanted to see.
- Don’t stay in a hotel in the city center, as it can be rather expensive. Try to find an Airbnb or something similar. You’ll save a lot of $$$ and you’ll feel more connected to the society around you instead of feeling so much like an outsider.
- If you don’t like strong language, this may not be the destination for you. :)
- If you pay with card, they might give you the option to pay in Euro or your home currency. Even though paying in your own currency is convenient, you are paying for it, because they are giving you an unfavorable exchange rate. Opt to pay in Euros; that way you get the standard interbank rate from your card issuer.
There are no fries on a full Irish breakfast.

I have to say we loved Cork when we were there. I would recommend any one visit it when you are in Ireland. Nice walkable city with lots of narrow streets and places to explore. There was buskers on every street. It really had a great atmosphere. The food was fantastic also.

My friend and I did a 2 week road trip for my birthday last June throughout Ireland. Best trip ever. Driving on the roads was a bit tricky at first, but once you get around the big roundabout leaving Dublin airport, you're good to go and actually really really fun to drive around the countryside and cliffs and towns. Worth getting a rental in my opinion. We went clockwise from Dublin to Waterford, to Killarney, Portmagee (waters were too rough to ride out to Skellig Michael, but the Kerry Cliffs were very cool), the Dingle peninsula (the town of Dingle was wicked fun; very underrated whisky!), birthday in Limerick, stayed on (and strayed off of) the Wild Atlantic Way all the way up the coast; Galway (lots of pubs, clubs, restaurants, street festivals), Sligo (crashed a bachelorette party on a Sunday night), and ended up all the way in Malin Head - my favourite place in Ireland after Dingle. Along the way, we sampled a wide variety of local beers and whiskies - made for a really good time making friends at pubs and restaurants! We took the ferry out of Greencastle and did a nice drive into Northern Ireland (I was disappointed that no one looked at or stamped my passport) along the majority of GoT locations and castles, small towns and memorable hostels (the one at the foot of Giant's Causeway was sooo much fun), then into Belfast for a few nights (all during the World Cup, so pubs were pretty crazy at this time!). Slowly drove back to Dublin, stopping in random towns for coffee, brewery tours, and pub food, mesmerized by the scenery (I glued a GoPro to the dash of the rental and got some unreal scenes...I literally drove up a freaking mountain to get to Malin Head - best drive ever other than Cabot Trail in Canada). Seriously best trip ever; I decided that I'd visit once every five years-it's that affordable and memorable.
Everything he said in the video is true; from the weather to the food (he forgot to mention how generous the portions are!), the people are very helpful and friendly - at no point during our trip did we feel worried or frightened (for context, I'm 37, she's 30), and it was without a doubt, one of the most memorable things I've ever done.

Yeah I agree, Cobh is actually far better than the main city. It might be a longer drive, but there are tons of historic docks where the titanic set sail and spike island. Plus the locals are all really nice :)

I spent a week in Ireland about 5 years ago. My brother’s family and some in-laws and I rented a castle! It was marvelous! We went all over on day trips.
I liked Cork! We spent a fun day there.
And I can’t say enough about the people. Everyone was great!

Don't recommend Donegal, all my favourite spots are being destroyed by tourism after GoT and Star Wars 😭 Malin head was always one of my favourite places to visit. Also several spots in Northern Ireland where GoT was filmed, and near where I live are getting damaged badly due to tourism
I'll never forget sitting in a cafe in Donegal Town and hearing a group of American tourists saying they were afraid to go any further north in case they got shot.....
If any of your viewers are interested in astronomy theres an area of Kerry which is an international dark sky reserve. As far as i know it is the only gold tier reserve in the northern hemisphere. (Please dont come at me if more have been added recently!)
It covers 700 km2 not far from Killarney.
Most tourists go to Kerry anyway so it might be something a little different you could check out!

One other thing: when you depart Dublin for the U.S, it has U.S Border Preclearance, meaning you go through U.S immigration and customs IN IRELAND, so when you arrive in America, you can just get your bags and leave :)

I went to Ireland recently with my gf, we stayed through New Years. We flew into Dublin got a rental car, it took us a couple of hours to get use to the driving but caught on real quickly and the drivers weren’t aggressive at all! We only heard honking when another local was saying hello to someone else. We booked with AirB&Bs and stayed at peoples houses and we went from Dublin to Cork, Galway, Belfast, and back to Dublin. But YES if you want to explore Ireland in peace without having a deadline time with tour buses, GET A RENTAL CAR! Driving not difficult on the opposite side of the road and is actually more enjoyable in my opinion and you can buy a big red letter “N” which basically means “New Driver” and stick it on the front and back of the car to let local drivers know that you’re a new driving in Ireland and they’ll actually give you space or avoid your car all together, which we did! So with our rental we drove around the entire island. If you’re in Cork find a restaurant called “The White Horse” great food! When we made it to Belfast, we finally went on our first bus tour after all that driving we needed a break, plus we had a three night stay in Belfast which is why we took the tour and the tour took care of a lot Northern Ireland popular destinations which was like 4 or 5 places and cost about €30 each person at the time. Everything else in the video about right, expect to pay for parking almost everywhere you go, make sure you have money ready, most areas accept credit/debit cards but I found that paying with actual money was easy and faster AND if you’re staying somewhere that has a restroom USE it before heading out! I had a difficult time finding restrooms...ugh it sucked lol sometimes I had to walk back to our Air B&B just to use the restroom, luckily it was towards the end of our nights but the walk was sometimes more than 2 miles. Oh and if you do get a rental car and hook up your phone through Bluetooth don’t panic if the music stops and a news update start playing, the updates usually about traffic hour, weather, and any small emergency within the area, pretty helpful. But yea! For anyone going to Ireland soon! Enjoy!!! Don’t panic about the small things and just enjoy the culture and scenery.

A great way to tour Ireland is by bicycle. We did this in 2007 and 2010, averaging about 80 km per day. The west coast is beautiful. Lots of smaller back roads; drivers are pretty damn good! We mixed it up between B&Bs and the odd hotels. I’d go back anytime!

You should DEFINITELY visit the northwest. Mayo/Sligo/Donegal. Much less crowded and even more spectacular scenery. With traditional culture and a far cheaper vacation the northwest is a MUST for an Irish vacation. Food is awesome, fresh and authentic. Best part, it’s only 1:30 hrs from Shannon and 2:30 hrs from Dublin.
Youghal. Go to Youghal. A somewhat hidden gem of a seaside town where i spent happy times in my childhood.

Pat Aherne Youghal is not a hidden gem. It’s crawling in tourists half the year around. Probably more Irish and Europeans than Americans, but I don’t think many would think of it as a “hidden gem”.
Explore the West, County Mayo and the Connemara part of County Galway, even nicer than County Kerry.
A lot of our stuff is much older than the Egyptian pyramids.
You’re not well if you think those places are better than Kerry. Kerry is miles ahead of everywhere

We loved Iteland. Friendly people, family oriented pretty country, and great vegetarian food. We also had the fortune of enjoying plenty of sunshine in spring. But the roundabouts, as efficient as they are, drove us crazy.

Driving from Cork to Dublin is now 2 - 3 hours or less. Galway to Dublin is 3 Hours. Belfast to Dublin is 2 hours drive. This is both for coach and car travelling. It is cheap to get a bus to the next city, 20 Euros return some times, the return fair is for me to get home, but you guys get a one-way ticket.
Spend only 2 days in each city as they are small enough to see in that time.
Google...Air B&B is a great way to have a nice place to stay and can be cheaper than a hotel.

We will land in Shannon on a Tuesday and travel by southern coast to Dublin. WE have no room reservations, just going to stop when we get to a nice town and explore, then find an AirBNB to rest each night. This is our first international trip, so we are nervous but excited! Excellent Advice. I visited Ireland for the first time in June of 2018. I agree with you about getting out to see the country side and the coastline. Truly stunning. I spent a few days in Dublin and 5 days in Killarney as a base to explore SW Ireland. I highly recommend it.

Hey wolters great video! I studied abroad in Galway last semester and it was an unbelievable experience. The smithwick's and Guinness at the pubs were truly phenomenal. One place that you didn't mention that was very cool was Connemara (North of Galway). Very beautiful area with lots of great views and a number of smaller rural Irish villages. Definitely a place everyone should check out if visiting the Galway area.
The winding stairs in castles were strategically made that way. Knights would , for the most part, hold there weapons in their right hand so stairs that wound in a clockwise direction gave the defenders the advantage.

My grandpa was an Irish immigrant but unfortunately I never got to meet him. I would love to be able to visit one day and learn more about my heritage!
I usually go down to Kerry for the summer, (I live further up in the midlands) and it’s absolutely beautiful, gorgeous scenery and rural villages, would recommend Parknasilla resort and spa, great location and not far from the main beaches, with a small one just outside the hotel. Expect rainy weather though if not visiting in the hotter summer months. If visiting I recommend you pack for wet weather!
For anyone who is coming for a weekend to Dublin, try get to Meath for a day. We have Newgrange, heritage site older than the pyramids, Trim Castle built in the Norman times where they filmed Braveheart, Loughcrew old heritage site, Hill of Tara where the Kings of Ireland used to sit.

I’m Irish and I think you nailed it on the head pretty much across the board. You’ve definitely been here more than once!
Just a note on the buses here in Ireland. In the cities such as Dublin the buses go pretty much everywhere. But if you want to head down in the countryside a bit, DEFINITELY rent a car as buses through the countryside are limited and expensive. To get from Dublin to the centre of Ireland, about two counties over ( known locally as the Midlands) it costs about €20 for a return ticket per person on buses and the trains. €20 in diesel and petrol will get you much further overall it's a much better option.

I went to Ireland twice... 12 nights in 2019 (Stayed in Dublin with a few short tours into the surrounding countryside).
16 nights in 2021. 9 nights in Dublin plus a 1 week Paddywagon tour all over the country. Highlights included Newgrange, Glendalough, The Giant's Causeway, The Cliffs of Moher and Blarney Castle. I hope to go back at least one more time. Hell, I'd love to live there.
Great info. We flew into Shannon with great ease and rented a car. Driving was exciting! Everywhere we went the people were so friendly, funny and full of info ready to help. Loved this country and will return one day!

One of the most enjoyable things i did in Ireland was go see the sheep dogs work on a sheep farm. Amazing to watch the dogs and owners interact.
I’m Irish and you do tip in pubs and restaurants, northwest and west Ireland is better than south, Donegal is breathtaking
Derry city is brilliant, loads of history and lots of beautiful scenery in the entire county of derry, for example musendon temple

In relation to the narrow, winding roads, another tip is to take that into account when planning your itinerary. Coming from the US or Canada, you're used to going 50 on a road that posts 50 as the maximum. On some roads in Ireland, 50 may be the posted maximum but you'll never be going close to that speed. A lot of driving maps online make the same kind of assumption, and can give you the wrong idea of how long it takes to get somewhere in Ireland on the country roads.

Great list, I would also mention that in the winter months, most tour companies don’t run day tours. So if you come in the off season you really should rent a car because you won’t be able to do much otherwise.
I live here and Waltor pretty much nails it. Except cork city is well worth a day trip. Lot of things to see with great bars, museums and great places to eat
If you want to rent and insist on an automatic, reserve WELL in advance. If it's any consolation the pedals are in the same place, the only adaptation you have to make is shifting with your left hand - no problemo! Thanks Mark for the usual awesome input - enjoy all!

Also, those hexagonal rocks are a type of geologic structure called columnar jointing. These can form in volcanic rocks when they are cooling. They are most commonly made of basalt; which the columns at Giants Causeway are. This is probably the most famous example of this structure; which is why it is one of the places on my geologist’s bucket list
I'm going to Ireland on a Study Abroad trip this summer, and I'm looking forward to it. The Irish lady running the trip came and visited my college for the briefing on the trip, and she said she loves the South because everyone else's accent is stronger than hers

We will be covering Irish Gaelic, traditional Irish music, Irish history, and Irish civil rights. I don't really care about that last one to be frank. We will also be surfing, visiting historic Irish monuments, and visiting Northern Ireland as well.

I live in Kells and it's actually a decently nice town. There are ruins of a monastery that are accessible from around 10AM to 6PM and they're very cool. There's also a hotel and a few BnB's. It's also famous for the Book of Kells, which you can see in the Trinity College Library in Dublin.
Irish is the native language of Ireland. Gaelic is related to it but that's more affiliated with Scotland.
@Solar Dwarf -- Sort of true but still not really. Irish is Irish, while Gaelic is more Scottish than anything else. Both the Irish and Scottish are closely related anyway due to being Celtic nations. However, that does not mean they share the same exact language. A lot of similarities for sure. Yet, their respective languages are pretty distinguishable from one another.

Irish Gaelic is different to Scottish Gaelic.
Irish its pronounced Gay-lick whereas Scotland its Gah-lick. But using either term is fine and correct.
Gaelige came from ireland when the scotti tribe of ireland moved to scotland it brought the culture and language and over the years it split from irish gaelige changing words or pronounciations thats why scotland and ireland are similar

Oh wow hope you enjoyed Waterford I studied and work in Waterford 😊😊 Waterford is great and probably overlooked compared to other Cities/Towns in Ireland. It's the oldest city in Ireland and full of history especially if you're interested in Vikings.

The Dingle Peninsula has probably the most quintessentially Irish scenery. I would also highly recommend the Beara Peninsula in County Cork, for its rugged green wilderness.
*DO NOT* encourage tourists to drive slow. Irish people have jobs to go to, and lives to live. We are sick of being stuck behind tourists driving at 40km/h. The most selfish and dangerous thing Americans do when they come to Ireland is drive around at 40km/h while there is a line of traffic stuck behind them. I see it all the time in Kerry, Busses and Trucks that are on the clock being held up for 25 mins because tourists cant drive, its not fair. Just pull over and let people get to work.
Be mindful that they might also be being careful of our backroads and not being used to driving on the other side of the road. Jesus. Just choose a different route or leave at a less congested time.

Mark Collins Making assumptions now are we? I’m from Wicklow. Americans tend to take the backroads for a start and are entitled to drive on them as much as you are. The fact that you lack a basic understanding that someone may be driving at a slower pace for a reason that’s not selfishness says it all. They might be heading somewhere they can’t reach by main road or motorway as well. School runs are nine and before and three and four - a time that’s not peak tourist time anyway. Buses and trucks don’t tend to take typically “scenic routes”, those roads aren’t practical. (Excluding school buses.)
Bottom line is that you either deal with driving a little slower until you can pass them or take a different route. Nobody is going to cater their life to you, as you’re not going to cater to them. I have to leave earlier and earlier to get to Dublin on time for work because of traffic. I don’t complain, I get on with it. The irony here is that you’re the actual self obsessed one by insisting that THEY are the huge issue. I can’t be “self obsessed” for being welcoming and understanding of tourists, but hey apparently I fecking am.

Best thing to do in Ireland in my opinion is to hike the Wicklow mountains. My favourite place in the world.

Not sure how long you spent in Cork but you should give it another try. We're a friendly city, with fantastic restaurants, pubs and lovely little towns only a short drive from town.
Going to be in Dublin for St. Patrick’s day! Would love any recommendations! Heading to Galway after to go surfing and see the cliffs!
Put aside a day, pack a lunch and go for a drive on the backroads. Driving aimlessly is so much more fun than stressing yourself to go to the big tourist hotspots. Dublin is also kinda shite, too many people, expensive and a tourist trap. Your euro will be worth much more when you are away from Dublin and the people will be much more appreciative of it, even a euro because the government gives roughly half of the improvement money to Dublin. It took 3 or 4 years for the motorway to Galway to get finished because of lack of funding. We had to turn off at Gort to go the roundabout way to Galway for the longest time. The motorway has been finished for roughly a year now and its much better. Go have fun, just remember that Dublin ain't all its cracked up to be. Bunratty castle by Limerick(lim-er-ick, not lime-rick) just got new wolfhounds, sure its like 20 euro per adult and more for food and the gift shop but its an entire day of fun. You even can watch classes on how to cook traditional food and you get to sample it.

I feel like I'm getting tips from a bud who really knows the score of the place and is just dying to tell me all about it. GREAT job.
We were in Galway a few years ago and asked a bartender about tipping. He was kind of blasé about it and, understandably, took a jab at us saying something to the effect of "In Ireland, we pay our workers", but he did say that it's not uncommon for people to leave the loose change from paying. You don't (can't?) run a tab at a pub and pay as you go and typically there will be a few coins in change.
It's pretty normal to call pints and leave the money on the bar if you're sitting at the bar. It gets collected either at purchase or when the bartender finishes the current rounds of drinks. If there's change left when leaving you just leave it and if there isn't maybe throw a bit on
Great tips, I would add to buy a Leapcard Visitor to use all the transports and spend less. To choose a pub with live music-irish dance show-traditional food (like the Arlington hotel in Dublin) and travel through the WildAtlanticWay

My wife our daughter our son and myself went to Ireland in 2017. In the event I could have it my way I would move there. The rock fences, The hedges in the countryside were truly magnificent. The Wild Atlantic Way is beautiful, Newgrange about 40 minutes north of Dublin is older than the Pyramids. The Wicklow mountains are gorgeous.
