Gary: It amazes me the amount of money my neighbors spend on 'soil' and 'amendments' for their 'rec' plants.....often exceeding $600/yr. (Fox Farm, kelp, bone meal, blood meal, Myco, fish emulsion, etc.). I have been using your basic sterile mix over and over with little or no fertilizers and expend no money for almost similar results. Misconceptions seem to carry for generations.... growers, like painters, will stick to what they have always used; unwilling to entertain a paradigm shift in thinking. Keep sharing, I''m listening.

"using your basic sterile mix over and over with little or no fertilizers "
Are you saying plants are growing with no N, no P or no K , as sterile mix can't provide that for sure ?
That will be a first of its kind. Even Gary recommends to use liquid / inorganic fertilizer in such medium , as the sterile medium can't provide the bacteria or fungi to break the organic fertilizer.

Thank you for all the information. I have many containers plants. Change my whole worldview on potting mix. Now, I need to go change all of them out as they are all sitting in potting mix I got from the store.

Thank you so much for the interview and teaching us about potting soil. I used your ratios for Top Pot and add about 5% chunky coconut coir. The plants are much happier and healthier. 🐉🐉

Great to see a video on container gardening!!! Gary, I have great news... After repotting about 100 berry and fruit trees last September and October, I only lost a few very small blackberries!! And we had an extremely cold winter here in north Idaho! All the blueberries are budding out beautifully....they were so unhappy in potting soil! All the plants are so happy to be able to breathe! I will send pictures soon when all the leaves are out. The raspberries were the first to leaf out, and they were very unhappy in the potting soil! Thank you SO much for this valuable information, it saved my garden!

Try the extension Ears: Bass Boost, EQ Any Audio for Chrome. If you block ads and use Ears, you can customize the audio according to your preference and you won't get the ads blasting you when you increase the volume.

Thanks Gary. I have watched a few other videos of yours. Mainly about avocados.
Would you recommend removing most of the existing bad soil from 1.5-3 gallon potted avocado trees while repotting?
Any tips specifically for repotting avocado trees?
What time of year is best?

Looking at the grow bags, have you looked at the Living Soil grow bags, that have the liner down to 4” above the base, which helps with retaining water in our dry climate, but also helps prevent root circling.

I have a question? What about epiphytes like Anthurium that we grow in pots? What soil should I use? I can't imagine sand, pumice, clay would be good for them? Why does it sound like people are talking in the background while you are giving your class?

Absolutely the best effortless gardening advice and knowledge on youtube. Vid suggestion if I may. I been having conversations with my pineapple plants, they don’t want to cooperate.

Gary is a businessman and he usually Does videos and chooses topics around what they have in store, which is great. Look on THE webpage, next saturday is around pruning trees I believe. Because they probably have trees in stock. And there's plenty to talk about.

Unfortunately we do not ship. Our distributor only had it available in California...however recently was bought and absorbed by a nation wide distributor called BFG Supply. If you ask your local (if in the U.S.) garden center to request Gary's Best TOP POT from BFG, it may become available throughout the country...eventually.

@@GarysBestGardening I've been doing it with more mature fruit trees in washing machine drums. My natural soil is very rocky so I've given them a headstart in the pots with good rich soil encouraging a more robust fiberous rootball with the root pruning occuring due to the exposure to the numerous holes in the drums so when they get big enough i cut the bottoms off & let them grow into the ground
