The phot etch is fabulous! I would think one has to be patient when assembling the brackets under the deck. Glad you have all 3 Hasegawa photo etch. Difficult to find these days

Good evening Nigel. I can hardly wait to watch you build this model. There is a lot of photo etch which you make look easy and professional. Thanks for the review and your excellent videos. 56:53

Interesting kit and PE. If you want a challenge with PE that looks to be a good one to give you a work out. Not one for me, but look fwd to seeing it being taken on.

    Dear Nigel,
Well, that was a mammoth review! I am very impressed with the 1/350 scale kits and the level of detail that can be achieved nowadays. I suspect that such a kit would take me many years to complete, hence my hesitation!
    Good luck with your project!

Hi Nigel, Thank you so much for this review. what a beauty 😍. According to Wikipedia, the Akagi was modernized in 1935 at Sasebo arsenal, Nagasaki prefecture, originally built in the 1920's in Kure, Hiroshima prefecture, so the Sasebo grey is right (Tamiya LP13).
One thing that surprised me is the big Japanese flag decal for the deck, I thought it was there later, at Midway (in 42).
I agree that the hull is molded the way it should be, best detail, ease of build.
It would look great on a dry dock diorama with a crane. Thank you so much again for this review, good continuation👋🏻

The Akagi is my absolute favourite ship of all time followed very closely by the other fine carrier the Kaga and the battleship Fuso..I remember a good few years back having a e-mail chat with a gentleman from Trumpeter about doing Japanese WW2 ships and that they definitely had no interest in doing IJN kits in 1/200......come forward now and now we have the Yamato tooled by trumpy in 1/200.....So here's a big cheer if they've tool the Akagi..Kaga and Fuso in 1/200❤❤❤😢

Would you believe there was a third Yamato class battle ship laid down, but during construction (after Midway) was converted to the aircraft carrier Shinano. Just a bit too late for a full conversion to a fleet carrier. Imagine a full blown carrier on a Yamato hull?

    • @ente6546

Shinano was pretty much finised, she was sunk on her way to get stuff like planes on board

Nigel, Between Pearl Harbor and Midway (6 months), They did have the catch nets. These were permanent. The only changes to the ship was the addition of the Japanese flag to the forward section of the flight deck. This information coming from AJ Press, #49 AKAGI vol.1, #50 AKAGI vol.2. These 2 books I highly recommend for anyone building this kit. Also PLEASE take a look at Bunker Studios 1/350 Japanese Zero's, Val's , Kate's on E-bay. These are far more superior than anything offered by kit manufacturers.

I was in Tokyo several months ago and indeed Japanese made stuff is way cheaper than here as you would expect. I was able to get Tamiya 1/32 F16 and F15 for around £45 each v £140+ here. As long as you don’t get stopped at customs it pretty damn cheap potentially! Non Japanese stuff tended to be similar price to here

Fascinating and intricate stuff, Nige - should keep you off the street corner for a while, as my old grandma would have said. Could the vessel have been built in one yard and subsequently converted to a carrier at Sasebo? That may explain the paint question.

Hi She was Kure: Akagi [before the third deck], and Sasebo Akagi [after modernisation], took me ages and I found all the details on all IJN Colours on a Japanese Models Fan Website where the issuer as done as huge amount of research on all IJN Colours. Hope that helps. It links to the yeard that she had work or was built there there are subtle differences. Tamiya do both colours

Morning Nigel finally got to watch the end of the review great Vid and review. Its a beaut of a model. Im a quarter way through Fujimi Hiryu and the Akagi will be my next challenge. Have you got Mantlets/Bridge Island Sandbags for the Bridge ?? as it looks as if most IJN Carriers had them and they add that extra touch. Not easy to find but I have links if you want them let me know. Also I got extra aircraft for both Carriers fron a Japanese model shop who seem by far the best source for the harder to get stuff. The only thing I searched the planet and failed on was the super detailing set so well done for getting that....do yo know where you can get another one. Cant wait to watch your build of this fantastic model. Thanks as always Tim

OMG....when the photo-etch arrived....(and there’s a lot of it).....I realised that I best get those instructions out, that show me how to double up the lenses on my head mounted eye-glasses....might need to put down sheeting, just to hound out the carpet monster....the look my mate gave me (rolling eyes)! 😂😂😂

@@NigelsModellingBench 😂😂😂😂......I’m a bit jealous really, Nigel. Trying to find any kits of Kaga and Akagi is very difficult indeed...l think that the Japanese internal market accounts for most of them but I consider myself fortunate enough, to have picked up the small scale version? Anyhow, ATB with your kit...one things for sure, she’ll look fabulous when you’ve got her finished, can’t wait to see it actually, especially the photo-etch work, as it will transform the whole going on?

Akagi would have made a much better Battlecruiser with 10x16.1" guns, than it did as a carrier. It's the same issues as the US had with the Lexington's as carrier conversions, far too much weight in the wrong places
However that's not a criticism of the model Nigel is reviewing,

this is where things gets really shitty, you wanna buy this model kit, but the photo etched parts are NOT included. OK fine, you go and buy the photo etched parts, oh no, they are sold in mutiple seperate packs, and one is in stock and the other 3 are sold out. Why the hell would any company market their products like this? it's absolute dog poo way of doing business.
