ELSI Network Meeting - September 2023

On Thursday 7 September 2023, the ELSI Genomics Network held their 3nd 2023 event, online via Zoom. The event was titled ‘Genetics & insurance: Key findings from the A-GLIMMER project’. The question of genetic discrimination in personally risk-rated insurance products like life insurance has been in tension for decades. However, its relevance and importance is increasing given mainstreaming and expansion of genetic and genomic testing. Australia’s insurance industry largely self-regulates the use of genetic information, and while a moratorium is in place there are concerns that it is not operating as well as it should. Dr Jane Tiller and Professor Martin Delatycki discussed how genetic discrimination is currently playing out in Australia’s insurance landscape. The A-GLIMMER project found numerous instances of concern and has recommended a raft of legal and regulatory reforms. Jane’s talk and Martin’s commentary were then discussed with attendees, with Q&A moderated by ELSI Network coordinator Professor Ainsley Newson.
