  • Architecture on Location | Photography in Tskaltubo, Georgia features one of the highlights on both of my visits to Georgia this year, Tskaltubo, a small town a short distance from Kutaisi a city in the West of the Country.
    This is not meant as a guide, but a warning as well as a showcase of the town's plight and my story in images from both visits.
    During the Soviet times, the Georgian town was a popular health destination famed for its therapeutic water and sanatoriums. Four trains arrived daily full of guests from Moscow in Russia. When the Soviet Union collapsed in the early 1990s, the buildings were abandoned and fell into decay.
    In 1992 a war in nearby Abkhazia broke out. An estimated 10,000 Displaced Georgians fled from the conflict and were given temporary shelter in Tskaltubo’s unoccupied buildings and sanatoriums. Twenty-five years later, hundreds of families remain living in these stunning architectural remains of a Soviet past.
    Thank you in addition to the guys at Georgian Imedi TV for the footage (taken during a video interview), as well as the couple of drone clips sent to me by Adam X.
    If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I will get back to you. Thanks for watching everyone! - James 

    Shot over the course of six months this is my take on a now known photographic gem. But what are your thoughts on the residents that live here?

    Hello James, It has been a great pleasure meeting you briefly at the NNPS talk in Holt, on 16th October. I enjoyed watching again your video today, thank you. Our daughter visited Georgia mid-September this year and loved it. Looking forward to meeting you again at another of your talk. Cheers, Frederic

    Just got back from a week in Georgia - what a fascinating country. We passed through Tskaltubo - our driver pointed out a handful of the sanatoriums, but we didn't get the chance to stop and explore. Thanks for uploading this glimpse into what we missed!

      James Kerwin if you ever come to the USA let me know I have a few places for you. Can’t wait for the new videos! Stay dafe my friend, we are living in tough times. Wear a mask and gloved as a lot of buildings have asbestos and clothing will get contaminated and the asbestos will be carried into your car and place of living.

    4 trains daily is incorrect information

    • @JamesKerwin
      @JamesKerwin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Back in 2017/18 when I made this video little was known about the town.
      In fact, Google maps didn't clearly lay it all out for you as it does today, there wasn't a tourist office or Nino to run you around.
      This was made by researching (in Georgian) and relaying the information (as I, as the tourism office will tell you, was one of the very first Westerners to hit the town for photograph) - some information could be a little off but I am comfortable with that 5 years later.,
      Many trains a day would appear - how else would you fill 19 Sanatoriums?

      @@JamesKerwin Makes sense, however, there was a daily train from Moscow and Sochi to the resort.
