    Nice to meet you. I am a middle school student in Korea who is interested in PMP, MP3, pocket PC, and PDA(≧∇≦)
    I'm a person who thinks old electronic products such as PDA are valuable, and I want to implement them. And I found this channel. It was the best to teach and use my favorite PDA in detail. It was fun ♪
    I hope this channel is highly recognized because I know that there are few views and subscribers. This is because it was beneficial as a retro lover. I don't know if the meaning was conveyed well using a translator, but I will continue to support this channel!

    I've got this model, and it's very disappointing only because of the highly unreadable screen. The backlit doesn't really help, even in the darkness. Except this, it's a very good device. The very good point is that it works on traditional batteries. But highly unusable because of the display. A fun project would be to change the backlit for a more powerful one.
    I can't remember which model, but it's got a big brother, monochrome display too, and everyone seems to think it's got a very good display. I wish I can get one someday but I haven't found one yet.
    BTW, thanks for the video, you rock really (as I told you already, you really deserve a lot more views !).

      The screen isn't the worst, but it's certainly not the best. It's a shame, as you say everything else is great! Especially that it will run on standard batteries

    If not for the barely audible alarm, this would be my daily-driver Palm without question. I wonder if it's possible to retrofit a beefier piezo speaker.

    • @HandheldComputing
      @HandheldComputing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know what you mean, its very quiet especially compared to the M500 (which also has a vibrate function) I'm not sure if it the speaker or the driving current that's the issue. What I do know is that a smooth connection to the plastics below can make a big difference to the volume as it vibrates the plastic shell. Its a great PDA otherwise :-)

    The lack of comments for the effort of the video is sad.
    Considering the amount of time I've had an eye on your channel I think this is my second comment hehe. Just about to upgrade to a 16MB Psion Revo if all goes well, EPOC along with EPOC's software has always satisfied me more than Android ever has.

    • @HandheldComputing
      @HandheldComputing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your comment! Yes I don't get a lot of comments considering the number of views, but not an issue.
      Nice, I have the 5/5Mx but have never used the Revo, battery replacement is a common issue but otherwise very reliable machines from what I've read and I agree Epoc is way better to use than android :-)

    • @Samson1
      @Samson1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HandheldComputing Yes, over engineering is definitely blatant in Revos haha! My daily driver used to be a 5mx, lovely machines. I still have a 256MB CF with little me's stuff on it waiting for another ER5 machine.
      Erm, how do you connect your Psions to Windows? I use a serial PCI-E card and the only functions that don't work are those that require stuff no longer built into File Manager. I've seen people use USB adapters successfully to EPOC32 not seeing them at all. (I'm on Windows eleven.)

    • @HandheldComputing
      @HandheldComputing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Samson1 On windows 10 I use a USB serial adapter but you are right the file explorer is none functional and I haven't managed to install sis files either. So I use my p1610 XP machine most of the time as everything works perfectly!
      For the moment I am avoiding Win11 as the WMDC wont work on 11 so cannot sync any CE devices. I'm hoping there will be a fix...

    • @Samson1
      @Samson1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HandheldComputing That's a massive oof. Win10 is infinitaly better than 11 anyway unless you have specific desktop hardware that take advantage of 11's hardware compatibility. Honestly I'm a little surprised nobody's made plugins which add this stuff back into Windows, let alone File Manager. I suppose it's just not something most people think of.

    • @HandheldComputing
      @HandheldComputing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Samson1 There are a lot of company's still using legacy CE machines and there was a Win10 update ~2018 which stopped WMDC from working and it was nearly 6 months before a work around was created. I'm not that hopeful when it comes to Win11 as these devices are getting older and why would Microsoft bother to support them?
      Interesting that you don't find Win11 any better, though that seems to be the general consensus at the moment.

    Nice piece of kit, the Sony Clie looks generally of higher hardware quality than the Palm, shame Palm lost their way really... I have a couple of Palm and Psion devices but I generally feel the Psion's were much more functional overall, shame Psion also lost their way!

    • @HandheldComputing
      @HandheldComputing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sony generally made much better palm OS devices than Palm which I always think is pretty ironic! Yeah they defiantly lost their way and just didn't innovate when every one else did.
      Epoc OS is much more functional, especially as they could do multitasking unlike palm OS which reloads the program every time you swap making it slow for copying between applications

    • @another3997
      @another3997 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HandheldComputing Yes, Sony devices were a cut above Palm at the time, although later Palms caught up in many ways. Psion and Palm really had different aims, despite some overlap, so not directly comparable. Palm OS was certainly much faster than EPOC in general use. I don't think any OS since has been as responsive or power frugal. But I really do like EPOC and SIBO. 🙂

    • @HandheldComputing
      @HandheldComputing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@another3997 Palm OS caught up with the T and its sliding form factor but I think Sony generally did a much better job both in the OS tweaks and design.
      The reason the Palm OS is so fast is mainly because its not a multitasking OS so only one job at a time, its also a super simple OS which is both its biggest strength and weakness. Epoc is a much more powerful and complex OS which could replace your laptop for almost everything... almost...

    Your video reminded me that long long ago I got two of these SL10s from eBay, but got busy otherwise and forgot all about them...now I have a new project!
    It is a nifty thing that the Sony OS allows you to fully backup[ the memory to a Stick, then restore later (did I hear that correctly?). That makes up somewhat for the possible memory wipeout during a battery change, but it IS one more step (two actually) and so is a little inconvenient, but workable. BTW the only other PDA I have encountered that you can do this with (easy backup and restore via flash card) is the hard-to-find Handera 330. But believe me, it's well worth the effort if you can manage to find one!
    Since the SL10 has such high screen resolution, am wondering if they put any extra fonts in the Memo Pad? The Handera 330 has 5 fonts for Memo, the tiniest delivers 40 characters across. Sure you need magnifiers at my age to read it, but it's swell having a screen the size of an old 8-bit Atari or Commodore in the palm of your hand. Well that's something I'll find out when I dig up my old units! Thanks so much for the great video !!!

    • @HandheldComputing
      @HandheldComputing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I'm going to look at adding a capacitor for memory retention when changing the batteries on the SL10 (and would be interested to know if its an issue with yours). Sony really pushed the limits of what palm OS could do but sadly they still only have 3 fonts for memo pad!
      I will add the Handera 330 to my list of devices to look for, thanks for the suggestion!
      When it comes to Palm OS I generally use the M500/5 as the benchmark since it sits pretty much in the middle of Palm production and also has a memory card for backup and program storage :-)

      @HandheldComputing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, its a great size and the screen (as we would expect from Sony) was excellent but I struggled getting more than 5 hours on a pair of batteries. I thought it a real shame they hadn't added MP3 capabilities to the SL10!
