Fukuoka Airport, the gateway to Kyushu, is one of the main airports in Japan, with many travellers flying through via both domestic and international routes.
In this episode of Explore Oita Japan, we will show you a stress-free way to get from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata Station, and travelling from there on the limited express, "Yufuin no Mori".
Located on the ground floor of Fukuoka Airport's International Passenger Terminal Building, the Fukuoka Airport International Information Centre provides a wealth of information on sightseeing and transport links throughout Kyushu, so even first-time visitors to Japan can start their journey with confidence.
Fukuoka Airport has implemented thorough countermeasures against new coronavirus infections, and on Friday, February 26, 2021, it received certification under the Airport Health Accreditation (AHA) program conducted by the Airports Council International (ACI).
Fukuoka Airport is also served by express buses and local buses, providing smooth access to Yufuin, Beppu and Oita City.
This time, after departing from Fukuoka Airport Station, which is directly connected to the municipal underground, Haruka took the limited express train "Yufuin no Mori" at Hakata Station, the largest transport hub in Kyushu.
JR Kyushu sells a JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS for non-Japanese passport holders*, which allows you to travel on all JR Kyushu trains, including regular and rapid trains, as well as the Kyushu Shinkansen and limited express trains. It is a convenient and economical ticket option. You can travel around Kyushu with this ticket!
*Normally, this ticket is only available for foreign visitors to Japan with short-stay status, but until 31 March 2022, it will be available for all non-Japanese passport holders with relaxed conditions.
The Yufuin no Mori Express, on which Haruka boarded, is a popular sightseeing train with a chic green and gold body design, and the interior is wrapped in the gentle warmth of wood, creating a relaxing atmosphere.
As part of the train's unique hospitality, passengers can enjoy in-train announcements with local anecdotes and legends when the train approaches tourist attractions such as the two-stage waterfall "Jion no Taki" and Mt. Kirikabu.
In addition to original souvenir items, the train offers a variety of bento box lunches, desserts, and drinks made from local ingredients, mainly from Yufuin. You can enjoy the scenery from the train window while savouring some excellent local gourmet food. Some menus require reservations, so be sure to check the details in advance.
