I was about to search for more info about inversion, retrograde and retrograde inversion. Now it's clear for me. Thanks for explaining it. You're such a great teacher!!
Would you like to see me play? I could send you a video. Im not as good as you.... lol.... yet. But I am improving. Its hard to find time to jam between work and family.
Shredmaster Scott hey bro, i couldn’t figure out Instagram..... i sent it on FB Messenger. Lol... now that i have Instagram I’ll figure out how it use it eventually....
your Bach videos are amazing. after watching years of TH-cam guitar content, I believe that something original would be truly difficult to come by. But your take on teaching musicians how to think is fantastic. Bravo, you magnificent bastard.
This is very helpful. I must play all hundreds of riffs I made in retrogade etc just to check if they're better that way. If you take song suggestions I'd have few; Night's Blood - Dissection Mother North - Satyricon Inno A Satana - Emperor Incipit Satan - Gorgoroth My Journey To The Stars - Burzum En Vind Av Sorg - Darkthrone Seven Tears Are Flowing To The River - Nargaroth Antikrist - Dimmu Borgir Tyrants - Immortal Call From The Grave - Bathory Materialized In Stone - Marduk Hail Murder - Dark Funeral
Do you think Tony would have sounded much different if he had not lost his fingertips? I think his accident was a huge part of the development not only of his playing style, but of course the sound he created. Thanks for this deconstruct. I find this type of analysis has helped me really understand the songs I am learning.
Yes. He would sound fucking different. Because of his fingers he had to use thin strings. And because of those strings he had to use a fuckton of gain, creating the heavy metal sound.. If he would've had fingers, he would've had a more bluesy tone probably and they wouldn't have gone to create heavy metal
I just had to like this. I just love when people know what they're doing and giving their perspective of ideas and formulas that others left us, in order to analyze and incorporate that kind of knowledge into our playing and composition. I don't subscribe many accounts but yours surely deserves it. Congratz Ill see you in your future videos. Cheers
Hey man just found your channel very cool stuff, I like how you talk about a certain technique then show an example. Maybe try a video series like "Music theory for noobs" or something like that. You are a pretty good teacher man keep it going.
Can someone explain inversion to me? Is it just going the other way? For example, Ironman goes B to D which is two notes up in the scale. So to invert it, he played B to G which is two notes down instead. Is that right? So then from the D it goes to E (in the original) which is one note up in the scale, so from the G on the inversion you would go to F# (aka one note down)?
Holy Shit... I always thought the lyrics were in reference to a soldier who returned from Viet Nam and was treated like trash by civilians upon his return so he took out his vengeance on them. These were all assumptions of my own interpretation. Well, now I have to subscribe since this song singlehandedly made me the life long metalhead that I am. Killer videos SMS!
but Shred, C-D-E is a whole step each, but I know for a fact that C-B-A is a half step then a whole step. shouldn't it be C-Bb-Ab? I know it's out of key, but wouldn't you have to match the intervals inbetween your notes?
I like your channel brother, good content. Subbed. Thanks for helping me learn about theory too, I always struggled with it but you're the only person on TH-cam that actually teaches it in a way I understand Btw you kinda remind me of dimebag and zakk wylde haha 🤘
OK, I might get shot for this--but I want a fullblown Jazz cover of Iron Man now. That was bleeding EPIC. I also like your "Just ad 7th chords to everything" explanation of Jazz. It's not *un* true...
The upside down inversion actually made it sound heavier and would be great to experiment with those types of riffs man good job, some one should make a retrograde/Bach APP...before you laugh man, people make millions on apps.. I think Tommi played that song on the BOTTOM 2 strings (E/A) to get the heavier sound..(not b5 on the A/D strings etc) But who gives a shred...this concept is great
You can play it on different strings and play the same pitches. Like when you tune you match the open to the 5th fret of the above string. This applies all over the neck bro. Like 5E=0A, so 7E=2A etc.
Kickass video brother!! So if you play these rockin riffs backwards it opens up the portal of the prince of fuckn darkness and Ozzy pops up in your living room and does a live performance as you play the axe to all of black sabbath songs with biting off of bats heads and rabies shots and booze wild women and sacrifices of bunny rabbits because im fixin to crank my marty mcfly amp guitar steel pick and some black tooth grins to volume 13 and blow sum shit up???? Pretty cool. I think your definition of inversion is different from jazz inversions though. Like playing the riff off the full third chords. Maybe really cool?
I think you may be thinking of chord inversions? Inversion is the only thing I've ever heard the counterpoint technique called, but there are chord in versions in music theory as well, which are very common and totally different.
Ei’ríġ Proinsias Dammantaċ Ó Gamhna. You’re right I was thinking chord inversions. Like some kind of sixth chordal thing. Just a thought. I’m not gonna try it
Yes, it could be, but especially during Bach's time, inversions were mostly diatonic inversions, meaning that you would use the notes in the key scale when playing the inversion. If we decide we are in the key of C major, then the inversion of C D E is C B A, because you use the C major scale as the basis. But of course you don't have to use any scale as the basis of the inversion - you can just think purely in whole and half steps.
I'm no music theory connoisseur, but wouldn't the inversion of C-D-E be C-Bb-Ab, to keep the intervals the same? C-D-E is "full step / full step" whereas C-B-A is "full step / half step"... or am I talking out of my ass?
Great lesson shred. Theory is indeed a great tool to achieve sound you wanted from the instrument. And btw, that major variation is pretty dope tbh (don't shot me too, please 😂)
so... do we call it Bach Sabbath?
Black Sabbach?
Johan saabathtian bach
Nope it’s black yohan lol jk
Just came here to say that I was furious that he missed this pun opportunity!
*S t o p*
Holy shot the inverted part was heavy as hell
Sounded a little like those early 2000's riffs.
Was that the loudwire intro sound at 0:09
It’s the Final Cut sound 😉
no ones talking about this but 1:10 was the best guitar tone ive ever heard
I was about to search for more info about inversion, retrograde and retrograde inversion. Now it's clear for me. Thanks for explaining it. You're such a great teacher!!

I don't think most people know just how helpful guitar pro is at learning any instrument and/or just music as a whole.
Wow, the inverted and backward variations are great
Bruh you should do "poison was the cure" by megadeth ...like the theory behind it
I love that in major it sounds like a pop punk anthem.
your Bach videos are amazing. after watching years of TH-cam guitar content, I believe that something original would be truly difficult to come by. But your take on teaching musicians how to think is fantastic.

My Journey To The Stars - Burzum
En Vind Av Sorg - Darkthrone
Seven Tears Are Flowing To The River - Nargaroth
Antikrist - Dimmu Borgir
Tyrants - Immortal
Call From The Grave - Bathory
Materialized In Stone - Marduk
Hail Murder - Dark Funeral
The inversion sounds so good
The jazz one is pretty funny because jazz was a huge influence on Black Sabbath
Is it wrong I liked the jazzy iron man?
Just found your vids they're awesome 👍
Yes, its wrong. Stop liking it immediately! Jk

The jazz Iron Man reminds A National Acrobat.

that's awesome brother, appreciate you. I've got lots of theory videos. I like the idea of a series
You should have wayyyyyyy more subscribers. Keep up what you’re doing and people will flock.
thanks brother, spread the word!
Man, thank you so much, i now know howto approce this with my own riffs.
Shouldn't it be D7 in the jazz version? (Sounded pretty cool with the maj7, though).
Subbed af. Good shit
Other than that second note, the major version sounds good.
I would call this more of a reharmonization rather than deconstruction -- but whatever -- great video dude!
I post a lot of music theory content on instagram that doesn't make it to TH-cam. Get your shred fix below,

Wait a Minute. Isn't C-D-E Inversion is C-Bb-Ab? Like, Tone-Tone-Tone... Or I got it wrong?
