  • Thyroid cancer symptoms list and early warning signs of thyroid cancer. Learn how to identify thyroid cancer EARLY so you can get the best treatments.
This video is all about thyroid cancer symptoms and early warning signs you may have cancer.
This is a topic worth discussing because many people who believe they have thyroid cancer probably don't.
The good news is that even though thyroid cancer is fairly common, it has a great survival rate with a 5-year survival rate of around 98%.
So, even if you do have thyroid cancer, it's one of the better types of cancers to have.
An interesting fact about thyroid cancer is that it typically does NOT cause any symptoms. In fact, most people who are diagnosed with thyroid cancer present to their doctor with a normal exam and without any symptoms.
In some cases, however, if your cancer is sufficiently large then it may cause problems to nearby structures in your neck.
Your neck is a tight place which means that if anything grows in that area it may push on or bump into other structures which may result in symptoms.
With that in mind, if your cancer is large enough it may present with the following symptoms:
    - Compression of the esophagus or trachea
    - Difficulty swallowing -
    - Swelling or enlargement of the neck (bulge in the neck)
    - Changes to speech including hoarseness
    - Enlargement of lymph nodes in the neck
    - Symptoms of thyroid goiter
    - Pain in the neck, especially around the thyroid gland
    - Constant non-productive cough
It's important to note that in the majority of cases thyroid cancer will not cause problems with the production of thyroid hormone (but you should still have it tested to be sure).
Some other conditions may mimic thyroid cancer and you want to watch out for these as well.
    They include:
    - Thyroid Nodules
    - Thyroid Cysts
    - Goiter
    - Hashimoto's thyroiditis
These can be differentiated from thyroid cancer with an ultrasound test and certain blood markers.
If you suspect that you have thyroid cancer then your next steps should be:
    - Complete history and physical exam
    - Thyroid function lab tests (if you have symptoms such as fatigue, etc.)
    - Thyroid ultrasound
    - Biopsy (if necessary)
    - Iodine testing
    - Other blood tests such as inflammatory markers
These steps will help differentiate between thyroid cancer and the other conditions listed above.

I had a golf ball sized nodule on my thyroid, asked my doctor about it. She said yes you have a bump but we wait until it poops out. 😱 I left that practice. My ENT sent me for an ultrasound within 2 months I had it removed and it was cancerous. Please don’t wait until it “poops out”.

I know some doctors are not as expertise, but this takes the cake: I never heard any doctor say: let's wait until you poop it out, lol too funny. I'm not laughing about the cancer you have, rather some doctor telling any human patient that, knowing full well there are consequences after discovering a suspicious lump in someone's neck? I pray for your recovery🙏🙏🙏🙏

FYI, good video with good information. However, I had none of the symptoms reviewed in this video. My papillary carcinoma had metastisized to the left side lymph node and then metastisized to my neck cervical c6 and c7. Over some time I began to lose mobility on both arms and numbness down to both hands. Painful and scary. I went to ER to make sure I wasn't having heart issues. The nurse practicioner who attented me in ER, treated the symptoms as a back injury. Which I never mentioned an injury (pissed me off). I was then x-rayed on the left arm and shoulder and released with pain medications. It wasn't until my follow up visit with primary, who requested a chest x-ray. That is when we found the lesion on my C6-C7, followed by more testing MRI, CT, Ultrasound, PET scan, lymph node and thyroid biopsy. This was the confirmation I had a malignancy lesion and had to get to surgery as soon as possible. Since, then I have had the tumor removed and recovering well, with 100% mobility and have to wear a neck brace for 3 months. My thyroidectomy is scheduled for later this week and my venture will continue with radiation therapy after surgery. Moral of the story is don't always go by the most common symptoms. Be pro-active with your doctors and if you have too, get a second opinion. God Bless.

Just reading this now, and everything you’ve reviewed pretty much happened to me, but I didn’t have any of the obvious markers such as swelling or painful lymph nodes. My docs found out through the biopsy and iodine scans; fortunately the cancer was caught early on, so the option for a complete removal was taken as a preventative measure from it spreading further. I ended up getting a complete thyroidectomy, but the ENT surgeon at the time was caught completely by surprise when trace amounts of cancer were found on my trachea during the operation 😳 I guess that doesn’t happen often (?) Also did the ablative treatment (all 7 days!) so the whole experience was a rollercoaster. I think this happened over a period of 4 months, and all this started because I was having difficulty swallowing.
Anyway, I’m really enjoying your content, thank you so much for sharing your information! It’s been incredibly helpful.

My endocrinologist said she could tell if a nodule was cancerous or not. She said if you have cancer, the nodules are hard. If they are soft, you most likely do not have cancer. I had half my thyroid removed last August. No cancer was found. My nodules were soft.

Dr. Westin Childs: This is general the rule of thumb as far as finding out someone has a nodule in thier thyroid, but not always the case? My father died senseless, and was in a great deal of suffering at the age of 64, he passed, and even had falls from it. He had Medullary Thyroid Cancer that went to his lung, finally to his brain. The problem for 3 years he complained, and they knew he had a nodule in his thyroid from ultra-sound but, decided to wait and see for 3 years? He was given 6 months to live, no treatment offered because it was advanced to far. My oldest brother: same age died of Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer at 64, they never found it until his final Autopsy, the medical examiner was so distraught by what she had seen, wondered why was it not detected before: he has full medical records showing that regular check ups were made every 6 months, I can show you gruesome pictures of him, he never looked like the same person: he has multiply nodules in his thyroid, face was disfigured from it, they found up to 10 cm nodules around his heart, lungs were covered in masses. I'll be 61 in December 2022 this year: I've had my fight with thyroid cancer: my endocrinologist refused to have an ultrasound done until I gave him proof from my father and brother, he said he felt a nodule on my left thyroid, still refused to do an ultrasound: 6 months later he told me to come back because my calcium in my blood was as high as 15, I had and still have constant bone pain, my kidneys were acting up and my blood pressure were going higher from unknown causes because I work out daily and eat a very good balanced diet. I took him the results of my father and brother medical report to him: He finally says this: you need an ultrasound on your thyroid, the results were back 3 months later: he keeps telling me no Cancer, no Cancer but say yes, you do have a nodule measuring 8 cm, then tells me I need an FNA Biopsy, he tells me the results may take up to 2 weeks: my VA doctor calls me 2 days later on a friday: she says: you need a lobedectomy to remove your left thyroid, followed by removal of your right thyroid later? I said what?! She instructs me to come into the VA clinic to get the report to take to my endocrinologist. I find out later my VA doctor quit her position that same Friday after giving me the results? I'm really confused and now extremely depressed: not from my results but, to lose my doctor was too much on me. My results from the Bethseda says: a Follicular indifferent thyroid carcinoma 94%. My endocrinologist tells me I need surgery: in his report, he says: if Cancer full removal of thyroid, if not just remove the left thyroid? He put a doubt in the surgeons mind, I also show the surgeon that I had knots in my exterior lateral part of my left neck and a knot on the base back left part of my skull: he exclaims: this is not related to your thyroid? I'm really upset and confused now? He instructs me to have the surgery ASAP, I said not so fast?! He then tells me if I don't have the surgery the VA cannot help me and they may deny my medical coverage? So, I go through with the surgery: I'm scheduled for 11am surgery.....everything is done, my labs, Echocardiogram. I'm still in holding area and waiting for my surgeon to arrive: its now 3:30pm, finally he checks in with me at 5:18pm and apologizes for being late, and tells me he is doing another patient ahead of me? They finally wheel me in the OR at 6pm, 10 minutes later I'm completely out. I was see up at 6:30pm or 18:30hrs. I'm discharged at 7pm or 19:00 hrs. I'm alert and walking out, the nurse told me she never seen someone wake up and be discharged as fast after this kind of procedure, she was shocked, as I was too. Im still dealing with bone pain, higher calcium, urinating frequently, meanwhile after asking my endocrinologist why I was never tested for RET or mutated gene that could run in my family: he says we will do that February 2023, I said why s long? I now have a new solid nodule on my right thyroid, a lung mass in my left lung they are monioring? Really!!? This is good information, however I want people to read my true and factual statements, why can't I get the help I need? I feel like I'm beating a dead 🐎 horse? I know the ATA has new guidelines but, where is the help if no one is trying?

I'm 25 yr old female, I have an history of hypothyroidism (under active.) I also have a small nodule on the left side of thyroid. Lately I've had several lymph nodes in my neck & arm pit swell up. I sweat way too much, excess weight loss. Headaches. Dizziness. My meds were cut back from 50 mcg to 25 mcg. ( i was on the 50 mcg for 5 years.) Friday I went in to get blood work for my thyroid, they took 6 tubes of blood from me.

I was just diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer, my symptoms are all over the place so they couldn't figure it out... until they finally saw that it was growing quickly! 6mm in April, 8mm in June then 4 weeks later the US showed 1.1cm. I'm extremely nauseous , extreme anxiety and Insomnia. I've lost over 50lbs, hair loss, dry skin, sweating profusely and other things. They did a TSH which was low. It all started at vertigo and nystagmus? I started seeing my ENT in 2020! Hopefully, it's not that advanced...

Could a benign nodule cause severe pain in the neck or would this indicate a stronger likelihood for malignancy? Do my symptoms warrant a visit to the E.R. to be seen sooner (since I was told there’s a 2.5 month wait to see an Endocrinologist)?
What if I had an ultrasound 1.5 years ago that was .7 cm’s in size. Then when I got an ultrasound over 1 year ago it was 1 cm in size. It was rated as T4 at that time (mostly solid with vascularity).
About 4 weeks ago I started having pain in the front of my neck that woke me up at night (lasted one week and then went away). Then the last 3 days I started having that pain again but it was much more severe.
I called the Endocrinologist to schedule an appt and the earliest Appt is 2.5 months out! The person I spoke with said for me to go to the ER if I don’t want to wait that long.
The symptoms I’ve been having is: severe pain pushing on my neck, pain and pressure on my voice box making it hurt to talk, occasional swallowing problems, and slight burning pain in that part of the as of today. A few times I felt the need to cough from the pain also.

I have a thyroid nodule on my left side about the size of a grape. All tests are normal. It’s not really giving me any problems other than a slight bulging in my neck. Just had a terrible cold/flu twice close to each other and it does make me wonder if it’s the thyroid causing immunity problems.
I’m going for a fresh round of blood test in a few days by my doctors request even though my results are in the normal range. So guess he’s keeping an eye on me. Only thing I have before the two lots of colds is a cough that I’ve had for months and bone pain at my C7 at the back of my neck and my ALP from liver function test was outside the normal range but not hugely high. I’m a breast cancer survivor now 5.5 years and I’m 56 years old.
So any lumps and bumps alarm me out but as it’s rare to have thyroid cancer and survival is good I’m not freaking out that much. So it’s fingers crossed all will be fine. 🤞

I’m looking at a full thyroidectomy in the near future. Do you have to get a breathing tube In surgery and a urinary catheter (both things I can’t stand). Do surgeons trim any excess skin on the neck due to the incision and removal of a huge goiter that can be seen and has pushed out/stretched the skin. Thank you. I’m super fearful of the operating room 😕

I'm going in Tuesday morning for a consult. I have a large lump on my neck which was ignored by the VA for several years. They said it was just fat. Well, that wasn't the case. Besides, how could someone be fat on one side of the neck. After I got recommended to a civilian doctor he had a fit. I have a large nodule in there, caught by an ultrasound. I'm trying not to think about it.

My neck looks really ugly because of the swollen thyroid. It doesn’t seem to be 4mm larger to me, it’s almost 1/2 inch larger both right and left side. I have had a thyroid (nodule?) for some time now, as a matter of fact I have an appointment in December because they said it really needed to be looked at again. It was fairly large a year ago and I didn't even know it was there, now my voice changes sporadically and it's very noticeable. I can literally feel it in my throat now..(also I have lupus sle,) when they first biopsied it he said it did have the size, blood flow and calcification that he was concerned about but biopsy was negative and I was supposed to come back every 3 months but lost insurance and couldn't,.it's been a year and I'm worried.. should I be? And I also found out yesterday that thyroid problems run on my mother's side of the family. If anyone can help set my mind at ease or at least let me know that I should actually put a fire under my rear I'd appreciate it. Also they said it may have to come out anyway because of the size and the fact that it is growing and like I said I can definitely tell it has grown and people point out the voice changes now..

Thyroid tumours don't all present as a "lump", as my mother had a 15cm long helix type tumour around her trachea. Doctors ingnored her for 3yrs. Most Drs practices (in the UK) don"t run a full panel, and my mothers tests have always come back normal, even at the point of surgical intervention.

    • @drwestinchilds
      @drwestinchilds  5 ปีที่แล้ว

A 15cm mass would be hard to miss if anyone actually examined her thyroid with or without imaging. Small nodules can hide posteriorly but this isn't true for most other nodules. This seems like more of an issue with the doctors that were treating her as opposed to her presentation.

    • @kiwipics
      @kiwipics 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@drwestinchilds ... The helix shape or form wasn't a "lump", and imaging wasn't run by Drs / specialists or the NHS until the last minute. The tumour was wrapped around the windpipe.
I've been going through a similar experience myself, and find the medical profession to be lacking in their ability to put two and two together.

    • @drwestinchilds
      @drwestinchilds  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@kiwipics I don't disagree with your assessment regarding the capability of modern medicine. The profession has become so fragmented that even simple things get missed. The PCP is supposed to be the person who maintains a big picture but more often they have just become a punter to sub-specialists without any real skin in the game, so to speak. It's far easier to "pass the patient" than it is to apply critical thought.

This is a good video. I was told that I have two thyroid nodules. On ultrasound, one was classified as suspicious and the other as highly suspicious with TI-RADS scores of 4 and 7 respectively. A FNA wasn’t done because the highly suspicious nodule is too close to my CCA. I’m constantly clearing my throat because I feel like something is there, but I also feel like I’ve fallen through the cracks. My questions are should I be worried about the highly suspicious nodule being cancer? Should I push my doctor or am I being paranoid? Thank you.

Nothing medication for this yet started. I'm iron deficient quite low upto 45. Take iron pills and smoothies with carrot beet root. My thyroid biopsy was booked on February 28 but it couldn't be done as technician said it's the job done by radiologist. So postponed. My major problem is I get liquid type saliva contains blood colour and sometimes tiny blood pieces. Tests r done twice but they couldn't find anything serious. Everyday after wake up when I spit, I see blood in my sputum cum saliva. I've stopped eating cruciferous vegetables and made changes in my diet. An FNA was done that came back benign and left me the better a week until I reoovered but I do know FNA's are not always right . My Question is this. the type of thyroid cancer that is the rarest with Pain in the neck, what other symptoms are specific to that type of Cancer ?

I am 34 I have a history of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma when I was 18 with chemo and radiation to the neck and chest. I found some nodules on both sides of my neck, had an ultrasound and biopsy. One showed Hurthle cells the other side follicular neoplasm. The doctor said they can’t tell for sure if it’s thyroid cancer unless they remove my thyroid. I don’t want my thyroid removed if I don’t have cancer. Is there any other way to tell if it’s cancer without removing the thyroid?

Cancer arises from specific cells so if there are no thyroid cancer cells present then you can't really get thyroid cancer. You can however get cancer in any cell in your body so you still could get cancer in the neck even if you don't have a thyroid.

For me in 2012 I went for an annual gynecologist exam. She felt around my neck, it was enlarged. Long story short in less than 2 weeks I was diagnosed with papillary carcinoma in both sides. My symptoms were hoarseness, trouble swallowing, wheezing, etc. Had total thyroidectomy. 8 months later spread in my lymph nodes because the quack endocrinologist I had (who by the way ended up fleeing the state due to multiple law suits & no wonder)didn't properly check iodine levels & other tests prior to me receiving radioactive iodine treatment. The doctor's who treated me the second time were appalled by this! Advocate for yourself & research yourself!! Get the best quality care you possibly can. I did have untreated thyroid issues several years prior. The endocrinologist I had prior wasn't concerned with my borderline numbers & horrible symptoms.
