I did the same with a PAX gents saw about three years ago and modified the hang quite a bit so I had a saw set up specifically for cutting half-blind DT’s (I work really high when dovetailing since I use a bench on bench moxon). They’re super cheap, sharpenable, and made with 0.015 plate. Really a great investment; they’re about ~$40 USD now. Thanks for the content brother 👍
Thanks! I rather like the look as well! The regimentation of the layers are pretty unforgiving with regards to making it super tidy but it’s definitely doable
Impulse hardened teeth. You won't be able to re sharpen/ set that saw and expect it to stay sharp for long. But for 5 squid it is fine as a user until blunt then chuck it in the bin and buy another. Good part is it is perfect to practice your handle making and not screw up an expensive saw.
Excellent video, just what I need to make. I have been thinking of sharpening hardpoint saws with a very small diamond swiss file/needle file. Thanks very much indeed, I really enjoyed it. Jack
I double sharpening would work with this particular Saw, and the eagle angle is completely off. The other saw in the description is a much better option
Nice job Dean - not sure how robust the tapered ends of the curved parts will be, but I really like the look of the plywood, especially once you'd oiled it up. Much prettier than a plain chunk of hardwood and like you said it'll be good and stable. All the best mate. 👍
Dean, looks like you are feeling pretty good today! I like that handle and customizing tools like that makes them easier to use and I believe we get better results too.
Definitely on the to-do list. My only question is, with using the original oversized kerf, wouldn't the slot be too wide/loose to grip the blade properly? Or did the plywood have enough give once the bolts were tightened to provide good contact?
I imagine you could do, but a pistol grip on a harder working tenon Saw may not be great. I would suggest reshaping the handle to perfectly fit your hand with files and sandpaper, if you actually need to. Softening harsh corners and adding a curve here and there can make a huge difference

Thanks for watching SMEAC, and great to hear you did the same thing!
Great video great idea
Cheers!
Nice job. Handy budget saw. Thanks for sharing.
Don't know about others, but I like the look of the plywood. Might have to make one myself out of ply.

The new saw handle looks really good. :)
The handle that you cut off could still be useful for a file perhaps?
Definitely, it’s in my ‘useful for something’ pile lol
Nice project. Why didn’t you cut the slot in the new handle before you cut the old handle off? Might have been easier
Plywood handle makes sense for stability and expense. Quality plywood looks nice in my opinion. Technically it is birch. ;)
What a fun project! Really nice result Dean. I have a cheap saw with a HORRIBLE handle, so I think I will try to replicate your efforts.
Go for it!

Exactly, a solid experience that I’ll definitely revisit in the future

Nice to see you looking so chipper and moving freely - excellent tip for budget tool
Thanks! I paid for it for a couple of days afterwards!
Great video !!! Thank You 😊😊😊😊😊😊😇😇😇😇😇😇
Thank you too!
Nice work Dean.
Thanks Steve

Cheers! I was in a lot of pain for a few days afterwards, but was totally worth it!
nice one Dean!

The kerf width wasn’t an issue at all 😊
