    Since Turing designed the A.C.E., I think it's quite appropriate that they put a computer chip in the window instead of a building. I like it, but that's just my opinion!

    This video was a mad race against the clock to find the note on release day, get home, film, edit and upload! I somehow managed it, although slightly later than I normally upload. • @trace9657
      @trace9657 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Cambutalgirl Daniel is right, it was kept a secret because the Brits did not want to give away the intel. While Turing was the master mind, he was part of a team. Cracking the enigma was not a one man operation, as such the decision to keep the work a secret was not related to one man. I am historian, and the Bletchley story actually upset some people because there was always some mystique around knowing where the Germans were going to strike. There was a sense of divine intervention or special military prowess around The Second World War, a "Right makes Might," type of perspective. After the intelligence was released it was more, "oh they knew because they cracked the codes." Believe, me it did add a whole new element into the studies of The Second World War. Many people felt it undermined the sacrifices made in the field. I disagree with that, defeating the Nazis took a combination of intellect and grit from people of many nations.
      That said, what happened to Turing afterward is unforgivable, and I wish he and the others could have been appreciated in their time.

      also many people not getting into college due to allocations due to gender or race rather than for the people who actually pay or deserve it more due to their grades, people saying oh well you are the best person to be here but sorry we have too many white people here so you cant get in and now going to someone else due to the sjkin colour. That is the definition of racism you can say its good all you like but it is racism doing something for someone good or bad due to skin colour and not about "the content of their character" a little quot from martyn luther king there, go look what he said and see if skin colour should be used for awarding things etc.
      This is how it starts and its ramping up constantly due to people believing this madness, i dont blame gay or other ethnicities as its actually do gooders white straight people pushing this nonsense mostly trying to be good but not realising its gonna end in disaster

      It's still glossed over! There's a lot more to it and much of the story goes unsaid. Turing was in fact attracted to young boys. He "adopted" a young jewish refugee by the name of Robert Augenfeld, whom he sponsored to go to public school. He made advances towards the boy, who was fourteen, but was rebuffed.
      A friend of his, Robin Gandy, called on Turing one day and asked if he could borrow a book. Turing took it off the shelf, and out fluttered a newspaper picture of a rank of pageboys at Princess Elizabeth’s wedding, to which Turing said ‘You’ll find nice pages like that in my books.’
      The truth is that he was becoming a bit of an embarrassment and the incident for which he was arrested (with a young adult man) allowed the authorities to take action (offer chemical castration) to curb his impulses and protect children without totally upsetting the apple cart.

      Someone's sexual proclivity should have no bearing whatsoever on how we view their achievements - it would have made no difference to his work at Bletchley, and why should it? It's just how nature made him (as it made the rest of us one way or another!).

      You are absolutely right - sources should be examined and the motives behind accounts critically assessed. The book was a New York Times best seller ("One of the best scientific biographies ever written") and universally acclaimed, so I think we can be pretty sure the author had done his homework!
      Gandy's account of the pageboy picture incident is also given (by him) in a 1990s BBC documentary on Turing, so anyone can see the account being given first hand and make an independent assessment as to its validity.
      In any case, why should it worry you what his sexual inclinations were?
      No-one chooses their sexuality; it's just what nature gave Turing, just as it does for everyone else. It doesn't define him. I thought we'd got over all that in this day and age.
