Hey Blake, a great way to understand the language on menus or at shops etc is on Google translate have it on Dutch to English and then use the photo feature so then it gives you the exact same photo but the whole menu etc is in English .

I don't get how you are this unprepared when you move to another country for work and living... not even a simple translate app, not having a basic list of words you need most (like what the Dutch words for your food are). Amazing. You do know we all also speak english right? we don't bite, you can ask things.

Just ask the people if you are unsure or are looking for something specific. 90% of the population will speak at least a basic level of English. And those translate apps nowadays are often "point with camera, read translation" Welcome to the Netherlands, enjoy your time. Rmember, we are a country of work hard and then take the time to play harder. (Work life balance and such), not work work work.
