  • Beth Hurley of Norwell is a hospice nurse who provides compassionate care with dignity and eases pain for people with serious and often terminal illnesses. She knows what its like both as a nurse with the Norwell VNA and Hospice, and also as a family member. She received hospice help about 15 years ago when two of her brothers were dying of AIDS in a Boston hospice home. That experience changed her life and led her to become a hospice nurse.
I was emotionally depleted, and I dont know what we could have done without that wonderful hospice home. Our brothers could die with dignity, without pain and with their family all around them.

The first hospice that opened up was in London, England in the 1950's. I am so glad your brothers were well taken care of. Your story is truly quite spellbinding.

My husband died a few days ago from ALS. Hospice was fantastic and kept my husband informed about what they would do and let him know HE was in charge of how much morphine he wanted or didn’t want. He opted for a very small dose twice a day bc his breathing was compromised as is. His mind was sharp til the end and although he slipped away suddenly alone at 6 in the morning hospice was there fast and was amazing. These people are angels on earth. I can’t say enough great things about them. They are priceless. It’s definitely what I’d want at the end of my life.

My condolences to you and your family. Living in a nursing home when I need palliative care I'd like to leave and go to hospice. We have palliative care residents and staff eat the residents food in front of them, and watch their tv. That's disgusting and never should that happen. I'm sad I cant do anything for them because of covid 19. But may God bless them.

Am a retired nurse. The dying are given morphine because it blunts the respiratory drive giving them relief. Hospice are not murderers but angels giving the dying peace.. Is that not a precious act or would you rather your loved one gasp and struggle. God understands why can't you?.

I just went through hospice with my mother and thank goodness for the morphine. I think it helped us watching and witnessing as much, or more than it helped her. If they hastened her death, it was a blessing because her quality of life was unbearable. I'm so grateful.

For those of yall making uneducated comments about dehydrating and starving patients you need to educate yourself on the dying process itself. If you knew better, you would know that the body shuts down organs and since dying is a process the body has ZERO desire to digest food, as all systems are beginning to fail. Educate yourself before making conspiracy theories. For those of you who work hospice care, for all that you do, THANK YOU!

      @ Tranquility
I may be wrong, but I feel a sense of sarcasim in your comment. My uncle passed of a complex form of blood cancer. He was not on any form of opiates or meds because he was not in pain, but his body began to fail over months. His appetite declined significantly over the last weeks of his life, and during the last two days he had NO interest in food or drink, we placed ice cjops in his mouth. I feel your comment is disrespectful to those who experience the "natural state" ones body subcumbs to at the time of death. And for those who do need support of opiate/other forms of meds to help mitigate the pain they are experiencing, so be it. It allows them pass in a less painful way.

You Sweetheart! I, myself, have done what you do and when you said " you take more than you give" you could NOT have more more correct. Yes, it IS a very tough and tiring occupation but (trying to not be egotisitcal here) I think some of us are very blessed that we can handle this type work. Thank you so much for your video!

I understand that people have had both positive and negative experiences with hospice. Our family's experience was very positive. For those of you who think that hospice starves and dehydrates people, educate yourself with how the human body functions when organs are shutting down. As for morphine, who would ever want to be opposed to the use of this drug. It helps. In our experience, they also used Methodone for pain management. Thank you to every hospice nurse out there!! I personally apologize for those who are leaving rude and ignorant comments.

I am a certified Nursing assistant and I see dying patient almost every month or so, no one in their right mind whould starve a dying patient, common sense will tell you most of the time when one is very sick you dont want anything to eat, people need to stop been negative about hospic, we are a caring community.

You are a nursing "assistant." Not a MD or even RN. If you put a person on strong pain killers they lose their appetite. Perhaps they take advantage of people like you and the volunteers. I've seen what they do first hand. I saw what they did to my Dad. What do you think happens when they take people off of medications they need to live (blood pressure, diabetes, etc.)? Do you homework. You seem to be a descent person who is unaware.

My mother passed from cancer in '99. My sister, Dad, and I were there with her. A hospice person came into the room and started fussing about what mom was wearing, how bad she looked and why my mom couldn't move without having pain (mom had a morphine pump from the hospital). I didn't like her attitude and the way she handled my mother. I saw her that one time and I'll never forget her.

I am all for hospice care but like a 911 operator it is not a job that just anyone can do. It is as much psychological as physical and you have to really want to do it. It isn't one of those jobs where you have a bunch of children and the father(s) ran off so you need a job or to get a paycheck. It is an extremely important job. Loved ones do have to understand though, that hospice is for terminally ill patients and you are trying to comfort and ease their pain. Sadly, they are going to pass away. God bless hospice care.

No doubt the nurses do their job but my experience is that Hospice does indeed hasten the death. Especially when the patient has become a deficit to the bottom line. They overdosed my Mother with Seroquil a week after she WALKED in. She was the comatose and on a catheter. Easier to manage in that state. They then deprived her of food and water and told me that she was given 100 mg of Seroqil when she only should have been given 25 mg. I like the gullible person I was believed they were trying to work out her medication. Not for profit Hospice that is pro-life is good Hospice. The problem is where can one find one. It's not just Hospice bet care facilities and hospitals can advocate the same protocol. It is not conspiracy theory. It really dose happen. My Mother deserved a natural death. I as her guardian now live with the guilt of making decisions that led to this traumatic experience at the end of her life. I can only warn people of what I've learned the hard way. It IS stealth euthanasia.

I Agree 100% ..This is not a Natural Death..i feel the same way you do..Guilty n i will never forgive myself for letting Hospice come take my brother who had stage 4 throat cancer..he was doing better at home ..they overdosed him with morphine n ativan n starved him..just too make 30,000 from medicare. So sorry for your lost..

I'm very sorry but Riverside in calif. hospice for us was a nightmare! It was with uncaring nurses, We had to drive through an old cemetery to get there, it looked like a cleaned up Adams family home in a way just no cobwebs! they act as your putting your loved one in a resort. its there for them to die, I'm sorry 6 people died that night including my mom, so what about that? I just had a bad experience is all no disrespect to anyone...

    • @maxwellalberts7332

You seem very mixed up. People go to hospices specifically TO DIE. ("So what about that?" Drive through an old cemetery? Were there no roads? Are you a crazy person?

My Mother & Father chose home Hospice for their end of life care. I moved in with my Dad after my Mom passed to help him through the process. I also have a brother who passed in Hospice care.
As far as Euthanasia. I get your point, but so what if the process cost money? Seriously, that's acting like it's a waste. Can you quantitate a life? If a person is totally alone, with none who cares they can still make a friend. I can't imagine a situation where they can't effect another life somehow.

If you truely love the person that's passing on please do not put them in hospice or you will regret that for the rest of ur life .Hospice are plain & simple legal killers & their job is to give as much as they can morphine to these patience .Watching some1 die of morphine overdose is a horrible to watch ur loved ones to go out like that .Her brother lived for a month after going in there so just consider him 1 of the very few lucky ones that make it that long in that place .Her other brother lasted for 2 weeks & that's not bad of a time neither cause they usually try to get them passed on within the first week there if they r in 1 of these hospice hospitals .Believe this or not alot of people r put there & they go in walking .talking & eating but that don't last long at all cause they start them off rite away with morphine & then more & more everyday until the end .It is a horrible way to watch a loved 1 die it truely is .Ask anybody that has had a loved 1 in these places .
