      Thinking a more flexible material would help your project. Something stiff enough to return to its original shape on its own, but able to collapse or take on a shape created by the pressure applied by the base of the saw when doing miter cuts. So that the obstruction it becomes would become a non-issue because it would simply take on a new shape from the applied outside force, yet still be function able. Consider the same material used in the tip of that blue dust collection connector 1.53. You can squeeze that all day, it will always return to its original shape.

    I love my bosch miter saw, because of the front slide action. With a small shop area ,it's a must have. But even with an extra vac hose by the saw, it's still dust everywhere.
    You my friend , have another sale, thank you for this much needed product.

    Just installed your "Bosch Dust Collection Chute" ...all I can say is OUTSTANDING! Incredible quality parts and hardware, perfect fit, and extremely easy to install with your installation video..And now, testing. I did 10 cuts on a 2x4 with the stock chute and small vacuum. (My stock set-up.) Gathered up all the sawdust and it basically fit in the palm of my hand. After installing your "Bosch Dust Collection Chute" and making another 10 cuts, I may have had a teaspoon full! OMG what a difference! I am so glad I purchased this, my shop is half of a two car garage and was dreading making a dust box for the saw. I HIGHLY recommend this UPGRADE to everyone with a Bosch 12" glide saw. Thanks Travis, am one step closer to...."SHOP GREATNESS!"

      The comparison at around 11:30 is not really reasonable - with the standard dust collection (before) he is making an end cut, with his "improved" version a crosscut (after), knowing that a end cut is the most difficult one for the dust collection.

      @@l.k.1011 I agree, after shooting that was the closest similar angle I could get between original and improved. This is why I also showed the general state of the saws after all cuts as well, because that is reality. I did end cuts in all tests.

    I bought the one that's offered on Etzy and received it today. I'm very impressed! My journey looking for a dust collection improvement for my 12" Bosch started about 15 years ago. I bought plans from Dan Patterson to make a larger boot but still plenty of dust was thrown out the back. Then I built the smallest box around the saw that I could for full function (with a 4" port to my DC) but the saw with the box on the gravity base is top heavy and easy to tip when moving the stand and the stand can't collapse. Better used for a permanent spot.
    The boot collar design is awesome! The key is the wide rubber boot, larger collection area, and the elimination of the OEM skinny bent tubing that restricts CFM. Really cool how the design marries up with the removed OEM dust boot screw holes, which makes this boot solidly attached and as close to the blade as practical.
    This dust boot looks like it should have been there on a new GCM12SD from the get go. Bosch should pay a licensing fee and add this to their saw. Bosch would sell more GCM12SD units with this boot included. Maybe this push some Festool buyers their way!
    The GCM12SD is a fantastic miter saw. I'm on my second one!

      I’m happy to see someone who has one gives it a good review. I bought mine mid-December and just got the shipping notification today. I’ll try to post a video review of it when I get it installed. I agree with you, if it works, then Bosch should set this guy up for life, as there will now be a saw that can compete in the same dust collection arena as the Festool. If the word gets out in the proper arenas that this works, it’s almost guaranteed to boost their sales dramatically. Dust collection was a consideration when I bought my Bosch, but I had to settle for the lesser of the evils. This will take it from being the best of the worst…to the best of all the name brands. I try to keep my shop as clean as possible and it drives me nuts using the miter saw because of all my tools, it’s the one with the worst dust collection. Personally, I would love to see someone do a comparison between this on a Bosch and the Festool Kapex saw. Thanks for the review, it was a relief seeing it.

    • @bobbray9666
      @bobbray9666 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Update: I ordered another one due to my bad of chopping off an inch or less of a 1x2 hardwood piece and lifted the blade immediately after the cut. The short piece caught the blade and launched into the dust chute and shattered it. So just a reminder to allow the blade it stop before lifting on short cutoffs, as short cutoffs can become high speed bullets. I think these dust chutes are 3D printed, so not sure if a better polymer used would prevent this.

    • @bobbray9666
      @bobbray9666 ปีที่แล้ว

      2nd update: I ordered a replacement. Same thing happened and I'm going back to the OEM vacuum boot. $100+ down the drain.
      The problem is that the boot assembly is very close to the blade to catch the dust coming off the cut but that also leaves a big backstop anytime you raise the blade before a complete blade stop after a cut. The OEM boot would allow a cutoff piece to slide backward harmlessly upon raising a spinning blade but this boot causes the cutoff piece to slide backward, hit the boot housing and bounce back into the spinning blade.
      Not recommended. I bet miter saw manufacturers that looked at this product would laugh and say that they abandoned this type of close to blade design for this reason.
      I thought this design would last if the boot housing was made of metal but then, by not shattering, the cut off piece would potentially become an incoming projectile to your body after the cutoff slides backward, hits the housing, bounces back into the blade and then violently bounces off the non shattering boot housing.
      I have never experienced a cutoff hitting a the spinning blade of my Bosch miter saw until I used this boot. Unless you religiously allow the spinning blade to stop before lifting, forget this product. Maybe if Bosch had a brake that stopped the blade from spinning quickly after releasing the trigger, this would be a non issue. Or you need to make sure your fence is set at a zero clearance so a cutoff can't slide backwards, which the OEM fence doesn't offer.
      I am disappointed that this boot was not my solution to the bad dust collection of my Bosch saw. Nice try but this needs a second design thought for practicality use.

    If suction could be added to the base in the slot of the clearance plate I believe it would improve dust collection. Kinda like a downdraft table for sanding.

    • @ShopNation
      @ShopNation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      You would think so, but due to the blade rotation and angle of the teeth, there is really no dust forced in that lower cavity. Everything that ends up there is falling from somewhere else. I had a similar thought when I first started tackling these issues.

    • @polerin
      @polerin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly what I am planning is a small (tilted) downdraft behind the saw as well, which I think might be more useful for capturing the dust that escapes collection at source

    • @ottoknottnerus6706
      @ottoknottnerus6706 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The velocity of the air is made by the blade and bottom suction would reduce the direction of the air that is carrying the dust, this would make the system less effective. As an engineer I would suggest you smooth all the corners to streamline the airflow as it moves into the device. the sharp edges are causing turbulence reducing the air to carry the dust.(look at your fluids books from school) Smooth air will carry higher amounts of dust, so get rid of the corners and smooth them out with a healthy radii.

      I also can't wait for the Dewalt version. I just picked up a DW779 with free stand and have been messing with the dust collection. I added flashing tape to the flexible shroud so now it doesn't close in on itself and for some weird reason Dewalt put holes along the top of that black pipe that holds the shroud. I taped that up along with any small openings I could see to have maximum airflow running all the way to the front of the shroud

Although very partial to Bosch tools as my shop is full of them, I had heard some negative comments about Bosch's articulating arm not holding true, ended up with DeWalt 717. When it arrived it was obviously a resale - it was loose in the box, no internal packing, literally bouncing around with a hole where the handle had broken through. I had little hope for it but was astoundingly perfect out of the box, so to speak. The 717 dust control isn't too bad with a vac on it as is. But I'd love to see what you come up with for DeWalt. Thanks, great video! - PS, I subscribed because I like how you do your videos. Straight forward, no BS, no music, well articulated.

    Would love to see you tackle the Milwaukee M18 10” mitre saw. The saw is a slider and the blade slides and leaves the collection point at the back of the saw! At full extension your blade is almost 10’ away from the collection. Would love to see what you could do with it.

    I have an old Makita sliding mitre saw and set up a nice new workshop a few years ago. I use the standard dust chute and after some experimenting, found that the biggest improvement in dust collection was achieved simply by sliding the saw all the way towards me pulling it right down and making the cut using the slide, eg front to back.

    As another mechie, try lining the inside with felt or another elastic collision absorber. The best would have been that elastic diaphragm (dental dam) that was used in router dust shields a while back.

    Looking at how much dust follows the original collection path even with the suction removed I would suggest you try going smaller, surrounding the blade as much as possible to focus the vacuum and give it as much suction as possible. Keep a flap to slow down anything going wildly off course and give the vacuum a chance to catch it. As much air speed as possible being drawn past the blade should help and that requires a smaller apature so long as the shop vac doesn't struggle. But small that is in practice and how that works out in the real world is another matter...It would be cool to have the chute work in every possible use though.

    I received the Shop Nation attachment today for my Bosch 12” miter saw. It was an easy, 10 minute installation. It works as advertised! Very little dust is now escaping collection. Fit, finish, and looks of the attachment are top notch!
    I do have a design consideration. My corrugated Dustright, 1.75” hose is catching on the top of the fence when performing sliding cuts, even when the fence is extended all the way out. It probably wouldn’t happen if I had one of those swanky Festool hoses. 😊This is due to the angle where the hose attaches to the shroud. The angle needs to be changed slightly, so that the dust collection hose exits more toward the rear of the saw.
    I am still very happy, and will rig up a work around.
