- Ang Mo Kio is a planning area and residential town situated in the North-East region of Singapore. The name “Ang Mo Kio” has an interesting origin: it literally means the “red-haired man’s bridge.” The term “ang mo” is colloquial for a Caucasian person. The name refers to a bridge over the Kallang River in the area, which was built by Johnson Turnball Thomson, the Government Surveyor of the Straits Settlement from 1841 to 1853.
Before urbanization, Ang Mo Kio was largely undeveloped, primarily used for agricultural purposes. The land consisted of uninhabited plots covered in dense secondary forest or swamps. However, in 1973, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) redeveloped the area as their seventh satellite town. It was the first town to be built in metric dimensions and was fully completed by 1980. Ang Mo Kio became home to the first three town councils in Singapore in 1986, as part of a pilot project to better serve residents of HDB new towns. This concept eventually became adopted under the Town Council Act of 1988, which remains the second level of administration in Singapore1.
Today, Ang Mo Kio is the third most populated planning area in the North-East region and ranks eighth in terms of population across the entire country. It covers approximately 13.94 square kilometers and is bordered by Yishun to the north, Sengkang to the northeast, Serangoon to the east, Bishan to the south, and the Central Water Catchment to the west. The area boasts amenities such as Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, Nanyang Polytechnic, Mayflower MRT station, ITE College Central, AMK Hub, and the clock tower of Presbyterian High School1.
