Looks like he didn't need a lot of help! Looks like he's teaching himself lines from his keyboard, and once you know what he knows about harmony and notation, you already have a ton of the fundamentals under your belt that you'd have to learn from scratch if you played guitar without already being a keyboard wizard. He's transferring musical knowledge to the fretboard, and clearly doing well!
Jordan is one to have always embraced trying new ways of musical expression. Instruments, gadgets, techniques, different types of synthesis, new gear, effects, all of it.
Also might I add, it's a lot harder to learn a new instrument at that age compared to a child whose body and brain is at the stage where learning new things is the normal thing to do. At Jordan's age, the usual thing is to maintain his skills so that it won't rust, but then he decides to continue and learn a new instrument. That is virtuosity
Awesome!! I was at LTE's Chicago show (the one where Jordan's keyboard broke). When it became clear that he couldn't get his keyboard fixed, to everyone's surprise, he brought out a guitar and played the rest of the show with it! Everyone went nuts! I've never seen so many cameras flash in a room before. It wasn't a Strandberg back then from what I recall but he was amazing even back then. Good on him that he's continuing his journey! Maybe Jordan and his Strandberg will make their way onto a DT or solo record someday!
Guitar and keyboard are like husband and wife, their relationship and transition is smooth. EVERY KEYBOARD PLAYER IS A POTENTIAL GUITARIST AND EVERY GUITARIST IS ALSO A POTENTIAL KEYBOARD PLAYER, IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME.
THIS VIDEO IS JUST ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL.. I REPEATEDLY WATCH THIS VIDEO.. I AM JUST ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY.. UNCLE~MR.JORDAN RUDESS IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE KEYBOARDIST...
@@sillysausage4549 is so simple! he is the fastest, whith fantastic and complicated textures, his musical culture is total...what you need more to consider him the best?
@@sillysausage4549the better question to ask is who is better than Jordan on the keyboard. We’re not talking about classical piano, which Jordan clearly comes from, but the essence of the keyboard which pertains to the rock, electronic, prog metal genre. I’ll wait
I'm not ay all surprised that a virtuoso musician and keyboardist like Jordan can as it were, transpose his incredible playing ability onto the guitar, like he has been playing it for years.
Jordan is like Michael Romeo. He wants to be great at guitar as well as keyboards. Romeo is a guitar master, who can also play keyboards. The two are kinda similar in a way. Jordan wants to do the same thing, which is awesome. I would love to see Jordan and Petrucci do some badass twin-guitar harmony stuff during a DT show! That would take it to the next level.
I was at the Liquid Tension concert @Park West when Jordans keyboard started acting up. When he grabbed Johns guitar and started shredding my mind was completely blown. I had never followed his career as a solo artist just while he was in DT. So I had no clue he could play guitar. That was probably the highlight of that show for me.
I found (for myself at least) that I'm not too old for learning the guitar or anything else. I "think" I am too old. "Practice how you want to feel" was something I came across by accident and Jordan put it into words. Thanks.
Extremely cool! It is inspiring to see a super highly accomplished musician have so much excitement for learning guitar! Proof that music is one of those rare things where your inner “wonder” can exist for a lifetime!
Important to understand is that this guy is one of the most talented musicians in existence. Expect him to outplay you in a matter of months no matter who you are.
Thanks for the amazing insight, Jordan! And I like your explanation of that headspace-when I’m focusing on playing the correct notes, I lose the capacity to feel what’s around me or express emotion in my playing.
Jordan playing guitar is so exciting to watch (for me as a guitarist). Would be epic if Jordan and Petrucci wrote a song with harmonized solos and they play it live! OMG that would be so awesome!!
Once you see the shapes and patterns and you realize they are moveable its a game changer. then you can play in every single key all the way down the fretboard.
Same here. Same description of how I learned what I knew. Tinkering on bandmates gear while a drummer about 27 years. Then stopped for 15 years only playing keyboards a few of those years and then finally picked up my own electric guitar and started teaching myself in 2019. It's been amazing. Not big into the shred stuff but it's cool. I'm more into Gilmour there. Hahahah. But drumming I was huge fan of Mike portnoy.
It's kind of weird. He's already so good but you can also tell that he's kind of just beginning. His technique is incredible but he's lacking the dreaded "feel". No doubt he will be doing triple synchronized string solos with Petrucci and Myung in the near future. Scary indeed.
Well, as a longtime guitarist, I would love to have those hands and fingers! And the access to one of the greatest guitarists on the planet - hey John , how do you do this?
One of the hard things about starting guitar as a first instrument is not realising how much you suck and where you need to improve, a guy with genius level musical ear like him would be able to focus on his mistakes like a laser beam.
What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it gives forth a sound. It’s got wires that vibrate and give music. What can this thing be that I found?
Wow! How long has he been playing? And he's already better than me with my 28 years of playing. The man is seriously talented. Much love and respect Jordan!
I am floored, annoyed, astounded, infuriated, inspired, and gleeful all at once. This dude is goals for sure. Hope I can shred half as hard at 60+ years old.
Dear Jordan, as a proud Strandberg owner and a 30yrs DT fan, your dedication in this new journey is a fantastic inspiration for everyone. Just a humble feedback: I think you can even better capitalize your fluidity if you approach legato as an all hammer on, like the great Allan Holdsworth or Brett Garsed style. Pull offs are cool but an evenly played all-hammer-ons phrasing is rare, identifiable, distinctive and pretty unique mellow sound. My2c! Good luck and keep practicing!
Look, Jordan Ruddess the Julliard graduate is a living room guitarist? I wonder how long it would take for dual guitar songs on the stage. Or more so, a Mike Kenneally/Sean Lane kind of dual wielding piece. Get John to play bass!!
Mike Keneally would have been a greater fit for the *strandberg marketing. But Jordan is a beginner\medium level, so it is about popularity at the end.
Imagine being able to ask John Petrucci for tips on playing guitar, every day!
Yes 100%
Imagine being a guitar player and having Jordan Rudess ask for tips! Of course as long as you know who he is!
Imagine clicking on a TH-cam video and not seeing a stupid comment!
Remember he wakes up as Jordan rudess, everyday.

Man wouldn’t it be amazing for DT to have an album with 2 guitar players?
Djordan Djuntdess.
This man is already shredding at a higher level than many a guitarist! What a mensch.
Well no shit, all he has to do is translate the patterns from a keyboard to a fretboard lmao
He is a monster that’s for sure - just gets to ask Petrucci for tips - insane
Thanks for the love 💙 very honored to be a part of your guitar journey, Jordan!
I bet he is as inspired by what you do as anyone else who got to see/hear that wizardery!

my god ! fantastic man !
I feel you, Jordan. Strandberg is fantastic.

Neato! What a cool series. It's fun watching musicians try to learn a new instrument. The minds is willing, but the flesh is weak! Rock on!
I really respect jordan , one of my favorite keyboardists .
Thanks for the amazing insight, Jordan! And I like your explanation of that headspace-when I’m focusing on playing the correct notes, I lose the capacity to feel what’s around me or express emotion in my playing.
Very inspirational! All the best to Jordan!
this guy will single handed take over DM!
i wouldnt be surprised if DM in 10 years from now is a one man show :D
You really think he only needs 10 years ? 😝
Thank you, now i know dream theater keyboard guy is better that me on guitar.
I am unironically very happy that after 16 years of playing axe I'm about as good as Jordan rudess after a few months 👍🏻
Jordan playing guitar is so exciting to watch (for me as a guitarist). Would be epic if Jordan and Petrucci wrote a song with harmonized solos and they play it live! OMG that would be so awesome!!
your so right strandberg is amazing i will one day own a boden if they ever make them lefty
John: Hey Jordan, wanna play my popular, highly rated and cool looking Majesty guitars?
Jordan: No
Wow! I never knew he recently picked up guitar. He's already great, but he'll definitely go far with it! a true musician and artist!
This is sick! give this man a signature model haha
dude, I agree
IIRC he already has one
He is so humble 😍
Incredible
I hope the next time I see Dream Theater they will include Jordan a little on guitar
Once you see the shapes and patterns and you realize they are moveable its a game changer. then you can play in every single key all the way down the fretboard.

Somehow I have a feeling this guy will become much better in guitar after a few months than me after a 10 years
You are just amazing :)

When to see a guitar solo perform by J.Rudess on stage with DT?!
Some nice playing going on there Mr. Rudess. Cheers!!
What a learner, Jordan is learning at light speed
Jordan/Ola - what model is the trans gray 6? Fusion NX? or Prog NX6 like the twilight purple 7?
Jordan, just keep practising and believing in yourself. Who knows...maybe you'll even play in a band one day!
Totally underrated comment.
Prog 7. Nice. It is fitting that Jordan would pick a Strandberg.
Man Jordan is a Prodigy
Damn… not only is a he an awesome keyboardist but a great guitarist too!!!
Meu sonho é ter uma guitarra dessa ! Surreal !
Obviously, his mastery of the piano has put him years ahead of the normal guy who is just starting to learn how to play the guitar.
One of the hard things about starting guitar as a first instrument is not realising how much you suck and where you need to improve, a guy with genius level musical ear like him would be able to focus on his mistakes like a laser beam.
Being in a band with John Petrucci probably helps too.
I would really like to be listening to your music playing with this guitar your new hobby.
What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it gives forth a sound. It’s got wires that vibrate and give music. What can this thing be that I found?
Will yall drop anniversary guitars this year?
and if so, when?
I need to decide if I wait for them or buy something else.
There's no anniversary models planned for this year.
I'd love to see Jordan spend some quality time with Vai's Hydra guitar.
