Giedrė Kaukaitė sings the romance “Kaby znala ya // Had I known” by Tchaikovsky

The Lithuanian soprano Giedrė Kaukaitė (b. 1943) graduated from the Lithuanian National Conservatoire in 1968 and right away began singing in the Lithuanian National Opera (Halka, Dezdemona, Cio-Cio-san and other roles). In 1978, at the peak of her operatic career, she left the Theatre and devoted herself to the concert and pedagogical activities. Prof. Kaukaitė was a talented educator, for 15 years she headed the Chamber Singing Department in the Conservatoire and some of her students are present in this playlist. She also was and still is an emotional and professional musical journalist. Kaukaitė took part in many prestigious musical festivals: Musik vid Siljan, Prinzregentheater, Saison balte etc. The film based on Poulenc‘s mono-opera “La voix humaine” with Kaukaitė in the title role won the first prize in the international TV film festival (1979). Kaukaitė was awarded the State Arts Prize in 1997. She is well-known as the first, enthustiastic and demanding, performer of many works of the Lithuanian composers (see, for example, www.pakartot.l....
