  • This is Winbeck Wigeon, he's 13 weeks old and he's at the very beginning of his gundog training. For all intents and purposes this is lesson 1, the beginning of everything. I hope you enjoy.

    Hi! Thinking of getting a working cocker spaniel. Would you recommend as a house pet with the correct amount of exercise and mental stimulation?

      @WinbeckGundogsLeeKinsman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      iibelle they are high energy dogs. I wouldn’t recommend any of the cockers that are from working lines to be house pets, though many do have working cockers in the house.

      @@WinbeckGundogsLeeKinsman oh okay. But would you think it woul be possible? Maybe if I did recall training and stuff with the dummies, wouldn't that be very similar to the things you do? What if I added everything you do in training but never actually got to the point where they collect and retrieve real game. Isn't it similar to playing fetch with a toy Duck. Haha. I would get a show cocker spaniel but they are slightly bigger and prone to slight more health problems. I love the look of the working cocker spaniel :) it would either be that or a border collie. Its tough because I seem to love all of the breeds that are from working or herding lines. I also love their compact size and wish to get one. Do you groom yours and if you do, how do you do it?

      iibelle the success you achieve with any dog is determined by an individual’s commitment to maintaining clear expectations and boundaries.
      Yes is the short answer and I would recommend looking to getting support from a professional trainer to help you achieve your goals 👍🏼👍🏼

      @@WinbeckGundogsLeeKinsman thanks bro. I would never own a gun, as I'm not sure how all of that stuff works. Plus I love animals and would never kill a bird like that for fun. And I'm not sure how it works here in England? Once I get a working cocker spaniel I'd put my 100% effort into training the dog, and giving it the correct things to do with all that retrieving stuff with the dummies. Is it necessary to get a professional trainer, if you would never go into gun training? ..; but just the do the majority of it so he's extra good at fetching basically. Anyway, it won't be until atleast 2 years time. And i can't wait.

      iibelle I would definitely recommend a professional trainer. Unfortunately people who don’t hunt naively assume that hunters persuade there dogs to hunt. The truth is they do that anyway and gundog training is the correct way to control a dog that will do that. Many people get gundog breeds that ultimately become problematic because they chase furry animals and birds and they haven’t taken the time to familiarise themselves with the dogs natural instinct.
      Hunting isn’t about not having love for wildlife and the countryside, if anything more love is involved because of the lifetime of devotion and understanding hunting individuals will dedicate to the complete balance. Of course there are those that abuse their right to hunt but there are those in every sphere of life.
      Definitely go to a professional trainer who understands fully the breed you intend to commit to.

    Any advice for a 11 week old working cocker. Apart from the usual mouthing/nipping he has 1-2 periods where he ignores any toy we present to him and literally 'goes for hands/feet/legs'. He's drawn blood twice. If we say 'sit' he stops, only to start again. I don't think it's rage, but any steer on how to handle it would be good. We have started to lift him and pop him into his crate until he's calmed down.

      Terina Masterson the problems you are explaining are really quite complex and it would be difficult, at best, to say how to implement a change towards success. The best thing to do would be to seek one to one support from a professional dog trainer. I would advise sooner rather than later, a puppy that draws blood is quite a serious problem.

      @@WinbeckGundogsLeeKinsman hi, thanks for your advice. I think it was him being completely over tired. He seemd too interested in what was going on to sleep. We have now figured his sleep pattern and its completely changed him. No more aggressive behaviour....

    We get our working cocker in 3 weeks. Can I just check how long you suggest each training session for? Is there a good time to stop? Thanks

    I'm guessing Flash is now around 7months old, judging from the previous comments...
    He reminds me of my bitch at that age, she was and still is a pocket...
    Best advice I had from Will Clulee is no hold back on retrieves until she's 10months old, steady her to sit and stay...
    Good luck..
