The car driving shots, car wash, ad read, all the anamorphic footage.. were all shot on the S9. All the photos are STRAIGHT OUT OF CAMERA as well. The intro was shot on the DJI Pocket 3 tho ;)
Heya! FYI Even though I've been subscribed with the bell on from maybe since you started, I only found this video because PhotoJoseph shared a playlist starting with this video. Which is funny because his videos are usually difficult to find as well.
I saw a comment from you on another channel, did you delete it? It was you justifying the japan trip. Anywho, Gerald Undone did a video about TH-camrs attending the Japan trip and what needs to change. Will you watch that video on give your thoughts on that video in his video comment section? I'm sure you'll have an interesting perspective since you seemed passionate in your comment
@@LetsBHonest I haven't watched it, but they were talking about it on livestream yesterday. I think that UNLESS SONY CHANGES practices these smorgasbord events are competitive necessities. I think that the whole corporate totalitarian system is problematic, but it is fishy that the moment that Lumix starts making moves, and improving their marketing and distribution tactics suddenly the rules have to change to favour Sony again.
A 10 min record limit is crazy
Yeah hopefully they change it and jsut let it overheat. I think consumers ruined it for themselves tho. Cause instead of us accepting the fact that smaller cheaper cameras are going to overheat.. we complain and scream about.. which then leads to companies doing things like record limits.
I literally said..."hmm i might cop this for when im not tryna lug around my Lumix S5II"...seen this comment..."nevermind" LMAO!
It seems like it’s for people that make 60 second videos though.
@@spiritunboundwe filmed a micro documentary with it.. stay tuned.
I think recording limits are an issue for people who film mostly interviews. As a narrative filmmaker, I don't find the recording limits to be an issue since I don't film 15 minute long clips.
locals politely putting up with you guys filming loudly on the train.
Plot twist, it's called audio processing baby girl. We were talking to ourselves. Bye bish.
@@cammackey 😂 Ok YT bro. true colours coming out now.
@@jaswingrove ❤️☺️
I was nervous lol
@@rapbisnar I’m sassy lol
Awesome video! The fact that the S9 can still do anamorphic desqueeze, anamorphic stabilization and shoot in 6K 3:2 open gate is crazy!
Love that you just whipped out the most aesthetic camera collection casually between the Zf, X100vi and this
😂😂😂😂
It's amazing how much better a camera review is when the reviewer knows how to shoot and use LUTs. Some big-name reviewers make this camera look like doodoo w/their dookie footage and photos they shot. Your video really showcases the full capabilities of the S9 through your footage and photos. I'm kind of tired of chasing new overspecked cameras. I want to start having fun creating and from the looks of this video that's exactly how I felt watching this. Great storytelling as well!
There's a lot of talk about what the camera is missing, but loving the colour and character that can be achieved for both still and motion.
You’re crushing the TH-cam game man. Seriously so happy to see your growth and it’s for a reason… you’re a badass. Much love ❤
Thank you bruv. You still in Redlands?
@@cammackey I bought a home in Calimesa!
Love the jumping around style of this yet keeping the whole thing fluid Cam.
ADHD combined with no game plan lol. That constant stress to our brain, making us overshoot.
@@cammackey those are the ones that always come out the best
No viewfinder, hot shoe or mechanical shutter make it a no go for me.... but... looks great and glad to see Lumix continuing to develop their product line.
This channel’s gotten so good, feels like you guys came out of nowhere, fantastic stuff, here for the ride.
Just like Frankenstein it’s not perfect - I’m stealing that 😂😂
I can't believe that the S5II didn't get this kind of hype. It does the exact same things as this camera yet it has an evf and mechanical shutter without a record limit.
The S5II doesn’t excite me this way. I have been using it a lot lately, it’s pretty suck honestly. But it doesn’t motivate me to get out and shoot photography like the S9 body style does and now quick and easy lust support
Does S5II has luts as well?
@@dasIDS yes it has the ability to add them to the camera as profiles.
The S9 is a jack of all trades and master of none... I'm had high hopes now dashed, I'll wait for version 2.0 (BTW, the A7Cii can shoot X-PAN aspect)
Yeah man. I’m sure the S9 will be REALLY cool to some people, but the A7C II (which I have and LOVE) is sooo much more versatile and an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a current hybrid camera. I was excited about the S9, but as I watched the first review, my excitement got stifled minute by minute. And like I said, some will love it and that’s great. I just hope it pushes Sony to make firmware updates that let you use LUTs for stills (which IMO should have been a feature on all LUT-capable cameras in the first place). If the S9 can achieve that, I’m happy =)
If I could redo my life, I’d try to figure out how to be as cool as Cam. Great hanging in Osaka my brother. That was a blast, killer video here, and can’t wait to see the mini doc!
Next time I’ll try to keep up 😂
Cam in Japan is a new vibe. No EVF is a weird choice. But I guess it makes it smaller
Bro. I’m 100% going back before end of year. Let’s go bro.
honestly if the s5ii and s5iix weren't so inexpensive on the used market, it'd consider this. The LUT thing is really convincing, but the no flash is killing it for me
7:00 how to spot tourist in tokyo... tourist talks inside the mrt :)
We only talked where others were talking. We ain’t dense.
Looks cool, but really, it just makes me want to pick up an s5IIx
You definitely pissed off some Japanese on that train haha
The audio is processed. We were that loud. We’re not rude.
@@cammackey ya just too a second to scroll I figured. I was like cam being rude no way! Loved your points in the camera and you didn’t just talk about the good things on it. Can wait to get invites to things like this! Keep it up Cam! Loving what you’re doing.
Man, I wish I’d have known about and subscribed to you a lot longer ago! Hilarious that the S9 controversy and tweets/threads around it brought you on my radar.
This film is awesome! (I started saying video, but dude this is better than that. This’s a Casey Neistat level film. 👍🏻)
You opened this with the absolutely right amount of negativity. Highlighting every single reason I’m disappointed with the S9. Then turned it around and brought up how the camera elicits feelings of creativity and fun. The App focus and development hopefully will trigger better efforts by the other manufacturers with their apps. Open gate is what I want to see other manufacturers start to incorporate.
Great stuff, definitely subscribed, sharing this too!
Cam, great overview of this camera! It has some limitations for sure, but I don't think it takes a long term/6 month review to decide if this camera is right for you or not (like some may think). I think you highlighted the main points in a short time very well. Consumers need to do their due diligence, too, when deciding on a purchase (like if they really need a mechanical shutter or if they really need to use flash for travel snap shots). To me, this is all the travel camera or short form content camera most could need, in a semi-stylish and compact package. I've been testing my S5IIx with electronic shutter. I don't shoot much action or motion so it doesn't matter as much as I worried about it. If it does matter to one's work, certainly look elsewhere. I like the S9 even as a main camera for short form content or mainly natural light photos, as long as you understand its limitations. I don't create content anymore, and would NOT choose this first as a main/TH-cam-Long Form Content camera, but there are work arounds if it was your main camera. Your work reminds me of the golf equipment world where they say a great golfer can play any set of clubs, even bathroom plungers, and still shoot a great score. I feel you (Cam) could take the Lumix S9 and still create some epic work if it was all you had. In summary, for those looking for just one camera...short form content = GO. Long form content and flash needed, EVF needed for crap eyes for manual focus lenses = no go for the S9. I trust focus peaking enuf, tho. If you only use auto focus lenses, you're good. I pre-ordered it as it is not going to be my main camera. I will likely return it before the 30 day window at the major retailer I ordered from and pick it grey market or from an eBay retailer, as I honestly don't value it as much as the retail price, unfortunately.
Agreed. Something I love about tiny cameras like this is how dumb they are. They’re not overly complicated. They keep it simple. Sometimes I just wanna capture it. Sometimes I just wanna say something. I don’t want to have to build a giant camera out, I just want to say what I need to say. It’s the same reason I was about to buy the A7CII. But now we get open gate ff and “film simulations”.
This is a beautiful camera.
I bet everyone was pointing at you saying “Look its Cam Mackey!! I know him from TH-cam” 😂
Def not 😂 I got Johnny Depp a handful of times tho lol
Looks like a legit cinematographer dad cam 😅 no flash, no audiojack, no evf are a huge let down, but again for the price..... Geeking luts is always fun. Could be good also for a scouting locations (or to tell my wife that's also a professional tool, not a toy for myself)
While bummed about the same issues (no EVF, hot shoe and mech. shutter) I still really want to make this work. So I am thinking Sigmas i-series small primes, hopefully samyang will soon come out with their L-mount versions of their tiny F2.8 primes. What I love is the LUT implementation , the app and YES the XPAN aspect ratio!
Great video Cam! Both an insightful and beautiful looking video to watch
Im probably the only one that doesn't care about the time record limit because I have 4 other cameras with no time limit. My biggest gripe would probably be the no evf and the mechanical shutter. After watching all the review videos I think I would still prefer this camera over my X100VI. X100VI was a let down for me tbh
Yeah Fuji kinda missed the mark on the upgrade. I still love the X100 series tho
You by far have the best reviews, hands-down. With that being said, we are witnessing some extremely sad times from the camera industry. Camera companies are now shelling out cheap shit that does not retain value or quality we have been used too all of these years. Camera companies have now adopted the phone model where they come out with something new every year and they try to convince everyone that they need to buy it
Well I think there’s only one company who’s releasing constant updates every year, and they also tend to have some of the most advance cameras which are great for working pros. But also, not everything is for us. Some cameras are for the budget friendly. Other cameras are for the more expensive working pros. I’m sure by the end of the year you’re gonna wish certain new cameras were cheaper ;)
Uv got s5iix, that specs is a leap ahead against the competitors for the same price. And again and again. Doesn't overheat.
I disagree. The s5iix is amazing. But there are a number of cameras far more advanced than it and even Lumix says it. BUT they’re also more expensive than the S5IIX.. they’re all jsut tools and all serve different purposes. Lumix knows their place in the market and know what to do.
My realistic dream camera is a sony a7c ii with real time luts in stills mode and no EVF as a sacrifice for dual card slots and full size HDMI at a push. The no EVF in this camera would make sense if it was a compromise for something else like dual card slots or to reduce overheating somehow so not sure why there isn't one (obviously there's a reason I just don't know it) but to not include a mechanical shutter or hotshoe on top of that in a rangefinder style camera is SO confusing to me, especially since they released an f8 manual focus lens to be coupled with it like oh cool it's bright enough to confidently take out my manual lens that can't go below f8 but too bright to comfortably use focus peaking with no viewfinder and it's not video focused as there's so many recording time limits so I really don't know who this camera is for honestly. I think this is the consequence of most consumer camera's being hybrid camera's. Give us stylized camera's like this that are heavily stills focused with some very handy video features like the x100vi and video focused camera's like the fx3/30 or just a modular box because I'm sick of mirrorless video focused camera's being DSLR shaped with that ugly ass viewfinder bump coming out the top that I'll literally never use. I think I'm so salty because I can't afford an xpan that'll probably break and cost more than the camera to be repaired and don't like using camera's that look like boring tools and my a7c ii can't do luts in stills so this would've been the closest to perfect camera for me if it just had a mechanical shutter and a hotshoe lmao come on Panasonic let a man eat !!!
Dude, I feel you so much, I got a good laugh out of your rant while agreeing to EVERYTHING (except DON’T YOU DARE TOUCH THAT EVF ON MY A7C II!!!). I hope Sony finally come to their senses and add LUT support for stills via firmware update. They’re missing out big time and it blows my mind that they don’t just do it. For a lot of people, wouldn’t that be the final nail in the coffin when deciding between the A7C II and a Fujifilm camera?
thank you for being critical. Not just hype for all the strengths - fair feedback.
It looks like a great $900 camera.
When comparing it to its competition.. like the Sony A7CII.. similar build quality, missing viewfinder, current record limits, no headphone port.. but also the A7CII is $700 more….
If we compare it to the Fujifilm xe4.. both have no viewfinder, ones FF AND has open gate…. I could go on but the S9 is far better to out it short. That camera launch at $850….
I think the issue is.. people are comparing the price to the s5ii which is severely UNDER PRICED.
More like a 600 dollar camera. 20 minute record limit at 1080p is UNACCEPTABLE. No one should be making excuses for this horseshit.
See the first 2:30 mins of your video was so much more honest and you told the truth and got those things out of the way. This is the balance that others seem to not want to give or admit needs to be there...
I bought your Roadrunner luts, they are incredible!
Appreciate all the creative energy that went into making this review unique and interesting.
It's Frankenstein's Monster - Frankenstein was the scientist!
Is the S5IIx that much more inconvenient? I'd rather have that or the ZV-E1 tbh.
Great video Cam! Regarding the lack of EVF, don’t be surprised if someone releases a cold-shoe-mounted, self-powered EVF that connects to the HDMI port. BAM, problem solved!
That would be so sick yaha
Honestly, what I liked best was the sponsored segment. I could only wish that more ad reads also taught me something interesting.
Also, the only good thing to come out of Gerald's whiny tirade is that I've been exposed to a lot of channels that I had no idea existed, like yours. Great work!
Damn I really appreciate that man. It’s been a hell of a week so messages like this really helps our mental healthy. I got thick skin but a lot of the other guys got it even worse sadly.
Authentic style as always🔥
So was the camera they gave you guys *prototypes?* 📷
I am mainly a filmmaker. And for the price, I think the S9 is a pretty good choice.
just started mounting vintage lenses on my S5ii. that alone would make me pick this up over a x100vi
Did you just say XPan mode?! Wow, that's something I've been hoping for in many a camera release. So good to see so many beautiful images from one of my favourite cities too 🇯🇵, thanks Cam.
Love it. Trying to decide between this and pocket 3 for travel cam and EDC to keep in fanny pack
I would choose the ZF or A7Cii or ZV-E1 any day over the S9.
All great cameras! If you tried all of those cameras you would realize they’re all vastly different tools that are great for certain tasks and shit for other tasks haha. I love all the options we get these days
@@cammackey yeah we are living such a great time. Keep up the good work. Love the videos

I loved loved this review! I'm still not understanding all the hate and the people crying over a camera release but OH WELL it's just the internet. I'll definitely pick this one up as a C-Cam and/or travel cam. Keep up the amazing work, love your content whether it is Lumix, Fujifilm, Sony, Canon, Nikon, or whatever, just keep making amazing pictures 👌
Dammit, I was JUST in Osaka.. Would have been very cool to bump into you! Keep up the great work, Cam!
Great seeing you with other creators & having fun ☺️ The luts & photos looked fantastic too! Love & Best Wishes from London 👍
Kinda reminds me of the Panasonic gf1. My first mirrorless camera. I loved that thing! Had no evf etc.. but it was just cool. Liked it way better than the canon dslr I had. Maybe that’s what Panasonic were going for here. At first I looked at the s9 and thought Panasonic had gone mad. But the more I look at it, from a hybrid, discrete, make a mini film in an unobtrusive way point of view, what’s going to be better?
Interesting…
As usual great photography!!!! It makes reviews worth to watch!!! Cheers!!
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
tricky little edit! loved it. and appreciate the "practicality driven" perspective. limitations sometimes blur the underlying opportunities. thank you for pointing them strengths out. no perfect camera, but obviously capable in experienced hands and an open mind!
Would totally rock a blue one it it had a EVF 😤😫😫
Sick vid Cam, you really extracted some premium quality out of this camera, have me debating switching to full frame over MFT for compact hybrid creation 🙌🏽
Since the realtime lut function came out in the s5 bodies I've been wanting that feature in a smaller body, to use as a proxy film camera. Load up some since luts, and just shoot in jpeg.
I wonder if Panasonic will eventually put this into a very small micro 4/3 body.
I’m expecting a gx9ii with this same body later thisvyear
Great shots, Crisp edit ... I think the test will be if you are using it in a month ?
Haha depends what comes out next! If this camera didn’t have open gate and LUT support I wouldn’t be rocking it. I don’t see those options coming in the next wave of c cameras sadly. Hopefully I’m wrong
The sample images and video clips look nuts! 😮😮
I’m happy with my X100VI so far… I need to use the video features more.
I just really struggle without a viewfinder living in Perth. Having said that I loved the results you got with it so...
Seeing you can get an XT5 for the money. Whats the point?
Open gate full frame recording… better dynamic range.. better low light.. custom lut support.. uhhhh lots of points.
Strange combination of hits and misses… is it designed primarily for filming or for shooting stills? Are the compromises based on price point or on size/weight goals? Regardless - your review is pure gold. Can’t wait for the next one in the series 👏🏻
Dude exactly. It answers everything but leaves you with even more questions 😂

I’m not the intended audience for this camera (will stick to the slower process of shooting my Zf), but appreciated your review. Great job dude.
Yeah I still love my ZF as well!
Use the Zoom M3 mic and an LED light, maybe a Rotolight ! Better sound head phone jack, see the light use Lut ! Winner !
I'm very into this, although the non-mech shutter and no flash really keeps it in its own corner far from Fuji. The Sigma fp is a lot more durable, but lacks the IBIS and proper AF, though it's also amazing, and I would have gotten one if it had come out later (i.e. it was too limiting for the first in the system). All the L-mount Panasonics have that XPan aspect, and Sigma has both 1:3 and an A1 ratio for printing posters or A3 paper.
I really hope that Sigma releases some leaf-shutter lenses for these electronic shutter cameras, but I think it's unlikely. I am hopeful that we'll see some affordable, very light lenses from Lumix, now, though.
I'm especially keen to see more of how you fit this into your workflow because fashion is so flash+mech oriented traditionally, yet in the shortclip era, there really is a place for this as a complement to X100/GR etc.
Agreed with everything you said! For me, this isn’t a pro camera. Feels less like work and more like fun. Same reason as Fuji, except full frame and custom color profile options!
Really enjoyed this! That trip looked so dope.
This is awsome! love your video! it brings excitement to this new Panasonic S9. The photos you showed on the S9 are the closest I have seen to any film sim. I stoped useing film recipes on fuji because I found them gimmicky and just shot raw to edit in post. This Panasonic S9 is a game changer with the LUTS and how customizable they are not to mention making LUTS on a phone app. As far as, no evf I am cool with that because I hardly ever use an evf and mostly shoot from the hip and use the back screen 99.9% of the time. I can't wait to pick myself up the new Panny S9! Great Video Cam!
Dude same with the Fuji sims. I think they look great, but I rarely actually use them for editing. Which leads me to say, I still feel the need to edit my Fuji files. With this new LUT support.. that all goes out the window.
The S9 is only a dealbreaker because this Camera was Never for some people in the first place.
People have to be honest and say oh well not for me. But no, they want their complaints to be heard no matter how unnecessary it is.
AGREED. I just think a lot of tech people are bored and are forgetting there’s artist who use these tools. And there’s a different tool for every different artist.
Honnest review! thank you!
Would be great if Leica could put the guts of the S9 into the Leica CL while retaining the EVF - love small cameras but also love an EVF! Anyway, super excited to try the new compact L-Mount lenses and using the new App to easily create some LUTs to load into Luminar Neo.

Do you have a link to that camera strap that you're using
Yooooooo where can we get one of those hats!?
Coming soon!
No mechanical shutter? Isn’t rolling shutter an issue? A cold show- so no flash at all? How can this be proclaimed as a great camera for street photographers seriously? This camera is objectively worse than it’s competitors aside from it being full frame… but if you care about full frame, why shoot with this form factor? You’re not going to be needing bokeh for street. If you really do, get an Xpro and adapt a fast lens. Super strange!
I suggest you try it first. It really comes down to the LUT feature. The camera works jsut fine, minus the bells and whistles that I agree should have been on the camera. But the LUT feature will steal your creativity haha. And open gate if you do video
@@cammackeyeh, I rather just edit and keep what I would argue are more than “bells and whistles”, especially for street. The LUT stuff is cool and innovative, but it’s a massive tradeoff.
To each their own of course but I don’t see how an electronic shutter could even be used for most street!

Dope camera!
I’m surprised you didn’t touch on the kitlens. A manual focus only, fixed f/8 lens is the most ridiculously stupid kitlens I’ve ever heard of. Yes it’s small, but it totally contradicts the idea of simplicity/ease of use, and by itself completely negates the full frame sensor. Plus IMO it makes the camera look like one of those $100 "4K video cameras" from Amazon.
It sounds like it’s not for you. But the funny thing is, we all said the same thing when we first saw it 😂😂😂 like literally everyone’s hate on the S9 and this camera… we all had similar thoughts. But then we started using it and were like ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh this shits fun. I think that’s the big disconnect right now. We’re so use to camera releases being the latest and greatest tech.. so when something fun comes out it like malfunctions gear heads brains haha. Which is all of us, in some form or factor. But yeah, the lens is freaking fun. It’s shit, but FUN.
