From an account of 1976 Knebworth Festival:
"Then Lynyrd Skynyrd hit the stage in mid afternoon and the whole place just lit up. They played that incredible, now legendary set. Great, good times boogie rock 'n' roll with lashings of rich guitar playing.
Lanky Alan Collins was a very striking figure, dressed all in red like the stage, he became the focal point visually.
Huge flares, impossibly long hair and a jutting Gibson Firebird. "Freebird" was the greatest moment of the whole festival and perhaps the greatest of any live performance I have ever seen, for the generosity of the musicians and the sheer joy of the crowd."

You are absolutely right and I'm a fanatic when it comes to guitarist and especially Lynyrd Skynyrd . Allen Collins is in my top 3 guitarist World Wide and I'm yet to ever hear anyone nail his sound and style right down to a bullseye . He's one of the most dynamic guitarist that's ever lived and I'll tell you what.. Stevie Gaines was Badd as Hell . He never did get to really showcase his talent and I would put him up against any of the guitarist of this day and age . I'm talking about his style that he brought to Lynyrd Skynyrd . You can tell that Strat when it comes in there and I believe I could tell it anywhere I heard it . I'm simply stating that Lynyrd Skynyrd had more talent than any band I've ever seen or heard . I saw Skynrd in 96 at River Bend Cincinnati and One of the Guitar Army's best was jamming with em then . None other than the one and only Huey Thomason ! My my my them boys brought some shit to The River Bend Community that night . And I was in a position to where I couldn't even drink a beer . Probably worked out for my best because I would have still been passed out on the river bank 😂 Damn they rocked the Hell out of that place . And I'm so glad I got to go because I got to see Leon Wilkison and Billy Powell ! The truth about all of it is it was really a very very emotional time for me because that was my dream to get to see the Legends and I cut my teeth listening to there music . It brought back a lot of memories from when I was very young and my brothers that introduced me to Skynyrd Nation is passed and I was just overwhelmed . The second time I saw them was in 2012 at the Eastern Kentucky Expo center in Pikeville KY and it was just a few days after my nephew that I raised had committed suicide and Tuesdays gone was one of his favorite songs . And when they played that song that night I have never felt such a humbling feeling with a song like that . And they did it flawlessly ! Needless to say I just stood and cried through the whole song and actually after the song because it really hit home . I've got a little saying about songs and a real song isn't wrote.... it's lived and is a reflection on so many peoples lives . And just about every song that Skynyrd does is exactly that. They never ever encouraged any kind of drug use or alcohol and we all know that they loved to drink especially but for instance.... needle and the spoon.... don't mess with the needle and the spoon and take a trip to the moon .... it'll take you away . Mr Saturday night special it's got a barrel and it's blue and cold.... ain't good for nothing but put a man 6ft in a whole . My all time favorite Band ever !

One memory that stands out to me about Allen was his foot stomp! He was always in rhythm with the beat and tore it up on the guitar! The trio of guitarists made for the greatest three to ever play together! Three legends on one stage with three guitars! All I can say is WOW! The good ole days are gone, good thing we have TH-cam to help with the memories! Fly on Freebird, FLY ON!

Allen Collins was one of the greatest guitarists,,, but it seems he was in the shadows. He never got the credit he deserved as a guitarist and a song writer.
I was happy to see "Free bird" selected as the number 3 best solo of all time in Guitar World. Long Live Allen Collins!

I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd at least six times live. The first time was Sept. 15, 1973.in the Charlotte Collsium, It was my 16 birthday what a hell of a present. I will never forget Allen Collins jumping about four feet off the ground playing that Firebird on Feebird. I have never seen anything like it since. There will never be anyone who will match that. He was kicking ass and taking names. RIP Brother, MCR

Jim Roberts what a dumb thing to say. Who comes to a tribute video to try trash the artist, do you have nothing better to do with your time? Allen Collins was exceptionally talented and his career and life was tragically ended way too soon. Why even compare musicians anyways? Musics highest quality comes from cooperating with other musicians

Allen Collins was a damn good guitarist and song writer. Because of Allen we have tunes forever to cherish such as Tuesdays Gone, Needle and the Spoon, That Smell, The Ballad of Curtis Lowe, Gimme Three Steps and of course the classic that still endures just as strong today as it did when it was released: Free Bird. Allens epic jaw dropping aggressive guitar solo and Ronnie Van Zants unforgetable heartfelt delivered vocals is what made Free Bird the legend it`s become. Keep soaring Allen.

Man, what a fitting tribute, kudos to you my friend. Allen was truly gifted. It's a cryin' shame how the last years of his life spiraled down after he lost his wife. That really took the wind out of his sails.
But to me, it's even sadder how he kinda gets overlooked a lot of times when people talk about guitar greats. I proudly own and play an old Gibson Firebird, all because of him.

I really like and respect videos like this. I for one will never forget Allan Collins and his talent on the ole' six string. I met him, Gary Rossington, Steve Gains, and Ronnie Van Zant back stage at the Oakland Coliseum concert in California July 7, 1977. They were all full of excitement and life. They performed the absolute best concert I had ever seen that day. I still get bummed a bit when I think exactaly 109 days later they were in that tragic horrible crash. All original members are gone now and I hope they have Heaven rockin' for when the rest of us get there. God bless them all!!!

From a 3 minute walk to where you grew up in Cedar Hills and a 5 minute drive to where you rest. All my life I never knew that there was such greatness hailing from this place. Wish I could have met him but he was already paralyzed by the time I was 14 and gone a little while after.
Makes these streets seem a little more hopeful, knowing that through hard work and a ton of God given talent a westside fellow as myself can be a legend.
Not that I want to be, I like basking in the light of knowing he did it.

Always thought you simply cannot replace Allen! Aside from Free bird he did so many great parts on their original albums! His rhythm is so indispensable as so on the money! Then on top of that he’s like the nicest guy and a family man till tragedy struck and kept striking him! I know pain as anyone else! I’ve walked into a room my mother had just died in! But to loose both a wife who was with child that’s so heartbreaking! I miss Allen as all of lynyrd skynyrd’s band mates are the greatest American rock band to me! But Allen was simply the heart of Skynyrd in my opinion! RIP Allen your sorely missed and still loved!

Me too! When I look at him playing in the happy years, it's so sad to think of the tragic fate he suffered.
Great that you like the song, thanks! :)

Because his story is probably the single most tragic in rock history. Loss after loss, tragedy after tragedy. Terribly tragic life for a good guy and great guitarist.

To Me , he was like Duane Allman. Gregg Allman once said of his Brother , the music came in his head and out his hands. I think the same can be said about Allen Collins. R.I.P. Allen Collins.

beautiful and from the heart man. Thanks for sharing. I loved Allen's spirit and his playing. It was truly a sad day when that plane crash took some good people. I looked forward back then to seeing Gary and Allen keeping things together with the Rossington Collins band. I was so saddened to see Allen go through even more tragedies, and then his death. Thanks for writing this song, and sharing it with us. There will never be another Allen Collins.
