    Great video explanation Mike! You're one of my favourite goto youtube site for detailed explanation (and insight) of plugins and techniques.
    I've been playing with NLS lately and ran a drum loop (kick, snare, hihat, splash) through NLS with the drive on full, then switched between each of the 32 channel emulations of each console with an analyser. Wow! Each channel is so very different from the next!
    The difference between Mike 1 and Mike 2, for example, is stark. Far more bottom end on Mike 2, as just one example. So, my advice to anyone watching this is that it's well worth going through each channel and making notes about the EQ & saturation differences of each channel (rather than just each console) so that you can assign the right instruments through the most appropriate channels in order to really get the most out of these consoles.

    Just discovered your channel today and have been watching your videos, this being the most enlightening for me, only because I wan't sure how to use the NLS to best effect. Apart from your explanations being well articulated and detailed - they're inspiring too... I can't wait to get experimenting now. Thank you again, Mike.

    I put it last in chain as well but ""Not working as hard" option sounds appealing.
    I often imagine all the pro mixers using true/pro studio gear never had to work as hard as us mixing in the box. Many classic but mediocre mixes out there sounded great overall just because thw console/gear they were run through.

    I guess putting it in the first slot would go well with the “less is more” concept. ;) if the NLS gives you confidence to leave it as it is, I think there’s no shame in that.

    Mike, thank you for all you do! Quick question: would I put this on my Aux tracks as well (for example, where all my drum tracks are routed) also would I put it on my "Sends" tracks where the reverb is and all the effects tracks?

  • @YoMyNamesJakeG
    @YoMyNamesJakeG 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Mike. Great video. Question though. Do you use the bus version on things like a kick bus if you have a kick in and out channel being sent to a single bus? So like, would it make sense to send the kick in and kick out to VCA 1 on the NLS and call it “Drums.” Then on the kick bus, have an NLS bus instance also sent to VCA 1. Then also, have the kick bus and all other drums sent to a drum group bus, also with the NLS bus sent to VCA1? So the individual channel, the instrument groups and entire drum kit all sent to the same VCA channel?

    • @mixingwithmike
      @mixingwithmike  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jake, I use this plugin quite a lot and have found that I only use the NLS Buss on the Main stems or Mix Buss. I occasionally use it on an individual sound like a bass, but find that overusing the plugin starts to yield negative results. Too much of a good thing I guess...

    Wondering if I should put this on each individual track, or if I should apply the "track" plug in to the busses (guitar bus, lead bus, drum bus,...) and assign each bus to a separate group, then put the "bus" on the master bus, so Summing each bus together. Or if I REALLY should put it on each individual track and assign them to groups that way. Because for some reason, I feel like putting it on each individual track is either redundant or maybe side steps using the busses in the DAW, which usually contain some important processing. Still kind of confused on that aspect. Kinda feels like putting them on each track within the normal busses defeats the purpose of using those busses, since you're creating busses with the plug in. Or how about putting it on each guitar track, then putting the bus plug in on your normal guitar bus? But then that wouldn't send it properly to the master bus. For some reason it seems to me like the best way may be to put it on individual tracks in "stacks" or to put it on the buss/summing stack to kid of 'create" stereo channels. Putting a channel on each bus then running it through the bus plug on the master would be VERY similar to using a real summing mixer with 6-12 channels. I'm just not sure if I should do it THAT way like a real summer, or put it on each individual track to create a virtual counsole. Interesting.

    I'm a little bit confused on how the VCA channel groups is supposed to interact (or is it replace) you normal bus routing in your daw. I'm automatically assigning my drums to an Aux channel to I can use Cytomic The Glue as a bus compressor... so I'm not gonna abandon my normal routing and only sum things in NLS

  • @petersimms8290
    @petersimms8290 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video. I am struggling with NLS right now as i have placed NLS on each drum channel & then a Buss version on an auxiliary channel so its a Drum sub mix channel. However you can't add effects to this sub group. How do you get around this?

  • @Booliens
    @Booliens 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I had this for a while and stopped using it because I could not figure out if I was using the daw bussing and routing correctly with it, could you please explain in greater detail for a mix with busses? eg, bass, MIDs, drums, fx. I actually think this was one of the worst purchases I ever made but I'm willing to give it another shot.

    • @mixingwithmike
      @mixingwithmike  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Booliens Hi Booliens,
      Are you talking about the VCA groups that are built into the plugin? If so, there is actually no audio that feeds through them The idea is that you can set up 8 individual "groups" that allow you to change the settings for all plugins that are assigned to them. I explain this in detail starting around 9 mins in. I LOVE this plugin and use it on almost every mix. I think it is definitely worth another look.
      Cheers!
      Mike

    • @Booliens
      @Booliens 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Michael White so are you saying that the buss component could be put on an empty channel and just used to control individual instances of channels?

    • @mixingwithmike
      @mixingwithmike  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, not exactly. The VCA Group settings are identical on every instance of NLS whether it is the Channel or the Buss version. When you assign a group of NLS plugins to your Drum tracks, for example, and assign each instance to VCA 1, you then have the ability to adjust the Console Type, overall Level, Drive, Noise, or Mic setting to all the intances assigned to VCA 1 at the same time without having to copy paste your settings one by one. The VCA Groups do not stream audio, they only control the instances assigned to them. The NLS Buss works exactly the same way except iy is an emulation of the Mix Buss electronics, not the channel electronics. Do not confuse the term 'Buss' with and audio bus within the DAW.
      Hope this makes sense...

    • @Booliens
      @Booliens 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Michael White that makes a bit more sense now thanks! I'll have to give it another try!

  • @MichaelKmita
    @MichaelKmita 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Was looking for the answer and your nice video made it clear that the plugin actually DOES NOT MAKE ANY SUMMING, only emulating channel and buss strips. Even if the results are fascinating, the name is a misnomer. And, as I observe, many users have problems understanding how to use it, because of the name. I also was not sure how to make routing. But this is as simple as putting as many instances as you want to as many channels as you want, no matter if it's Channel for a channel or Buss for a buss or Channel for a buss or vice versa, in any combination. And one instance has nothing to do with the others. It's just changing sound in the place you place it, in the way you want it, plus convenient grouping and remote control functions.

  • @Gnotestudios

    But does it sound like the original gear?

    • @mixingwithmike
      @mixingwithmike  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a hard question to answer, because it is an emulation of all the "in between" stuff. The general 'feel' of it seems right to me. That's the best I can say.

    • @briancase6180
      @briancase6180 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way I think of it, which might not be completely correct: the vca groups allow you to control all channel plugins on that group from the buss plugin. They also all get an additional bit of saturation by being summed to that channel, but the main idea is that you now have a group fader and drive knob. Personally, I don't need/use this, but perhaps I'm still a relatively naive user...

      @@alfieholloway I think, like all things audio and music production, "if it sounds good, it is good." Thus, for me, I get what I want just from the channel plugin: it gives a variety of colors and sounds pretty sweet on most material. I like that I can drive it past where I want; this gives me confidence that I'm not limited by its capability. I will probably continue to play with the buss, but I'm happy with my purchase even if I never use the buss plugin. :)
