In my homebrew I've been running the underdark as a hollow earth environment with the deep caves being the transition zone. The hollow earth is in constant dim light given off by the floating, magical core of the planet. Aberrations rule the core and the underdark races are either trying to contain them or escape them, raiding the surface. Edit: the point of this ramble is to appease the elder algorithm and share to inspire others.
Is it weird that I think a Neotholid could still cause ceramorphis and turn a host into a sort of Illathid, but it would need to find a large enough host, like a Kraken....
that concept is great an I'll use it. In my mind, Aboleth would be very interested to learn more abouth anything Illithid and due to their size and HP could take over a Neotholid or four :) I'll have some Aboleth use an / some enslaved Neotholid to make psionic horrific amalgamations of statblocks and designs my players can annihilate when they're higher levels. They just want to go to some Dwarfs for their crafting and rune-enchantment expertise but the Dwarfs dug too deep, into the underdark. Yep that sounds like a lot of fun for them. Stinky, slimey and mucous dripping psionic aquatic / amphibic tendril horrors, maybe destroy an Aboleth groupe (do Aboleth live in swarms, schools or families?) and as a reward they get super fun magic items, dwarf friends and a level up.
Same. I have different lore for them in each of my homebrew worlds, from being cousins of Black Dragons, a unique pairing of a blue and red dragon, and lastly among the forgotten children of Tiamat along with Yellow Dragons
I think wizards should come out with a monster book called forgotten monsters of the past and just bring back all the older additions best monsters to 5e 🤷♂️ or a Volos part 2
For me when discussing things as 'more lethal/dangerous/best' in 5e, talking statblocks is necessary, but when only discussing cooler, or favourite, or something, just naming them and saying tidbits of lore is also great
Great stuff! I think deep dragons for sure need to be officially added into 5e! I like both long or short format and which I prefer is entirely based on my mood that day and what is going on when I'm watching. Long format is better when I'm watching while doing chores such as dishes and cleaning while I prefer short format when I'm doing certain other things like art while watching/listening. Very short is if I'm cycling through or preparing a list to watch. I prefer at least 5 min so I'm not stopping a lot to switch videos, etc. VERY short content is often best if its a comedy sketch and VERY funny to be worth the hassle of having to select another video 'too soon' again. You can't make a single video to please everyone even the same subscriber has moods and things that vary day to day.
I'd love to see the Kuatoa Leviathan in 5e. Could be a fantastic boss monster. I'd love to see maybe a CR5 behemoth with a bit of clerical spellcasting that can go full stealth underwater. Something that can challenge everybody in the party with brawn, magic, and stealth while still being a good first big boss
I didn't like the whole using monsters from 3.5 as I am a newbie playing in 5e. Meaning that I only really got half of the info for potentional encounters. Maby if you grab monsters from older editions you can give us your thoughts or show a Word document about how to balance the stats and abilities between editions? Doubt anyone else except a noob like me has these problems, but felt like I had to say it anyways.
I always pronounced it like neo-thelid, but now that I think about it...not really sure if essentially new thelid is the intent and they way you pronounce it is cool.
He states quite clearly that the books for 3.x were better. And they were. Lore, ecology, in depth information about creatures, not just a picture and stat block.

Ok cool top ten idea well actually it’s a twofertop ten monsters updates in 5e and then the reverse 3.5 monsters that are better then the 5e version
I always get the general feel from these videos that he just says "3rd edition was better".
I mean if it was wouldn't I be playing that instead of 5e? Each time I revisit 3e or 3.5e for a video it just highlights areas where 5e is lacking
