I’d be down to maybe 3or4 fingers between both hands at this point in the video if I was trying to do this. This is a joy to watch this man, Thank you!
The leather you are using is beautiful. I can tell by the way it skives so smoothly and clean. You have cased it perfectly. Wonderful to watch you work. Precision & experience in equal measures!

Wow, this is impressive. Next time i'm frustrated with one of my projects, i'll just come back here to these videos and watch this complex process unfold. :)
It's too bad you don't have a full instructional video series with explanations and narration from start to finish on making saddles because I would buy it in a heartbeat... I've always wanted to make my own, and I have an old saddle that is in really bad shape and can't be repaired. The tree is still good though. It's just cheaper to buy a new one than take it somewhere and have it done. I would strip it and reuse the tree, but I don't have anywhere within 500 miles of me where I could apprentice to learn. I've done some gunbelts, purses, Spur Straps, chaps, etc... But never a saddle. Always seemed too daunting to me. Your craftsmanship is absolutely incredible.
Hi Agar France, a few years ago you posted a video of the creation of a wonderful old-style western saddle, from the 1880s I think. I've been looking for it for a long time but it's no longer there. It was great, especially the reminder of the rigging style that went over the fork, were not nailed down. It would be kind of you to repost it. Thank you
Why didn’t you just do it the other way ? It looks so hard. You are wrili a true artist of my love life you rock ! And I am your biggest fan of your canals ! You are the best one.bye bye
What's the ?"boom"/"tree"? saddle base, made out of? Looks like some kindoff rawhide covered with a resin, judging from the stitches!? Beautifull work.

Para mi el mejor en el oficio hombre metodico. No se le va un detalle por pequeño que sea me gustaria algun dia tener una silla hecha por este señor mi respeto
What about the thing in the beginning that you're nailing the leather to... (The saddle shaped object that looks like varnished rawhide). Where does that come from, and how is that made?
At 00:02:57 are you adhering those pieces of leather to the tree? or nailing them in like you do the following pieces that go under the rider's thigh? Great stuff.
Hey Robert, I usually reply, depending on the question. Also if it's a real specific or long answer you're looking for it's best to send an email. The address is in the video description.
Great job! Also: What type of leather was used? What types of tools were used? Was there metal involved? And is it possible if I can make one for a cardboard horse because I can’t afford a horse?
He puts the leather in water to make it flexible and able to mold. Generally this water is room temp or a little warmer. He only leaves the leather in The water until air bubbles stop coming from the leather
What is your advice to someone who lives on a ranch, can't afford a good saddle, really wants to ride, and is considering making their own saddle? After watching this, I feel way too intimidated to even try. But I thought it would be a good hobby to try to make my own... Is that a terrible idea?
Hi, love your skill, what are the frames made of? Is it fiber glass? Also are the frames made to fit a specific horse or are they just a generic size? Keep it up 👍
I'm not the maker, obviously, but the frame (or saddle tree) was traditionally made of wood (long time ago) and/or rawhide. Fiberglass isn't uncommon now. They come in various sizes for different horses/riders. They also come in different styles made for different jobs. A tree for roping would be different than a tree for barrel racing. You can get custom saddle trees, if you have a horse or rider that is really hard to fit sometimes that is the only option.
Hi Agar, I've been waiting for this series. Thank you so much. Your work is beyond amazing. How long did it take to make this saddle? Not counting the video making aspect of it. What type of French edger do you like and sizes?
Saddle trees are made from a few materials, usually wood covered in fiberglass, but this one actually happens to be a wood tree covered in rawhide. Fairly common style of tree.
To answer a question I read on here about rigging position the most common rigging position is 7/8. If you Google rigging positions there should be pictures that will show you different positions you can set the rigging. If you're making a saddle for somebody it depends on where they want the rigging set at
The making of saddles like this artist does is that they weigh a ton when completed. I understand the heavy ounce leather for the skirting but why so heavy for the rest.
Incredible...what would you charge for that? Once I get my horse I'll need a saddle and that is absolutely beautiful. Looks like your saddles are not only sturdy and made with love but gorgeous. 😍 All the love from Kansas!
This is the kind of trade we should be offering students in schools today. It’s healthy for them to learn such skills.
This. I would give anything to learn how to work with leather.
I’ve never seen anything quite like this. The world needs more handcrafted saddles! Thanks for making a film of the process..
I've always loved horses and the craftsmanship of the saddles. Leather work is beautiful I'm glad this channel exists.

Man what I'd give to follow you around for a week in your shop..... Beautiful work.

How did they do this when the didn't have the frame, would they build a wooden frame ?
Who and how was the frame made that you are applying the leather to?
