What's cheering me up right now is that Ramadan is almost here!! My fiance and his family are Muslim so I really have enjoyed fasting with them in years past and being a part of something so important to them. My fiance and I are pretty introverted so we haven't done many zoom calls, but I think we're going to set up a zoom call within the next few days with his parents and sister so we can all break fast together in the evening. Im excited about it :)

what cheers me up right now is makeup playtime! i've "officially" started dedicating about 45 minutes in the evening just to doll myself up, do a couple looks outside my comfort zone and then have my own little photoshoot! that, the sims, and one hundred years of solitude; i've finally started reading it because i feel like i'll never have this much free time again. so far so good!

Things that are making me happy:
    - Long walks on my property in the sun (yes... winter is finally gone)
    - Salt n Vinegar Almonds (these things make me happier than heck)
    - Day after concert eye makeup & hair (I’ve been really into grungy - I woke up like this after partying - makeup with super messy insane hair)
    - Audiobooks because I can’t seem to sit down to read
    - HLP videos (duh!!)
    - Wearing my favorite perfumes daily because scent memory is a serious thing

What's cheering me up: My friend is going through her over abundant tea collection and trying a new one each day and giving us reviews through snapchat. She even made a little jingle and title card art and I immediately smile when I hear it now.
I've been desperately missing having our libraries open, and trying to substitute audiobooks instead of the physical. The narrator for 'Super Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America' is so amazing and kept me so engaged. One of the first things I want to do after all of this is head to my local secondhand bookstore and wander in it for hours. ❤

For the longest time I’ve hated reading. Maybe hate is too strong of a word, but I think I just always associated it with school and the pressure to read in a certain way. But this year, and especially now, I’ve been trying to read - for fun, for me! I also discovered I really like post-modern fiction and it’s fun to explore my taste in this way.
For ambient music, I really love the Quadrophonic album by Suzanne Ciani. It’s really calming, wavy-watery and spacey but also kinda funky and weird? haha, for me it’s the perfect thing to kill the quiet and get me to focus on whatever I’m reading.
Another instrumental group I like is Monster Rally, and I listen to them even when I’m not trying to focus!

I'm having a hard time with being cheered up to be honest. I work in a grocery store and while I am grateful to still have a job, it's kind of terrifying. People say they're staying home, but I see the same customers several times a week. It's busy all the time and my hands are raw from washing and sanitizer.
Reading is the main thing I do that helps. I try to throw myself into really engaging and entertaining fiction that distracts me and takes me out of my life for a few hours. I'm with you with the ambient music though. I always have some lofi or classical music playing while I'm reading or trying to write. I also like to put on long videos of things like a meadow in spring or the ocean -I play them on my TV which helps when I'm stuck at home on my days off and the weather is bad, which is a lot lately (damn Massachusetts spring)
If you're looking for other places to buy books, I recommend thriftbooks and betterworldbooks. That's where I buy most of mine. The prices are usually good and the shipping is free a lot of the time.
EDIT: I also feel the same way about my computer and phone haha. I think it's an age thing, I'm almost 30 and I didn't grow up with a cell phone and I hate trying to do things like write emails/look things up/etc on my phone when I can just use my laptop.
EDIT 2: (This comment is so long, I'm sorry) I just started crying that you yell out the windows and cheer for workers, so that's where I'm at mentally

I know it sounds odd but a 100% lanolin nipple cream, for breastfeeding, on your hands may help. I'm always a frequent hand washer and they get du and cracked all the time. It's really thick and waxy so I only use it and wear a pair of gloves over it. It's quite possibly the advice my mama has ever given me.
Also of you run out of books I would recommend Gregory Macguire. He's known for Wicked but all of his adult books are reimaginings of fairy tales that are a bit off kilter. I've loved him since I was in middle school because I'm a nerd like that. Alternatively, the chet and Bernie mysteries by Spencer Quinn are hysterical. Bernie is a detective and Chet is his dog and also the narrator.

My saving grace during corona-geddon (as my family has nicknamed it) is my dog. She's a chihuahua-papillon mix and we get to go out for walks. I've been taking her to different parks and trails in my area that previously I've avoided... I have an anxiety disorder and I was afraid of the interactions that I would've experienced in a time before social distancing. Now, I can put a mask over my face, sunglasses over my eyes, and I don't have to put her service gear on. We get to just wander without anyone expecting me to let them pet or play with her. She's really pretty so we normally get more attention than I can handle and more attention than her training should be tested by. She's been so perfect lately and we get to practice tricks now instead of just her normal tasks. I can see her enjoying it too and that makes me cheery 😊

Thank you so much for sharing your work music, I'm listening to it today while I work. I am an artist and I also like to work in coffee shops, it helps me detach from myself and deeply focus on the work. I am struggling to stay focused for several hours a day while working from home… Lately I’ve been feeling down because I am not as productive as I know I could be. I’m still busy all day and I can’t deal with the idea of stopping and not doing anything for half an hour. When I try to force myself to take a break I feel guilty for it and I know that’s not right.

I was hoping that you'd do another video like this! I also LOVE "paper" books. I rarely take the time to sit down and read anymore but when I do I absolutely love it. I love listening to lyric-less music while working as well. I normally listen to something a little "peppier" while working but low-fi is so nice to unwind to. Lately, I find myself listening to pop from the 1990s - 2010s while I do things. I guess it gives me a nostalgic feeling for simpler times pre-virus.
Also cheering me up: TEA, flowers blooming outside, spending more time with my cats, baking, audio books, podcasts, sewing, cleaning (yes, I like to clean), and makeup! Makeup is more enjoyable than ever now because I feel like it's one of the only things left I can control and I've had so much fun playing with my collection.
I feel the EXACT same way about the phone. It makes me feel so old 😂 (I'm in my 30's btw)

I've kept "Gratitude Journals" for more years than I can remember, each day listing at least 5-10 things I was grateful for each day. Hi Hannah, I discovered your channel sometime in 2023, it was your "I BEG OF YOU...PLZ LET ME CONVINCE YOU" fashion video, actually, and am entranced with the way in which you think and how you apply it to the world of beautiful things (and consumerism). I'm currently watching your journey through the extraordinary times that began in 2020 and not for the first time you have made my think of one of the English romantic poets. This time it is Coleridge and his Frost at Midnight poem.
In talking about the kind of music which was helping you write you reminded me of "that solitude, which suites abstruser musings... tis calm indeed! so calm, that it disturbs and vexes meditation with its strange and extreme silentness..."
I'm still trying to draft a comment about the other time you reminded me of English romanticism.
Your videos are wonderful, thanks for sharing parts of your life with us all!

I feel you with the ambient music. (Thank god for Brian Eno!) I have so many unread books on my shelves; Lonesome Dove got me through the first week of this madness! Watching lots of my favorite booktubers! For TV, my DVR is full of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Daily walks with my husband and dog are helping clear my head which feels too muddled most of the time! And I am loving my old Cathe Friedrich exercise DVDs and some great on-line workout channels.

Rewatching comforting TV shows (like one tree Hill, glee, new girl). doing my makeup in the morning- initially I had stopped doing this because working from home seemed like a break. Now that it's keeping up over a month doing my makeup makes me feel a little bit like normal. Cooking has brought me a lot of joy, so has playing the new animal crossing game. And lastly I've been doing a yoga video almost every day and usually based on my mood and needs of the day. That I think has been the most helpful!

Chillhop is doing the best :) I've listened to it for work for years and years :)
I"m a teacher and doing remote work is a little disheartening. I work with transient immigrant students, so knowing I won't see them again in person again is really depressing. However, I've just been throwing myself into my hobbies. I've gotten back into watercolors, I also sew, and have been playing animal crossing all hours that I don't teach. Also, steamed Japanese green tea, good gel pens, and cuddling with my preivously-feral cat who really enjoys having us home all day are good mood boosters too!!!

Hi Hannah. Yes we have been doing it in the UK too for the past 5 weeks. It’s every Thursday here and it’s so emotional when it happens. I’ve been trying to convince my daughter to play her flute one evening but she too embarrassed.
I’m doing a art/craft project each week with family who don’t live with us, a new theme every week. Something to focus on. That’s definitely helping me during the lockdown. Stay safe. Amanda

I’ve been on paid leave for about a month now while my husband is working from home, and something that’s really been nourishing me is taking pleasure in the small things as I can do throughout the day to care for him and our home. He tends to do the heavy lifting in terms of day-to-day chores (I’m more of the “overhaul the pantry storage system over a weekend” partner), but I know that one of the things that really makes him feel cared for is acts of service and right now I’m leaning hard into that!
I’ve been re-reading Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive books, which I can say with the full weight of my nerd credentials behind me are some of the best fantasy books out there today, and they’ve just been keeping my mind engaged and giving me something to be enthusiastic about which is so necessary right now. And they’re LONG, which is ideal for these times 😂

totally agree about wanting to do everything on my laptop! I dislike texting over messaging through apps like FB or WeChat because it's easier to use them on the computer (I am also biased because most of my friends live in different countries than I do, so texting is difficult)! I'm more efficient at typing on my laptop, so when I have more than a few words to say, or I'm engaged in a back and forth, I always switch to communicating through my laptop if possible.

I love real books too. It is the experience of turning the pages and counting how many more until the next chapter. I love literature. I'm a Janite so I like her books as well as her contemporaries. When I lived in Norfolk Va, I used to go "booking". I would go to the second hand book stores and look for books I wanted to read. I used to consume them but with the buying of my first computer, that changed. I as well, do not like writing on that little phone. Most of it is slow going and the dratted auto correct frustrates me. Keep on writing. I like to write, even if it is for mostly myself. I write about my experiences as a child growing up in the mountains of NC. What is cheering me up right now is watching your videos. We are all lifelines for each other. We want to see more of the quilt. And after this time, we will all have something to write about.

A paper book, as we sit and read it, here in the land of lock down, of uncertainty for our loved ones and our future is a touchstone of comfort. There in our hands, heavy and real, not ephemeral at all. Not speculative, but endearingly solid, and fragile at the same time. I take great comfort in them, I like to imagine 1,000 other women throughout time. Their faces tired and worried over the future, their parents, children, grandchildren, and friends far away. I imagine them taking this same small comforting moment to forget for a while the bombs falling, the fields untilled, the question of where tomorrow's meals will come from, and for a little safe while falling into another, safer world where the good guys win, justice is done, and the questions are answered by the final page. Sorry that was a bit longer than expected..Yay books!

That "tinny little video" from the cabin in the woods is one of my absolute favourites :D Isn't that funny? I treasure that kind of hermitty space that is a retreat from daily life life, both geographically and psychically, so I think I was really living my own version of it vicariously through your video.
I went through a phase, years ago, of listening to ambient rainforest sounds whilst working and ocean sounds when trying to get to sleep, and I did find it to help focus or relax as needed. Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene, Equinoxe and Sessions 2000 occupy a similar space for me now, when I want something to both occupy and soothe my brain. More stimulating than ocean sounds, but it does the trick for me :)

Your quilt is beautiful and I was so happy to see it!! Hannah, if you are getting into tea you should start exploring loose leaf tea! It’s so much more full flavored than the kind you get at the grocery store, and you can also support small businesses. We have one in MN called Tea Source that has teas sourced directly by the owner from the people growing the tea. You could order from them online, or there are probably tea shops in LA that are similar. I really enjoy a fancy tea that you can resteep all day long as you work.

If you ever need more atmospheric music to add to the rotation, I highly recommend video game soundtracks! They're designed to help you focus and to melt into the background so the music doesn't compete with your actions in the game. That's the only thing that works for me when I need to focus. Child of Light (soundtrack by Coeur de Pirate) and Ori and the Blind Forest (soundtrack by Gareth Coker) are both go-tos for me.

I am new to UNHhhh and I have to tell you that it has had me laughing to the point of tears all day. This month has been an absolute garbage piece of shit: the virus, feeling like a total WFH failure, my partner being laid off, a very young and much beloved former coworker passing away, and tornadoes in my city, my and neighboring states’ governors being Trump toadie assholes endangering their constituents’ lives... don’t get me wrong, I have SO MUCH to be grateful for, but so much to mourn and so much to be angry about, too. It’s welcome news to learn that I am perfectly capable of setting it all aside and laughing out loud til I think I might vomit. We truly contain multitudes 😂 this has been your best recommendation to date
