      No, not at all: that stance is the classical Mabu stance, and it exist in all chinese martial arts, even in Taichi (the main source used by ATLA creators to invent waterbending). Hama was so surprised because Katara is so strong, that she was able to stop Hama's blood bending without learning blood bending first (she figured it out by herself).
      It's not a "fun fact" you are just overthinking, tha same issue all ATLA's fandom has. You all see things, meanings and connections where there's nothing.

    Such a dark episode...Fitting that this was a Halloween episode!
    For a one time antagonist, Hama was a pretty fantastic character. As we saw, she wasn't always this way, but because of war and how the Fire Nation treated her and her fellow tribesmen, she was warped into this person. It's pretty sad to see honestly, how someone could turn so resentful that they start to do onto others what was done to them. Hama was basically Jet but worse and to the point of no return.
    And despite Hama being locked away again, she still essentially won in the end. She laid out her terms, which was to bring another bloodbender into the world, and she succeeded. That's why Katara cried in the end. She not only fulfilled Hama's twisted wish, but because waterbending is a part of her, this "evil" technique is now a part of her. She was forced to learn a technique that she never wanted to learn and can never unlearn now. To say the least, it's pretty traumatizing. It's also why I've always saw this episode as a loss of innocence, because it's like Katara was tainted because of what she had to do.

      Still though, thinking about it, if Hama actually cared about fighting the war the way she claimed, she could've ended it almost single-handedly after escaping the Fire Nation prison. If she'd gotten into the Fire Lord's palace on the night of the full moon, and attempted to assassinate Ozai, who'd have stopped her? Or even if she'd just gone after the Southern Raiders, for personal vengeance, would they have stood any more chance against her than against Katara?

    2:17 Love this detail: Toph felt prissioners screaming and then they just shut up. Next Hama appears.
    It's quite obvious what probably happened: Hama was in the forest hunting down people. When she was going to hunt the avatar gang she listened the Southern Water Tribe story Katara was telling and realice they weren't Fire Nation's citizens. In the same moment Toph noticed the cries for help and Hama shut them up with Blood Bending to avoid suspicions, and then introduced herself to the team.
    It is not a simple overthinking process (a big issue all the ATLA's fandom has) but REAL hidden details the series give to us.

      How would Hama shut them up when the prisoners were under the mountain and she was behind the Gaang?

    • @codybgamin
      @codybgamin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm delighted that someone else picked up on that nightmare-inducing realization too. That said, I doubt that Hama could shut them up given that the show has sort of established that you can only bend what you can see/sense (rather than being something like the Force, where you picture it in your mind, which is why Toph couldn't theoretically crush the Fire Lord under a giant boulder a continent away or something, even though she sees with Earthbending).
      However, IF that's the case, that actually makes things even scarier, because if she didn't shut them up, who or what did? That said, it's still chilling either way, because Hama just might be powerful enough to override what I said.

    Besides metalbending, sandbending could also be one for earthbenders... Toph didn't seem able to counter it, at least (though she was quite preoccupied at the time and might possibly have figured it out otherwise).
    And what that swamp guy who controlled plants did could count as one for waterbending, too... sort of bloodbending, but with plants instead of people and animals.

    Hama and Jet are very similar. Their anger is justified but it's directed at the wrong people.

    12:15 is one of the coolest moments in bending in this show because we see Katara use an Earthbending technique for her block instead of redirecting the water like we usually see. That's why Hama makes that surprised face there.

    I love the idea that in addition to Katara being a master and better than Hama, Yue is chilling in the sky and hears Hama's little spiel about the power the moon gives her and just nopes the fuck out of letting her draw power/gives Katara a boost. Especially since it comes right off the back of Sokka's reminder that the moon spirit is also someone they all knew and cared about, when they don't actually talk about her all that often unless it's plot-relevant, it's a fun idea. (Also, Yue sent the meteor that made space sword, I don't make the rules.)

Peaceful because they are too Opt and think how smooth the people that can keep up with Aang are.
