Thanks! I've done an old Mew run and redid it on stream a while ago but I plan on tackling it again in gen 1 one day, but I'm not sure when. For Crystal, I'm just looking for the fastest run. I'm not too into the novelty of single run, record whatever footage you can get, and focus on pumping out content. I like the process of optimization and doing some repetition to plan things out. It's not always perfect but I think a tier list with some thought put into beats the brakes off of one and done strategies that are hit or miss. Sometimes you can miss the entire point of a Pokemon if you just do one run but I digress. I used to use that sort of naming convention and after a while switched to 'how fast' because only gullible little kids question if you can actually beat the game but I find it interesting to see people use it. I guess whatever works for that TH-cam dollar lol. This is just a side hobby so I avoid trends and what not and try to just have fun with it.
Thanks for the video! If you can’t guarantee a 2HKO on Blastoise with Thunderbolt but can secure a 3HKO with Psychic, wouldn’t it be better to skip deleting Surf and acquiring Thunderbolt? Surf is just as effective against Charizard, so Thunderbolt is just there to coinflip for the 2HKO on Blastoise.
The flaw is that Psychic isn't a guaranteed 3 hit. There's over a 30% chance that it's 4 turns but you might be right but it would be about the same, imo. Cutting out the Game Corner might be worth looking into if I ever revisit the run but tanking an extra Blizzard might be the tipping point of resetting.
I read in a Japanese interview that they wanted it to be strong and psychic was strong. Water was the original but they didn’t think it was befitting for a legendary to be water/flying or whatever. I think there was a Did You Know gaming about Lugia specifically.
It's easily doable but I'm not sure what it would really acomplish. I find it best to just move on to the next thing. I rarely linger on what ifs or the same run too long. Gotta keep experiencing the next 'mon!
The dragonite attack rocket scream makes me lol every time. Great job! The routing info about the machine part in Kanto was next level. I’m always interested in how you guys do these runs and optimize them.
I like it too. I finally automized it a little as I was doing it manually every time I was editing and I'm trying to get faster at it. The real trick to getting better is modeling the run off the world record speedrun, then just repetition. Playing the game a ton and learning different Pokemon help a lot.
Lugia is one of the only legendaries that really embodies that feeling of inherent power. So many of them have to be over the top to appeal to the young male audience that you lose out on designs that carry quiet confidence.
I think gen 5 is the worse at it. Everything just yells over designed and the fact the box art legendaries can combine for a fusion is just too much imo.
100% agree with this. I hope they go back to a "less is more" style of design in future games, and also having some that look intimidating rather than cute/appealing would be nice too
I guess for faster pokémon, i'd be looking at any Normal types in the Medium fast group? Porygon2 might do alright, getting psybeam at lvl 12. Midgame doesn't have a lot of coverage though, might be tough. On that same theme, maybe Girafirig? It starts with Confusion and Stomp and has a surprisingly high base attack of 80. If Furret had slightly better stats, I'd throw it into the ring too, as it gets all the elemental punches. Those are the ones I'd be looking to challenge the bear king with. After all, 130 base attack is almost too much - it's surely massive overkill most of the time.
I think it’s really cool how you approach these runs like proper speed runs. Also the thing I find frustrating about the rocket takeover part in casual runs for me is that I always end up with a grass type Pokémon on my team and I like to train my team completely evenly so it always takes me forever to knock out endless zubats with sunflora or bellossom.
Yea I really try to optimize as much as I can over the course of 3 runs usually just to keep things on schedule. I think it's an interesting approach because at least half the Pokemon would look pretty bad if you just did one attempt. I remember the Meganium run. The Rocket Takeover wasn't great!
I feel like a potential sleeper for gen 2 could be snorlax. (Pun asides, he would likely be dominant but the low speed make it unlikely he could get the top spot)
Love the pun but Snorlax is synonymous with domination in gen 2. I think if it wasn't on Red's team, we'd see these runs be on average 10+ minutes faster lol. The problem with Snorlax like it was in gen 1 is that it goes second every turn in almost every battle and it just adds up over time.

Given you used Surf so heavily, I'm curious how Palkia would compare in GSC. I guess that lack of an earlygame powerhouse move like Aeroblast is a problem, though.
I'm not at the point for GSC cross gen atm but Palkia will get another shot at Kanto in the future. I think the slow leveling group in general just feels kind of bad and I haven't looked but something like Spacial Rend is never learned at 1.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I usually watch larger channels like chaotic meatball or jrose but lately I've been getting into smaller channels and I've rather enjoyed how much people put into their videos
We'll keep up the amazing work. It was actually poketubers that got me back playing the games. Currently doing a run through of emerald. I forgot how much I hated wattson and rival 2 north of slateport.
Unironically I think one of the best Pokemon for Crystal solo runs is Jynx. You get immediate access to Powder Snow and Lovely Kiss, and very quick access to Ice Punch as well. Plus, Jynx actually got better in Generation 2 compared to Gen 1 (+20 Sp.Atk) and it only really needs something for Steels (HP Fire probably).
I bet it’ll be alright but I get the feeling we’ve just scratched the surface on speed. I think Feraligatr and Granbull can still take the top spots back on a redo. Jynx does look improved. I think I’ll start with Kang for Gen 1 Pokémon though, maybe next!
Lugia is dominant because it get access to great moves from the very start. But good moves are coming with a cost, low pp. I bet that figuring how to plan every usage carefully is really something that comes with a lot of experience and good planning.😮 I wonder how Rival 5 would have been in legacy, because t-tar can be annoying to deal with. 🤔But I'm glad to see Magneton wasn't that trolly. But hey, planning even against a level 17 zubat in the rocket plotline, was showing some peak performance there.😂😂 The plot seriously needs to call youngster Joey do that ,and give the Rockets a taste of thier own medicine 😂😂😂. Watching this run makes me want to try harder for Meganium then what my planing wants me to go.😊 By the way the thumbnail looks amazing,Lugia is kind of looking down on Scizor. Even though Scizor is really amazing, because of swords dance. My bet is that Ursaring is going to be better, even though I'd like to see how optimal Octillrey can be at some point, because I'm after all playing favorite.😊
That's high praise! Love when someone notices the good planning and experience lol. For T-tar, I'm sure Surf would be the answer but it's hard to say if you'd need more levels but I'm not against using candies when I need to. Magneton was a nightmare without Earthquake though. It made at least 1 reset happen on every test run. I think Youngster Joey has a third team if you keep rematching him that's pretty good! If you never watched the Pokemon Crystal AI tournament, I highly recommend it. It's one of the best Pokemon videos I've ever watched! As for Meganium, you can only go so hard on it lol. Grass is just in a bad spot in Johto and there's not much you can do but even a bad run is fun to watch! Just do your thing! I think the Lugia art comes from a Vivid Voltage set. I was disappointed with the lack of good Lugia poses when I was picking something to draw. Octillery is interesting but it's down in stock in my eyes because of Pokemon Go. I do the PvP battles and once upon a time Octillery got an update and I was thinking it was going to be great but it lost me a lot of points lol. I'll look into it! My current line of thinking is Kangaskhan.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 For T-tar surf could have worked even though,it would take time backtrack to the move deleter and use a other move,so maybe earthquake is the answer for it too.🤔 Only testing can tell if it is a great approach or not. But Magenton is just annoying, because it can make an opening for the Hunter or for the Golbat to make sure you won't attack. I have watched the AI tournament video a while back so I don't remember that much. Maybe it's a great time to rewatch it. Lugia looks great, your drawing looks like an original art😁. That's some awesome job done. I'm warping up Meganium runs today no matter what, because I want to do a run with Sausage right after that. Octillrey is not the best Pokemon but,it is an interesting one , especially with gen 5 giving it the moody ability. Even though sniper is really a good alternative as well. But in gen 2 it an okay water type. Kangskhan is going to dominate gen 2, even though I think that Miltank and Tauros can take it's crown.
Surf is just so important for steel types. You can't really handle them at all without it and EQ is so late in the game to the point where EQ has situational use but it was interesting to see how it all fits together. Yea, Meganium is old news. Get it out and focus on the true prize in life. The sausage. As for Kang. I think it's buff from the special split will push it to the next level but Tauros and it's slow leveling group will hold it back. There's a reason I've been holding off on Tauros for so long. I'm just worried it'll fall really short of where I'd like it to be due to the bad leveling group and really rough start.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987I forgot that Tauros is in the slow level up group. In that case a lot of normal types have the potential to beat it,like Kang. Kangskhan is very straightforward and super intuitive to play with. The problematic aspect of the slow level up group is to deduct some kind of a route that will fit most of them ,that would balance experience and time.😁 Earthquake can help some Pokemon, but in Johto it's barely good for Will and Koga. Sausage can make good use of it , because it's his best move. I'm having a lucky run with Meganium thus far, because of some careful planning,if this one would work I'm done with that, because Sausage is the real deal. Sausage is going to be interesting because I already thought about how to route it out 😁, maybe finally sludge bomb will be useful.
Glad to see my favorite mon does a good showing. Still kinda wish it lived up to the Guardian of the seas moniker with typing, but there's always Fool's Gold for that. Also wish it got it's movie theme as a battle theme. But bah, listen to me complaining, Lugia is still the best.
There's an interesting Did You Know Gaming about Lugia's history. Basically, it's not water because they wanted it to be strong and psychic = strong back then but Lugia was created outside the confines of usual Pokemon and it's a good watch. Outside of that, I'm sure it'll be passed very soon but a solid showing no doubt.
aw yes it was Christmas morning, my brother got gold, & I got silver. I don’t think I stopped playing that until I beat it. The whirlpool islands were a nightmare for my little elementary self to figure out.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 i wouldn’t be surprised, steel type means less damage taken for a start. plus Scizors incredible attack stat and movepool are prime for a low level run.
Oh I’m in my 30s but am finishing another degree lol. What I really mean is between being married, other usual adult things, and the weight of full time college, that I find the time when I find it lol.
GOOD OLE CLASSIC prediction Blue defeated at level 62 at 3 hours 6 minutes Red defeated at level 70 at 3 hours 15 min 47 seconds AFTER A BRISK SWIM to cianwood we arrive in the gym to SEE CHUCK BROTHER WOOO!!!
Lugia is an interesting legendary because, unlike an offensive behemoth like Mewtwo, it's inherently built to be a defensive powerhouse. Weirdly enough, all of Ho-oh's and Lugia's stats are just reshuffled version of Mewtwo's stats (two base 90s, one base 106, one base 110, one base 130, and one base 154), so I guess they sorta comprise an unofficial trio much like later Gen legendary duos/trios tend to have reshuffled version of each other's stats. On another note, it's always been a little weird to me how Lugia, the more defensive one of the Tower Duo, is faster than Ho-oh, but I guess that was their idea of balance to avoid making Ho-oh too fast or something?
I'm not sure it's faster than Ho-oh but we'll have to see on the redo but I haven't made it there yet. If Lugia is faster, it's because flying gym giving a boost to Aeroblast in the first minutes of the run and things of that nature but I'm not so sure.
For speed after Gen 1 it’s just like ‘is it higher than 65-70? Yes? Then it’ll outspeed everything eventually’. Lol. In a solo challenge the difference between like 80 speed and 200 speed is negligible so maybe the allotted stats to other areas will help out!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 indeed it is. I started my first Python class and I was wondering what language and resources are you using to create your overlay? I want to make on also and I just don’t know where to start. Is there a video that explains it to a degree?
It's vue/html/css for it all. I just kind of picked it up looking through the Parasect race stuff years ago but here's a severely outdated Scott video talking about basics. Personally I use a lot of computing and methods to make stats accurate and they just inflate more as you go up in generations but displaying a value from Gamehook is covered here. vimeo.com/716111075 Remember, this is severely outdated. Outside of the concept and mapper.properties. being how you'd use data in properties, Gamehook is dramatically different in terms of what things are called and how it works. I guess you'd have to copy code from the video to even start but this is a relic of the past and just something I had bookmarked but everything else is just gone. He just packages his overlays into one thing. If you are really desperate, here's a 'race package' from Speedrunner 0218's community race he did last year. A disclaimer is that I have no idea what his code looks like, how complicated it is, or anything of that nature but I think you could just pick apart the index skeleton at bare minimum. Reverse engineering and some lengthy and frustrating ChatGPT conversations took me really far! drive.google.com/file/d/1_dSv5cws8yeECli6s5bpNeBxZLe8PxPL/view
I thought about it while you can learn the stuff from there, I’ll make an unlisted video in the near future going over a base overlay. Expect it to start being in the description in maybe 2-3 weeks and I’ll make a community post about it.
What's the original Crystal games? Even in Gold/Silver their learnsets are the same and unchanged to the third version. The fun fact is that gen 2 is the only generation they start with those moves.
Also gym leader matt i think your overlay is made incorrectly If you look AT YOUR OVERLAY VS ENEMY OVERLAY you can find that there is differences in the ordering of your overlay when you CLEARLY PROGRAMMED the numbers THE SAME way on both ends I noticed this bug when i SAW morty n was like when the heck did haunter have 64 spec def n 33 special
In an interview I saw on Did You Know Gaming, Lugia was supposed to be Water originally but was changed to Psychic because Psychic = strong. Lugia in general is an interesting Pokemon. It was designed by one guy outside of the normal confines of other Pokemon.

Wattson is the true wall in Gen 3. I hope to have optimized Emerald runs by the end of the…year maybe lol. Some difficulties with the encoded rom.
It's now gotten to the point where I can't play Crystal and go to Cianwood without thinking of "Chuck Bruuuther!" Lol
Perfect, lol.
Great run man! Entertaining as always. Also, real one
Appreciate that, brother.
Great run!
Thanks! It was solid for sure but took a bit to get it right.
Also Lugia was great but like its Lugia, surely no box legendary would be worse than some bear you find in a cave.
I bet that figuring how to plan every usage carefully is really something that comes with a lot of experience and good planning.😮
I wonder how Rival 5 would have been in legacy, because t-tar can be annoying to deal with.
Watching this run makes me want to try harder for Meganium then what my planing wants me to go.😊
By the way the thumbnail looks amazing,Lugia is kind of looking down on Scizor.
The problematic aspect of the slow level up group is to deduct some kind of a route that will fit most of them ,that would balance experience and time.😁
Earthquake can help some Pokemon, but in Johto it's barely good for Will and Koga.
Nice. Is it going to be crystal or legacy? I think one of the best changes in legacy was they renamed it to sausage bomb.
I love gen 2 thanks again always enjoy the content real one
Appreciate it, brother.
Lugia is cool
I have an extra long weekend so im able to watch this 500 times over
500 times at the video length would take over 10 days to watch. The only thing you've confirmed is that you are awful at math lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 it was an exaggeration I can watch the video around 40-50 times today
Same as Seafoam. I learned my lesson by then and had a map.
Here to digress some tangents!
Hopefully not too many! I’m going to rewatch the video sometime. Not completely refreshed lol.
I'm not big on fast food but Wendy's ghost pepper chicken sandwich is fire
Yea it's pretty tasty!
You are right
beating red at that level tells me all i need to know, holy crap thats impressive.
It was a good one. I think the Scizor redo could do it at level 58 lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 i wouldn’t be surprised, steel type means less damage taken for a start.
plus Scizors incredible attack stat and movepool are prime for a low level run.
It’s low on the list for redos but hopefully I can stream some crystal in the future. School is a bit hectic but I’ll get the time eventually lol
ah school, now i feel old LMFAO!@@GymLeaderMatt1987
Oh I’m in my 30s but am finishing another degree lol. What I really mean is between being married, other usual adult things, and the weight of full time college, that I find the time when I find it lol.
GOOD OLE CLASSIC prediction
Blue defeated at level 62 at 3 hours 6 minutes
Red defeated at level 70 at 3 hours 15 min 47 seconds
AFTER A BRISK SWIM to cianwood we arrive in the gym to SEE CHUCK BROTHER
WOOO!!!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Oh, I meant in terms of base speed 😝 Lugia is 110, and Ho-oh is 90.
For speed after Gen 1 it’s just like ‘is it higher than 65-70? Yes? Then it’ll outspeed everything eventually’. Lol. In a solo challenge the difference between like 80 speed and 200 speed is negligible so maybe the allotted stats to other areas will help out!
Tombstoner brother!
Hell yea, brother.
On your advice I did indeed grab a sodie pop
Did you sip it?
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I did because if I don’t it starts to overflow because it turned to slush in my fridge.
The best kind! Happens around 50 minutes in the freezer.
Lmao the Wendy’s chicken sandwich 😂
It's good!
Personally I use a lot of computing and methods to make stats accurate and they just inflate more as you go up in generations but displaying a value from Gamehook is covered here.
vimeo.com/716111075
Remember, this is severely outdated.
Fun fact: In the original Crystal games both Ho-Oh and Lugia have lost their signature moves: Sacred Fire and Aeroblast. 😂
What's the original Crystal games? Even in Gold/Silver their learnsets are the same and unchanged to the third version. The fun fact is that gen 2 is the only generation they start with those moves.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I mean when you find them at Level 60. Both legendaries don't have their signature moves😂
Missed the last video and I'm late here, but here's the engagement comment
Glad you enjoyed!
Also gym leader matt i think your overlay is made incorrectly
If you look AT YOUR OVERLAY VS ENEMY OVERLAY you can find that there is differences in the ordering of your overlay when you CLEARLY PROGRAMMED the numbers THE SAME way on both ends
I noticed this bug when i SAW morty n was like when the heck did haunter have 64 spec def n 33 special
I think the shortened versions confused you. Spe is speed. Spa/sod is special attack/defense.
I really miss that jazzy outro and rainy yellow tunnel
I think you being the only person to mention it in like a year cements my decision lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 😂
U missed out last rival battle in mt moon
Why would I do an optional, out of the way fight in a run whose goal is to beat the game in the fastest time?
Fair … I just thought that battle might of counted as completing the game
It doesn't. You'll never see it on anyone else's Crystal streams or any speedrun of the game lol. The rival is insignificant 99% of the time in gen 2.
I have a sodie pop today ❤
Nice. What kind? Chicken?
Ahaha nah just a coke@GymLeaderMatt1987
Shadow Lugia Waluigi run when
Already done that in October lol.
Scizor really is a monster
Yea the funny thing is that I made a mistake in routing and it could probably save at least a minute or two on the Red fight alone.
CHUCK BROTHER
He toss that boulder far!
What if i wasn't a real one?
That’s up to you and god.
I tried this but Red’s Pikachu beats my Lugia.
Earthquake makes it go splat.
It does but Hooh the Fire type isn't really that great for a solo run and is kind of pure crap.
Fire types are GREAT in general 2.
Class act using pokemon tcg music in your video
I always try to add it in! Hits that good nostalgia.
HP is green
Be specific. You are commenting on an old video expecting me to know the context in a two word sentence.
It's not the size of the PP that matters, it's how you use it.
You got that right!
Don't listen to GameFreak's lies! Lugia is a Water type!
In an interview I saw on Did You Know Gaming, Lugia was supposed to be Water originally but was changed to Psychic because Psychic = strong. Lugia in general is an interesting Pokemon. It was designed by one guy outside of the normal confines of other Pokemon.
Damn, I wish TM39 could smooth over my small PP problem :(
Being swift is the last thing you need with your problems lol.
Without watching yet i, I think lugia isn't offensive enough to be number 1
Probably not on a complete tier list.
Bro what is your accent. Nothing against you at all. I enjoy all the vids but your accent sounds so Hollywood south movie created that I have to know where it’s from
Never heard of that but yea, Deep South, Bible Belt lol.

Yea! Mario was Zubat.
