  • Can you believe I've never played any Stronghold game? This is the first time I'm trying it. This week I'm trying Stronghold HD, Anno 1404, and Theme Hospital and the video that gets the best response will be made into a series. Get Stronghold (or any other game) on GOG using this referral link to support: af.gog.com/en/... Thank you!
    #Nostalgiasm is a series about gaming nostalgia and #NostalgicGaming where I jump back to a game from the 'Nostalgic Period of Gaming', 1995-2006, and either relive my old memories or experience something I missed out on. I play through the initial gameplay for about 1 hour plus to see if I still enjoy the game.
    #Stronghold HD purchased on Steam:
    store.steampowe...

    First time playing Stronghold! After this is Anno 1404 then Theme Hospital. If the videos/streams get enough attention then I'll make them into series. Get Stronghold (or any other game) on GOG using this referral link to support: af.gog.com/en/game/stronghold?as=1715648857 Thank you!

      GamerZakh You're correct. The desert version is the second game in the series Stronghold Crusader. There's an HD version of that as well and the first title that contained multiplayer mode. Stronghold 1 got multiplayer later with the HD release.

      Also, even if you end up not having a series on this, I can send some files for a future city-building doctor episode.

      @JuriAmari Yeah, looking it up it looks like Crusader is the one my friend was playing. And it's interesting, is Stronghold viable for a city-building doctor? Hmm, I think I have to learn more before I can figure that out.

    Finally, a game that i'm better at than Zakh (The Stronghold Crusader basically but they're all similar).
    You'll get the hang of it pretty fast. It's actually my favourite RTS. You will see why as you learn the tricks. Just click and right-click EVERYTHING.
    Advice:
    1)Build the granary on the opposite side of the keep from the stockpile. That way bread production will be streamlined to the max. I don't know how this game has in but Stronghold Crusader had optimal bread production with 3/1/8 (3 farms, 1 mill, 8 bakeries). Having granary just "next door" means the only "dead-time" is farmers bringing in the crops.
    2)Learn the hotkeys. It will save a lot of time and frustration due to wrongly clicking in the midst of some battles. CTRL+Num to group troops (and hit the Num to select them afterwards), M for market, G for Granary, H (I think?) for Keep, B for barracks (as you can see they're mostly the first letter of the building).
    3)Workers respawn easily, so don't feel too bad for losing 1-2. Of course, a siege can mean losing every single worker and getting your economy wrecked, so watch out for that. But a few workers are nothing to fuss about (this sounds so mean, doesn't it?).
    4)ALWAYS use spacebar for the walls. ALWAYS. It's horrible to use up several hundred of a resource and have the enemy just waltz into your castle through a little hole. Also for tightly constructed castles (which is not really recommended in case of siege, as fires are easily your worst enemy in this game, but it's sometimes required).
    5)Maybe this is not going to be the case too soon but please be aware of the resources that are depletable. Overhunting or heavy deforestation can leave you resourceless.
    6)Further on, learn the pros/cons of all the troops. I have had the cheapest units in the game save my behind several times and i've had literally legions of troops obliterated (both mine and enemies') by cheaper and better used soldiers. (Quick example: 200 crossbows at the right bottleneck can kill over 1000 melee troops - including fast-moving troops).
    7)Use the instant effects of the fear factor to your advantage. Also the other instant effects, such as dismissing workers (which provides large amounts of spare villagers that can be quickly trained into troops if necesarry).
    Keep this series up, you will get the hang of it and will love this game. Also, it's been 2 years today since i finished C3, with your help. Thank you for that.

    I love some of the easter egg lines in this game. If you play for 2 hours you hear. "what about a snack my Liege?" Later, unsure about how long, you hear "You have been playing for a very long time Sire" Play when the clock strikes midnight: "It's getting kind of late Sire. Aren't you tired?" And one line I only heard once, I was playing on December 25th. "Merry Christmas Sire".
    Have anyone heard any other lines than those in this game?

  • @PlokHR
    @PlokHR 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Ah, Stronghold and all of its hidden little things... It'd really be your style.
    As for some general tips:
    - the game correctly gives the advantage to archers who are on a higher position
    - you can manually order the Lord to kill an enemy (even if it's a mere wolf), but use that rarely. You can't tell him to move to a specific spot, unless you're targeting a spot inside the keep (except for the very basic Saxon Hall type). You can use the latter to defend him from intruders while having soldiers closer to the entrance..
    - a steady production of food can be made with: 3 wheat farms, 1 or 2 windmills, and at least 8 bakeries.
    - if the mission allows you to and you have the resources and space, try to make a varied food production (e.g. not just apples or bread), as certain missions like to set disasters that affect a certain farm type, sometimes very often. These are always set to affect something you already have just to make things challenging, unlike Neptune's rage in Caesar III that occurs even if you never touched the water ;). Luckily, this does not affect hunters.
    - in the military campaign, you'll also have the sort-of obligation to maintain military production alongside the standard economy. The workers in charge of this are slow (particularly the fletcher who creates bows and crossbows), so keep their workshops and the armoury as close to the stockpile to bypass this.
    - the marketplace is your friend! It can save you from the cobwebs in the treasury.
    - you can set brutal taxes as long as you balance it out with food rations, religion and inns (which is pretty realistic :D )
    Some of these tips won't be applicable in the early military missions where your techtree isn't fully unlocked, but you'll get there eventually. You can also try the Free Build mode (in the economic campaign menu) to familiarize yourself with what each building does and how.

    Haha! Never seen stronghold either. Just gotta love those tree animations XD (edit1) After a while of laughing at the trees I gotta say I actually really love the art style. The little dogs with the hunters and all! Just amazing attention to detail! This is what's so great in old games. They can't do everything perfectly but the stuff they know, they'll go all the way and try their best to make good games even if it's just these little things that really don't matter but probably took forever to code. Nowdays the hunting would be an addon for 14,99 and the dogs as a cosmetic DLC only for preorder customers 4,99. :(

    Nice!! Played this game a year ago (not full campaign but 3/4 I'ld say).
    Its a nice medieval rts, for its time it has a nice strategy system. Especially the arrows (every arrow's flying direction is calculated, so a physics engine more or less).
    And nice ANNO sounds awesome, too! Only played 2070 but really enjoyed it.

      NKirkwall Sadly in the end stronghold becomes a very easy game if you know what to do I only had trouble with the opening levelling of the rat (the one where you have to save that lord form the huge rat attack ) then after I beat the rat I found the snake very easy. The first pig level was too easy I think then ...the pigs fort.... I stop playing for months because of that level but then after that level i did not have to restart a level until I had to kill the pig and wolf. It is a good game but I found it to easy going in some parts.

    Not sure if this was mentioned in the comments but in Stronghold you can actually order your Lord to flight. You cannot order him to move however, unlike in Crusader. Of course do so sparingly, as if he dies you lose. But he can be of help in desperate situations!

    If you need to set food rations to an unpopular level, you can lower the taxes to balance out, later also 'instruments of fear' or religion help you keep the happiness.
    Usually, never build to much buildings of one type, keep an eye on free workers.
    Also, you placing should be:
    Houses by the castle - protected, free space for storage fields, productions between storage and final storage (the armory) and the castle walls could be way out as first line of defence and another for the production and houses.

    You absolutely don't need all your buildings inside your castle, and it's not the way the game is meant to be played, especially if your land is small. Woodcutters and hunters camps are very expendable cheap buildings, you can have them outside your walls..their workers need to go outside the gates to work anyway

    Really, I'm disappointed in your playstyle of this game. Don't get my wrong I think your a fairly good streamer, It just the lack of concideration for your people, I'm disappointed in. and Darn this tutor is much better then the ver that came with my game.

      Are you saying my playstyle is bad in a game that I've been playing for less than 1 hour?

    • @WiccaRobin
      @WiccaRobin 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry but yes, playing for less then one hour doesn't have anything to do with it. I'm probably being over picky here, because I'm talking about Your style, in the game. most people probably over look it, but to me or for me, the fact you didn't even stop to consider what all your people were doing when you attacked the wolves and even when those men attacked you did the same thing, you didn't even think about getting them to safety. To me when I'm playing all my people are important, not just winning the game, but bring as many of them as I can with me, is just as important as winning, you did nothing to try to metigate them, during the time of the wolves or the men you lost a lot of your people, both times. and to me that is as much as a loss as losing. maybe your only interested in winning, so to you i'm crazy. the fact you didn't try to secure them, but just left them to their work. I don't know maybe you can't do that in this game. I have a version of stronghold, but it has a really terrrible tutor. I played the game about 3 times and quit. but if the game doesn't give you a way to protect your people in times of battle, to me its not a very well made game. I assume it must have a way to protect all the people in times of war.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Getting them to safety? As far as I'm aware you can't control the villagers? That isn't about not being aware of what's going on, it's my understanding of the mechanics at that point. How do you get people to safety? That was never explained anywhere. I thought of getting them to safety but I didn't see how it was possible to do that. In Age of Empires there's a bell button. And then you yourself say that you don't know if it's possible to do that in this game. You are now criticising my playstyle for what could actually be a limitation of the game. That isn't fair. Even if there is a way to 'call back' villagers to the keep, I am not aware of that mechanic yet. It has nothing to do with my playstyle or decision making.
