    ''I would recognise you in total darkness, were you mute and I deaf. I would recognise you in another lifetime entirely, in different bodies, different times. And I would love you in all of this, until the very last star in the sky burnt out into oblivion''.”
    - Song of Achilles
    I think it sums this up just perfectly.

      No Bronte text is 'com' at all. Barely even 'rom'. They are dark, gothic, tragic love stories.

    I find it amazing that almost all of the Jane Eyre versions have got the dog Pilot wrong, what they are showing is generally a cute doggie compared to what Bronte describes in the book (I think what's originally meant is a huge English Mastiff). Only the 2006 BBC version (the one starring Toby Stephens as Rochesters) gets it remotely right by having an Irish Wolfhound play Pilot. This dog is meant to be fearsome, not a nice little lapdog...

    • @shawniechew
      @shawniechew 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      In the book Pilot is described as probably being a Great Dane, as the colors match with the description, however the breed of dog is not actually mentioned, a Great Dane fits best historically as they were hunting dogs in Yorkshire where Bronte lived and was used in the 1970 and the 1973 versions of the films. This dog is a probably a Golden retriever - Labrador, which could also be what Pilot is in the book as they are Gun dogs. But to be honest Pilot is whatever breed you imagine him as, as in the book he is only fearsome to Jane as the book is written in her perspective.

    • @christianealshut1123
      @christianealshut1123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@shawniechew Well, I always assumed that he was a mastiff because Charlotte Bronte knew that breed from her sister Emily owning one ("Keeper"). At any rate Pilot should not be a cute doggie (in the 1983 version he looked like a Border Collie!) so I thought the Irish Wolfhound in the 2006 version was quite appropriate.

    • @janebishop5885
      @janebishop5885 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Without a doubt, that while some others are good, nothing compares to the 84 version with Dalton and Clark. Zelah Clark was the Jane epitome and Timothy Dalton, the perfect Rochester, as close to the book as possible to obtain in the world of mortals. My favorite and never can be exceeded. The 2006 version with Stephens may be a good movie for modern times but it was not Jane Eyre and I found too many parts just entirely inappropriate for the book. I even had the sense that Stephens had no concept of the character and perhaps had never read the book. Dalton's internalized Byronic hero character, got it and embodied Rochester. ... and Zelah, the overwhelmed but intelligent and strong and moral Jane was perfection. Wonderful!!!

    Both Mia and Michael are great as Jane and Rochester (yes, Michael is way too hot but who cares) I think the problem with this adaptation is the script, to capture the real depth of the characters in only two hours is impossible and they left out many key parts of the book (this being the ending of the movie felt too abrupt) .. This should have been a mini series at least, other than that, great cast, cinematography, and a beautiful score by Dario Marianelli

    I read another book that was extremely popular in the 1860’s It was St. Elmo, by Agusta Evans. This was the story of a little girl, raised by her Grandfather, near Chattanooga in the Cumberland Mountains. The Grandfather died and the little girl was on the train, going to an Orphanage which derailed, killing and injuring a lot of people.A kind woman took the child to her home and decided to raise the young girl. She had a Son about 19 years old who hated the child, and was rude and surly to the child. This book is all about how the young girl grew up to be a young woman, and even though the young man was older than the girl a lot older, this is the story of how he falls in love with her. It has many twists and turns and I read it one Summer when I got bored at my Grandmother’s house. Very Gothic setting, and it reminded me of the zbronte sisters books I often thought that this book would have made a great Movie!!!

    This was a masterpiece with the exception of the casting for Jane Eyre. The role was beyond the depth of Mia Wasikowska's acting abilities whose portrayals came across as immature, poorly chosen or incorrectly rehearsed. Her 'get out clause' when she's out of her depth is 'this is my interpretation of the character'.

      Did we watch the same movie? Mia is my favorite Jane and I’ve seen every version. Nothing about her performance is “bad.”

    The worst adaption of Jane Eyre ever.

    His idea of love to his mentally challenged wife was to lock her away and cheat on her (rather than send her way ... what what, no 3rd choice? For better or for worse??) . When Jane came back to him, after his wife committed suicide, she should marry him, lock him up, and then take the missioary man down the aisle, without telling him of her shameful past. It is the same thing. This movie is messed up, brainwashing women and men on their relationship roles and ideas of "love". Jane was an idiot for ever going back. Evidentally, inept spouses should be locked away ... did she learn nothing??

      True! I saw Jane Eyre the BBC Serie. It was much nicer Bit even there I thought why is she doing this? This man made his Wife a Prisoner and a dark Secret. Sometimes i thougt he mykenische made his Wife Insane. A narcacisst would do the Same. Also the triangulatuon with his neighbor Lady was just Uggh. Thats not what real love looks like. Thats what a narcacisst would do to his victims.

      You have to remember that the actual story was written in 1847 when mentally ill people didn’t get much help.
