My family built the Panama Canal from surveying all the way through its construction. As a kid, I never understood why my grandma would get so angry whenever she saw Carter. She had an entire room of her house dedicated to the Panama Canal construction from the family photos and tools used in each photo floor to ceiling wall to wall like a museum. Carter took something very special to a lot of Americans.

The tarriff plan will evidently lead to high inflation, the high inflation is a significant reason why most retirees have sleepless nights. Nearly 7,100 U.S. military were killed and 29 ships and 615 aircraft were destroyed taking Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands in WWII. It was, and still is, a strategic supply and communications line between Australia, Taiwan, and the U.S. That is why Japan fought so hard to keep it losing around 35,000 troops. In April 2022, during the Biden Administration, the U.S. lost Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands to China. At that time, the China-Solomon Islands Defense Security Agreement was signed, and China basically bought the Government. The U.S. State Department, DoD, and U.S. Intelligence Agencies were asleep at the switch. This did not happen overnight, but over a period of many months. To make it worse, Australia actually helped the Chinese take control of Guadalcanal -- unknowingly. I tried to warn U.S officials, but heard crickets. Then after the agreement was signed, the U.S. Government went into panic mode, but it was too late, it's a done deal. I would be concerned about the Panama Canal. After working 40+ years in the U.S. Military and Department of Defense, I don't think our defense, diplomatic or intelligence agencies have the capability to really know what is going on. They are too politicized and not doing their jobs. Canada can stay Canada. There may be a better argument for Greenland. Almost no one lives in Greenland (pop. about 57,000). It can be turned into a military base if used wisely. I would not pay much for it. Around 5,600 Americans died building the Panama Canal, and around 20,000 French.

Oh im going to love this one, how are American ports "inferior"? bringing in the largest container ship is a crane height, and dredge (this is a state situation more than a port) situation. Certain ports do more inter work than just off loading containers. example: LA ports just take off containers and let them sit till trucks come, ny/nj port take off containers and put them on trains, and such. year over year our ports have done more and more tonnage. our ports are in top 25 moved tonnage, not in the top 50 in "efficiency" because we do more than just take off box. so stfu on your lack of understanding how ports even work. watch a show called " whats going on with shipping" hes done many videos on this, and yes ila probably striking in jan 15.

@ okay so china, is a communist country they do basically whatever they want. So if they go “ we want big port “ they just go this land port! And they honestly if they wanted to could do that to the whole coast. Let’s be honest there, they have that ability in china and out of china they just do loans with ridiculous rates and hope to take the land / project over getting paid. Look it up it’s crazy, they are basically loan sharks. Anyway our ports are OLD , all of our coast is already brought up so expanding is REALLY HARD. Fun fact : in nj there’s a port that tried expanding but can’t because , a blue owl nest is the trees. So that owl gets 5 acres of waterfront property to itself. Do you think that would stop china ? Again not the ports fault but the states regulations constricting the ports. Also by modernized equipment, you mean robotic cuz LA/Long Beach is basically fully automatic and still not “ amazing “ on the efficiency chart.

These guys don’t know a thing about the history of the canal or the relationship between Panama and the U.S. In fact, any Panamanian knows more about it than they do, because in school, we have a subject called "Relations Between Panama and the United States."
Ignorance #1: "Oh, thousands of Americans died." Please, it was a minority. The ones who died were mostly Chinese, Africans, Indians, Jamaicans-you name it. Do some actual studying.
Ignorance #2: "The treaty expired, so you can’t claim anything." Sure, you can negotiate fees, but that’s about it.
Ignorance #3: The U.S. paid Panama peanuts for the canal when they were running it. They raked in a ton of money, so what are they even complaining about?
My opinion: The U.S., under the Democrats, became a global laughingstock with their woke leftist agenda and insane spending. Now, Trump needs to reignite the flames of nationalism, patriotism, and protectionism, which makes sense.
Same thing happened with El Salvador and Bukele-Trump talked so much nonsense at first, but then he realized Venezuela was the real problem with all the criminals and everything else. And later, he came around.
I wouldn’t stress over the rhetoric. Words are just words, and politics is just politics.

Sorry for your ignorance, but you can never take back what is not yours, and that was for sure not lazy negotiating, the United States recognized that continued control of the canal would bring more diplomatic and financial burdens than benefits, so it agreed to hand over its operations to Panama, that is what the treaties were for, the neutrality, the operation, and the Panama Treaty itself, which made Panama an ally of the USA, the initial treaty signed by Philippe-Jean Bunau-Varilla, who was French and acted as Panama’s diplomatic representative, and United States Secretary of State John Hay, was widely regarded as unfair to Panama, even Hay himself admitted that
Moreover, the treaty granted treaty rights over the land in exchange for paying the new country of Panama $10 million and a $250,000 payment each following year, which was even less than the original treaty lease proposed to Colombia for $10 million annually, the Colombian Senate unanimously rejected that earlier treaty because it was deemed insufficient compensation, a threat to sovereignty, and perpetual; so the USA cannot take what was never theirs, Hay-Bunau-Varilla with panama were merely concession treaty rights over the land, not sovereign rights, it is not like the USA lost Hawaii, Alaska, or Louisiana in 1999
The new treaty negotiated in 1977 limited the time the USA could occupy the land and operate the Panama Canal, setting a deadline for full transfer by 1999, Panama now has a new set of locks built and paid for entirely by Panama through toll revenue and loans, the initial Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty allowed the USA to build the canal in exchange for occupying the land and supporting Panama’s separation from Colombia, however, the original treaty created burdens for Panama, even before the canal, it was clear this was the most important piece of land for Panama’s economic and environmental development
The canal zone had mixed impacts, it spurred economic growth in some areas but caused disproportionate urban expansion in Panama City, poor planning, and limited access to key regions, the only thing the USA can invoke is the principle of reserve in the Torrijos-Carter Treaties, this principle was added to ensure Senate approval during President Carter’s negotiations, it allows the USA to act in defense of the canal’s neutrality, but according to the International Law Commission of the United Nations, this principle is rarely invoked because it grants unilateral powers to one party in implementing a treaty
Panama had unfair concession contracts with China, which brought limited economic benefits to the country, many of these agreements, including contracts for two major ports in Balboa and Cristobal and CCT in the Atlantic, were signed before the canal zone was fully transferred and under corrupt political conditions, the USA, under the principle of reserve, could theoretically activate the right to defend the neutrality of the Panama Canal as outlined in the Torrijos-Carter Treaty, Panama should review and potentially eliminate these contracts with China, replacing them with agreements with state port enterprises like DP World from Dubai or PSA Ports of Singapore; cuz the United States does not view any private company in China as truly private, seeing them as extensions of the Chinese government, especially in critical infrastructure projects

These guys all forget one thing. It's called the Panama canal. It's in Panama, a sovereign & independent nation. It's not right, legal or moral for any leader of another nation to talk about "taking" it. It does not matter how it was built, who gave it away or what, it is a national asset to Panama.
These are the same folks arguing about Taiwan belonging to China or Crimea belonging to Russia, but they are ok talking about taking the Panama canal or buying Greenland. How insulting, how 1700's to be talking about buying a nation. Total disregard for the people.

    • @jasonbritt2497

What if the people of Canada vote to become part of the US? What if Denmark sells Greenland to the US?
How is either of those archaic? In Canada case what more example would you need to show the choice of the people than to let them decide their own fate?
Greenland is already owned by Denmark as a territory. Would you be saying the same thing if the US sold Guam to Australia? I think not…
What about in the case of embassies? They are in foreign countries but it’s US soil there on treaties…. If the US violates those treaties then does the host country not withhold the right to expel them? Almost the same case with the canal. Panama was seceded the Canal under treaty and conditions. The canal was US soil until it was handed to Panama under that treaty which had conditions.
You can only violate treaty conditions for so long before the right leader steps in and calls you on it.

Repairs? US none since 1999, before that the US collected the monies, thus was in charge as well as any expenses. After 1999 Panama paid for the expansion of a new canal, not built by the US. Venzeula is already fallen, Brazil has become completely corrupt to a point of shame...Argentina is too poor, and i believe in a negative trade deficit with America, however, Colombia , might actually be for South America, the greatest ally, where there is a trade surplus with! , why Biden and Blinkin would encourage trade with the pacific nations over America is amazing. It is time for the US to start to invest, and become present in a certain way, with Central and South America , as well as Africa...because if we neglect them, the Chinese will swoop in. . . Colombia has a solid Criistian system, which might be the one good reason they could become the best Ally for the US in all of South America... and there are opportunity for more trade there, with very well educated Colombians, who speak VERY good English...also could be a place to actually bring in Immigrants who actually want to assimilate to the United States, UNLIKE other places that despise the USA. Not 5,600 Americans. Their number was 1,000. The misinformation here is ridiculous. The French started the canal in 1881-1889 where 22,000 people died(no Americans). The US phase started 1904-1914 and 5,600 died of which 1,000 were Americans, the majority deaths were Panamanian and Caribbean

Only 300 of 5 600 who died were Americans citizens, most workers were from Caribian islands, local area, Africa and Europe. During when Americans build canal.
During railway project and French canal project about 200 American citizens died of 25 000 death doll of French canal project.

President Trump should consider reestablishing U.S. military bases in Panama, similar to those from the past-Fort Clayton, Howard Air Force Base, Rodman Naval Base, Fort Davis, and others. The mission of these bases would be:
    1. To prevent the passage of immigrants heading to the U.S.
    2. To counteract Chinese influence and control of the Panama Canal.
The Panamanian government could continue administering the Canal, while the U.S. focuses on security and support. This would be a win-win for everyone! President Trump could propose a referendum to the Panamanian people on this issue-I bet they’d be interested!

Great idea. The problem is Panama is neutral and having bases here is not necessary. The embassy pretty much is already one and they already do all of that counter intelligence from there.
