I know there's a lot of nostalgia for football in the 1980s, but... those who were around at the time will know that this game was probably one of the nastiest in English football history, off the pitch. The replay may well have been worse. For those of you lamenting this era, you have to ask yourself if you would really prefer it. Yes, the game is rotten now. And I say this as a Liverpool supporter, and the Champions League win the other year meant nothing and was a sterile event. But the game now is, at least, safer than what it was. Games between us and United in the mid 80s were unreal. It's great looking back 35 years later and saying they were great occasions, but there were some truly awful incidents that took place as well. This season in particular was a nasty violent 9 months. The fact that my parents allowed me to attend this match with my 14 year-old mates is baffling. Given what happened that day, and what happened 4 days later, I'm surprised Social Services were not contacted.
It was evil. The stuff going on between the 2 sets of fans was unbelievable. My Dad went to this and he said it was exciting and terrifying at the same time!!

@@erniescullion8452 We just have a different view of football, Eric. I was actually referring to the win over Spurs, but the same principle applies, to a lesser extent, to that competition you mention. The fact you refer to it as UCL just shows we have very different perspectives on football now.
I would still take this game in a heartbeat. As I always said -it you went looking for trouble you would find it. if you didn't you would usually not even see it. 90% of games saw nothing. People exaggerate in these books written. Liverpool's mob were actually more into drinking and lifting labels. Which is ironic as on the continent we got this rep after Brussels for being hardcore but we never were. Cockneys were always the fighters.
Never saw as much fighting at a game as I saw at this one, gotta be most violence I've seen at a united / Liverpool game and I followed united home and away during 80s
What possessed them to have it at Goodison then Maine Rd? Hooligans wet dream!! In the actual cities of the clubs! Maybe Villa park and move our game to London. No stopping at the service stations on the way and close the pubs in Birmingham!
Football those days was superior in every aspect - players looked better, the game much more interesting, and the playing style showed strength and artistry that has disappeared over the years.
We probably had the best record of any team against Liverpool in the late 70’s and 80’s. I would have swapped all of the victories against them for a league championship in that period though!!
I wouldn't, not a chance. Those games when we beat them and were not supposed to, made that period of football so brilliant. 1977 through till 1985. There were so many highs that made winning the FA Cup in 77, 83 and 85 so magnificent. ABL. GGMU. #GlazersOutNow
@@KryptonitetoallBSyou know what, I totally agree with you. I first went to Old Trafford in November 1985. A 1-1 draw against Watford. Alan Brazil for us and Colin West for Watford. VAR crap and no atmosphere. Give me this every bloody time. Although I actually started following us in the 1983/84 season. The first thing I remember about watching United was a 4-1 victory against Coventry at Old Trafford in April 1984. On MOTD.
@@mrkipling2201It's weird in that it feels like there are 3 distinct periods being a United fan. In the 1st we had the best atmosphere in football bar none and I include Rangers and Celtic in that ( which I can, because I went to many games in Glasgow). Unfortunately we were never quite good enough to win the League, Liverpool were a good side and hooliganism was everywhere. As a fan we were treated like Sh*** by clubs and Cops. Then there was the 2nd period, the Fergie period where success became the norm. In the early days the atmosphere was still good. Rotterdam in 91 was magnificent. But even by 99 things were not quite as good. We were so nervous and without Keane and Scholes we were not half the team. Still history shows we had the most exciting finish to a CL Final ever!! Now it's like the 3rd period. The apres Fergie period. Nothing to add really apart from #GlazersOutNow
Looking back I can't believe how bad Our (United's) keepers were back in the 80's. Bailey and Leighton were horrific. So Weak. No Wonder we kicked on once we got Schmeichel in 1991. Just like Liverpool getting Allison after years of poor keepers, just shows how important a good goalkeeper is in order to mount a Title challenge,
Definitely agree. A solid goalkeeper is essential to a good side. Schmeichel was probably the best goalkeeper in the modern football era; actually he was outstanding (Liverpool fan by the way), much better than our inconsistent David James. Like you say Allison is top quality after several average keepers (mingolet, karius, dudek were all mediocre, Reina wasn't bad though).

The more I see grobelaar I first can only imagine how nervous the defenders must have been, how encouraging it would have been for oppositions and being really surprised the Liverpool board didn't deal with it by buying Phil parkes or someone secure between the sticks. Grobelaar was all over the place.
Totally agree Peter - he was garbage but this season he cost Liverpool so many games. The arrogant prick had the audacity to humiliate the younger players if they made one mistake. Beglin and Mcmannaman spring to mind. Why did they allow Clemence to leave in 81 when he still had five years at the top?
Holy shit, I remember this day, never seen so much trouble, it was literally all day, united and Liverpool fans mixed together was never a good idea.. The replay at maine Road wasn't much better, thankfully we won 2-1..our current crop should take a look at this, pride, passion that is lacking, although the same can't be said about this brilliant Liverpool side..

Paul Edwards Your bravehearts ran and jumped over into the Bullens as they got twatted. Be honest. If you there you would remember this. I also remember a few of our lads jumped into the Park End from the Enclosure on a kamakazee mission.
@@redflag8970 : Correct - I bought a ticket outside the ground and was in the enclosure when it erupted soon after kick off. The cops waded in, beat us up and forced us into the Park End which was already overcrowded. Mind you, it was going off everywhere else around the ground for much of the game. I remember after the match being locked in under the Park Stand and feeling like we were all going to be crushed to death.
Danny SeventySeven - Was one of the most mental away games I ever went to. As a naive 19yr old, i took the special from Manchester to Liverpool. Bus to the ground was stoned , bottled. In the ground i saw a ball (maybe tennis), with nails pushed through on all sides, so resembling a medieval mace, hurled into our section from Liverpool fans. It was picked up and thrown back. shame on anyone who has the mentality to bring that to a game. After the game Utd fans were bottled by fans, wacked by police. I’m not trying to say it was all one set of fans instigating the violence but I was shocked by the level of hatred at that game.
@@ksportz66 I took the special as well mate. There was about 8 in total, we were on the first. Got put on a bus from Edge Hill and I can remember getting the v sign from woman in their 60s as we passed through. Great sight, those packed terraces. Good old days!
What a game ! Some unbelievable bits of play , whelans goal absolutely unreal
As a blue nose ,i went to this game with my red mates . Great atmosphere back then also it was a great game .
I loved this era. Semi finals at neural league grounds. Bobbled pitches, Terracing. Common sense existed back then.
Because it was a game for the comman man.
and the tickets were affordable even for the final
"neutral" at Goodison Park 😂
Was at the game, great match and atmosphere. Hell on after the game!
Liverpool fan here from Northern Ireland - first ever game I attended - what an atmosphere - Brucie had a mare & I was 16 - real game of football.......Belfast - Liverpool boat - those were the days
You had a big result getting this as a debut
You have to say and i haven't been there, but what a noise goodison park made 👍
I was at this game as a 16 year old. Great days supporting LFC.
Bryan Robson Superb as usual
10.54, Joe Fagan sparking up haha. And surely this must be the only time Liverpool have played in Liverpool whilst wearing their away kit.
I was at this game and at the replay at Maine Road which was even better; United beating Liverpool at City's ground!. Thousands of United in The Kippax End, great standing their, in the terraces normally reserved for City's hard core support was fabulous, a great night and great times then.
a match with no diving, players showing ghost red cards. The 1990 German team has a lot to answer for.
The Old Lady herself Goodison Park 💙
It was a beaut back then
Three things - was bruce the drop always on the take? Why was it no liverpool player ever give him a mouthful for his constant mistakes and why did successive liverpool managers stick with him?
Our last season - with Umbro; changed to Adidas (debuted in the EC Final that year).
Wish it had street cam for outside the ground!!
bascet1 It was very tasty outside
utd had a massive firm from lime st an made a good show against the odds scouse didnt at maine
trillywinkle dinkle no mate i was at both maybe your day was different to mine. i never said scouse didnt hsve a go i said utd held there own as for main no they didnt make the same show
red flag just your opinion i was at both aswel all i saw was carnage both sets of fans as bad as eachother how you can say any different is beyond me
trillywinkle dinkle i havent said different i said utd made a better show at goodison then they did at maine that is all .
Pumpkin head gives a team talk as Joe just lights a ciggy😂
@@oleggorky906 Things that wouldn't make the press back then, would be headline news today. This match being one.The Liverpool echo, was on it tho.Had pictures of golf balls, darts, batteries and as I seem to remember a potato with nails pushed through it ffs.All found inside the ground. So that may give you an idea of what happened outside.OB were a circus that day🤷🏼♂️They were clueless in the 80's.Different times then, even Liverpool had a mob.
I believe the CHAMPIONS League win your talking about Milan 3all draw penalty shoot out. Well maybe for you but that's nothing to do with This match. I find your comments appalling Regarding UCL VICTORY. The rest regarding what was posted ok
He was one of the best no sides just love of football but this was the best era of football the lucky guy
I was there in the Gladys street. Amazing.
@@garethfieldstead7547 it was that before in 79 besides Everton we’re at villa park
how could Bailey fall for that one by Whelan again, only two years before 83 Milk cup final, he scored an almost identical goal.
It's made how you can remember your first game live. Me and my Dad were in the old family stand. When we scored the noise scared me!! I was only 7 years old!! Bollocks to modern football.
Nothing to add really apart from #GlazersOutNow
cuando el futbol en inglaterra 1985 podia ir la clase trabajadora,, que pasion, que atmosfera,,,ahora parece algo frio,, un saludo desde colombia YNWA
Robson was a great player one of the best ever to play on these shores. Souness,Gazza,Hoddle,Keane,Scholes,Beckham ,Wilkins where do you stop.
I was 15 years old and went to this game scary and great at same time when football was tough and you could get a ticket for the big games
i bet the scum touts still got their fair share somehow
Sealy wasn’t bad. Crazy though!!
@@1980extremeG Totally agree mate! Hope we get to complete the season or just award you the title if not possible. You boys have been unbelievable this season.
@@mrkipling2201 He wasn't bad mate but he was a bit weak at shot stopping. Schmiechel was just next level on all of them!!!
James Chapman definitely. Although I was at old Trafford for one of his first games against Leeds in 91/92. He flapped at a cross allowing Lee Chapman to score. I thought what have we got here!!! Little did I know!!!
I can't decide if Grobbelaar was just absolutely pathetic in this match, or if he was expecting a Brucie Bonus? Also nice to see the Ref and his linesman didn't profit from their bungs ;-)
as a liverpool fan the games between liverpool and utd were always fast hard and passionate affairs an never much between the sides i remember this game because we got out of jail twice against utd but the luck ran out at maine road ,imagine if the two sides were drawn together in the f.a.cup semi again the fa would be dragging the two sides to wembley
Ronnie Whelan was an underated footballer paul Walsh never fulfilled his potential
true that I have seen anterviw on youtube in which washy says that king Kenny was unreasonable with him sad that
Went to this game and i've never seen so much trouble as i did that day at any other match. Those were the days my friend.....
How much was a ticket?
Grant Page a fiver lad, those were the days my friend!
@@paulmurphy5547 A league match was roughly £2.50 so it was the usual doubling of price. But...those were the days my friend
and we had joy we had fun.....
kev woodward probably my favourite game of all time, and that’s a lot of games considering I started watching Liverpool in 1972 and a fiver was well worth it lad, great memories
Look in the dictionary for unsavable and you’ll get that Whelan curler as the definition. No keeper saves that.
And them balls took some legs of fkn iron to kick them not like these lightweight balls that move everywhere
Played at an incredible pace.
ABSOLUTE murder that day around Goodison
Robbo.. My idol :)
And mine! Chuffed he finally got that title medal in his twilight.
If any player deserved one it was Robbo.
the replay at maine rd was the one game i wished i had the chance to go to as it happened i couldnt go , i heard it was mental after it
Loved to have seen someone pull a camera out at this game.....in either end.Oh how times have changed!
Great players, great game for both teams.👍👍👍
Terrific game between 2 great clubs.
Ronnie Whelan was brilliant and please believe for he wasn't a afraid of anyone or reputations.
Los que no somos de habla inglesa lo pasamos mal. Es como en el cine mudo pues le quito la voz. Total,no me entero de nada.Sería de agradecer la traducción simultánea o de cualquier manera.
I dislike the redshite with a passion, but what a goal by Ronnie Whelan. An absolute peach. One of the best FA Cup semi final goals I've seen.
Whelan..Whelan again!! It was a peach an me an me mates was always trying to score a 'Whelan again' goal in the plsyground after that.
Whelan scored a similar goal against united in the 1983 milk cup final in extra time. 👍
Right back at ya pal. I'm a Liverpool fan. But i detest fans of all clubs who mock each other about other clubs disasters.. Like the shankly 81 banner at 6.12 and the Munich 58 banner that some liverpool fans had at heysel only 6 weeks later.
Great game....the fighting outside was everywhere....same at maine road....you had to be there....
The good old days mid 70s to mid 80s,
The more I see grobelaar I first can only imagine how nervous the defenders must have been, how encouraging it would have been for oppositions and being really surprised the Liverpool board didn't deal with it by buying Phil parkes or someone secure between the sticks.
Grobbelaar was a liability at times, a genius at others.
He was a prick fixing games for money
The best Liverpool away kit of all time.
I liked the white one with black shorts.
John Clark I remember that one, again, simple and effective.
The battleship grey was my favorite.
Holy shit, I remember this day, never seen so much trouble, it was literally all day, united and Liverpool fans mixed together was never a good idea.. The replay at maine Road wasn't much better, thankfully we won 2-1..our current crop should take a look at this, pride, passion that is lacking, although the same can't be said about this brilliant Liverpool side..
as i remember we had the normal away end and bullens road. we also had more than a few in the main stand and a few bravehearts in the gladys street . very naughty day but most enjoyable
Paul Edwards
Your bravehearts ran and jumped over into the Bullens as they got twatted. Be honest. If you there you would remember this. I also remember a few of our lads jumped into the Park End from the Enclosure on a kamakazee mission.
+Pablo Jablo utd more than held there own in Merseyside you lot were a joke in manc like you've always been
the boys that jumpef from the enclosure into park end were utd who had tickets in there they got steamed n climbed over not kamakazi scouse.
@@kieranmartin9836 Ant then kieran turned into suzanne, manc weirdo.
Proper stadium this.what an atmosphere.
Before the working man's game was destroyed by the businessman

When the fa cup mattered
I was there with a broken hand with the Rochdale boys
Forgot how bad Grobelaar was my goodness
The most violent day ever in the history of Mancs vs Scousers outside the ground.
Battle of Everton valley was.
@@paulnelson7698 I was at both games Everton Valley was a vicars tea party compared to this.
Got in the ground very early and initially stood on the iron railings at the back of the Park End to get a better view. As we were close to the segregation I just didn't feel safe so jumped down. What a decision that was all sorts of stuff was being thrown across with those stood on the railings in the firing line. My first game in Merseyside and a real experience.
The replay was one of my favourite ever games. Incredible atmosphere and a wonder goal from Robbo.
Salford66 - Robbos goal was epic in replay.. so far out..
I was at the final. Stood among MU supporters. I supported MU that day (I'm a Super Leeds United supporter and that was pre-Fergie ... so ... please forgive me)
You for real? Leeds fan supporting man utd..get the f out of here liar
LOL
I didn't realize that back in the 80's, goalkeepers hadn't yet learned how to catch the ball...
Brucey had a nightmare in those opening minutes LOL.
Wonder exactly when they all started wearing those huge gloves?
